Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

A week for Economics at Durham would be unheard of I'd have thought....

Waitingforsherlock · 16/12/2016 09:33

Yes, I am sure you are right. I know they have thousands of applications to process. I'm just really twitchy on his behalf. I cannot remember it being this stressful when I applied back in the dark ages I guess it is because lots of his friends have offers and acceptances, if they are on gap years and theirs came quite quickly. Must be very much down to the course.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 16/12/2016 10:03

Congrats on being sorted with an unconditional ugg - that must feel good!
Lincoln looks like a beautiful city with some lovely looking student accommodation too by the river/waterside.
I was hoping DD would include in her 5, especially as it would be nearer us than some she's gone for, but she was an adamant teenage purist when it came to looking at the courses first regardless of location - and for her subject other places were higher on her list on that criteria. Obviously just her opinion though and I don't think she had a whole lot to go on but she wanted to make her own judgement.
Seems I must have had some influence by stealth though as DD pointed out that several on her shortlist were ones I suggested Smile
Hopefully between us we've got some kind of balance between the course and the Uni/place.

TwitterQueen1 · 16/12/2016 10:43

Yay! Exeter came through yesterday evening Grin. DC thrilled and delighted. AAA for Ancient History.

aginghippy · 16/12/2016 11:08

Seems I must have had some influence by stealth

Same here Juggling Smile After dd submitted her application, it occurred to me that the ones I had encouraged her to visit all ended up on her list.

EnormousTiger · 16/12/2016 11:20

(Twitter, same as mine : AAA same subject Ex (and he also has AAB Bristol which I think he prefers anyway but waiting for Durham))

JugglingFromHereToThere · 16/12/2016 11:26

Funny that isn't it aginghippy?!

I think perhaps they are more open to suggestion than they like to appear as after all it's a pretty massive task to choose a course and Uni from all the possibilities, with really relatively little data/ knowledge to make that choice.

I guess the Uni's know this too as they certainly seem to have quite a persuasive style on the open days etc.

All in all though I'm thinking there are probably lots of good options for DD where hopefully she can have a very enjoyable and positive experience.

aginghippy · 16/12/2016 11:38

Yes, very true, it is a massive task to choose. DD was a bit overwhelmed at first.

Now that she has had some offers, she is feeling more confident about the whole thing. 4 universities want her! I think dd could be happy and do well at any of her choices.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 16/12/2016 11:55

Yes, really nice to have some offers coming in, along with some friendly invitations to applicant days.
here we go again though

We've heard from 3 so far ...

iwanttobemissmarple · 16/12/2016 12:33

2 unconditional offers here - one from Birmingham which is dc first choice so thrilled to bits!

I remember friends unconditional offers a while back 32 years ago & was always amazed Oxbridge offered them. Still not certain about them though!

TheMortificadosDragon · 16/12/2016 12:55

The was that back when Oxbridge did their own entrance exams though?

MeTehOne · 16/12/2016 14:39

I know Oxford doesn't do unconditional offers but considering how sort after their courses are some of their A'level requirements are very reasonable . Many courses are 'only' AAA. The difficult bit is passing the interview and entrance tests and getting the offer. I don't know what their offer vs take up rate is but I would have thought its higher than average. (please correct me if I'm wrong Grin )

DH had an EE offer many moons ago but turned it down because he thought it too 'posh'. Silly boy 😂

dahliaaa · 16/12/2016 18:11

Are many people still waiting for Warwick?
(politics abc economics)
DS has had offers from his other 4 for a while but typically Warwick is his first choice.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 16/12/2016 20:15

Encouraging developments here from both Swansea and Reading giving some excitement for the weekend ... a very nice personal email from Reading encouragingly and impressively picking up on elements from DD's personal statement, and a letter with brochure to browse through from Swansea.
Both looking good!

BingBongBam · 16/12/2016 21:28

We got a letter from sixth form explaining that predicted grades may have dropped due to the new way they are worked out, it's a national thing apparently. Just thought I'd mention it in case sixth forms are changing predictions.

indiraisindiaisindira · 16/12/2016 22:23

Juggling.

Congratulations to your daughter, I hope that it is making her happy before ChristmasXmas Smile

I'm interested in what she heard from Reading? I wonder if this is common practise? My daughters friend was thrilled to get a similar email for a science course. The school thought it may be a one off so your daughter having recieved a highly complimentary email also is interesting.

Perhaps they do this to try and sweet talk the very best of their applicants in the hope they firm them?Grin

TheMortificadosDragon · 16/12/2016 22:56

My DD got a postcard from her Manchester interviewer. A uni card with some pleasant comments about the interview, not from his hols or anything weird.Grin

JugglingFromHereToThere · 17/12/2016 10:06

Thanks indira, dd was indeed very pleased to get such an email.

I guess in a way it was a "holding" email, especially over the Christmas break, as Reading have told us they may take several weeks to respond with offers (as they want to give careful consideration etc) - so a Uni wide thing I guess. This was from the admissions tutor of the department saying she will be recommending dd for an offer (but we may not receive it til after Christmas)

Am hoping it might be as generous and potentially achievable for dd as the one from Swansea (3 B's in line with her predictions in case your following this Reading!) Smile

MeTehOne · 17/12/2016 10:40

My DD received phone calls from some of the Unis she had applied to from from students who were in higher years on the course she was applying too. I thought that was a nice gesture.

TwitterQueen1 · 17/12/2016 11:17

Dahliaa Warwick came back with an offer within 4 days of DC applying for Ancient History, but I don't think that's any indication for other subjects. It seems to vary very widely across departments / subjects. Good luck!

Sadusername · 17/12/2016 12:05

From her four choices dd only has one offer, from Glasgow. A few days ago she was excited to get an envelope from Glasgow university. It contained a very bizarre piece of marketing. Basically it was an A4 piece of paper, with various lower faces printed on it, from which you could make a mask you could hang onto your nose. They then invited you to take a selfie and upload it. The logo was Be a World Changer. Perhaps she is a bit humourless but it has really put her off, which is a shame as it was a realistic offer. She just can't see the link between selfie masks and changing the world. I think she would have responded a lot more positively to a personalised email , which showed some indications that they had read her personal statement.

dahliaaa · 17/12/2016 12:43

Thank you TwitterQueen - keeping fingers crossed !

HamletsSister · 17/12/2016 14:19

DS got the weird Glasgow thing too. Stupid waste of money and paper. DS was put off by it too. But a Glasgow offer early and don't read Personal Statements. DS got an unconditional from Aberdeen the other day but they are wooing him by e-mail.

He is waiting for StA, Edinburgh and Oxford but will reject Glasgow and Aberdeen as soon as he gets an unconditional from StA or Ed. Oxford is likely to be conditional (if at all) but he has more than they need for all the others.

Not sure if you are in Scotland but some universities here only offer to Scottish students after the deadline because the number of places are capped.

Carriemac · 17/12/2016 15:29

Durham law offer last night! DD really pleased as is her favourite

LineyReborn · 17/12/2016 15:31

My DS heard from Warwick very quickly (ABB) for Biological Sciences. I mentioned it upthread as I was pleasantly surprised.

Cardiff offered AAB.

He didn't like Manchester Shock who want to interview him. He went to the open day and just found the city too big, I think.
