Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

DD's m eng offer from Southampton is AAA and also specifies that the A has to be in maths or physics. She thinks she's in with a chance for maths.

BehindTheBlueDoor · 08/12/2016 10:50

Been lurking. DS applied for Physics and Astrophysics and getting a bit worried not chosen 'best' unis for that subject. Unsuccessful Oxbridge but has had offers from Warwick and Lancaster, Exeter pending and nothing yet from St Andrews. All expect v high grades so they should be good courses right? He wouldn't entertain Imperial or Manchester b/c of big cities. Wanted him to look at Birmingham but not keen.

He's v bright boy but v low self confidence and don't want him somewhere that he won't achieve full
potential.
Finding this all so stressful and aware I may be coming over a hyper-anxious individual. You all seem so self assured and knowledgable. How do you do it?

TheMortificadosDragon · 08/12/2016 12:11

Those are all good unis, and choosing a place where he's likely to be happy is entirely sensible. DD wouldn't consider any of the London unis either, and probably wont put Manchester in her final two because although its an excellent dept which she did like, she's not a big city girl.

Your DS might have liked b'ham if he'd looked at it - its a nice campus well out of the centre, but they can only choose 5 and theres nothing wrong with any of his choices.

TheMortificadosDragon · 08/12/2016 12:26

Ok, just found our copy of The Times good uni guide 2016 (my DH loves statistics). Physics and Astronomy listing:
1 cambridge
2 st andrews
3 Oxford
4 warwick
5 imperial
6 b'ham
7 manc
8 Exeter
Then surrey, durham, southampton and
12 lancaster

Ahead of bath and bristol. I didn't have to go very far, down the list, did I?
They're a flipping excellent set of choices!Grin

JugglingFromHereToThere · 08/12/2016 12:34

DD has just got her application off at long last so thought I'd come and join you as we await some responses. Applying for zoology. 5 great Uni's and courses I think (enjoyed visiting most with of them with her over the last year) - I think she could have an amazing time at any of them. Excited for her!
But hoping we get some nice responses now - some early ones before Christmas would be lovely Smile

FrogPrincess · 08/12/2016 12:49

a very excited DD texted to say she has just received an offer from Lancaster for English Lit and Creative Writing (it's her favourite along with UEA)!

Already has an interview at Falmouth and an unconditional offer with potential scholarship from Kent, and waiting to hear from UEA and Bath.

so glad she got this before the Christmas break (she would have driven me mad worrying about it....)

BehindTheBlueDoor · 08/12/2016 14:44

I'm starting to lose sense of perspective I think Dragon. It was hard to narrow choices down to 5 and I have looked at so many lists I can't see the wood for the trees some days. Your input was welcome and affirming, thanks. (Can't think where DS gets his lack of self- confidence from!!)Wink

TheMortificadosDragon · 08/12/2016 15:00

Glad to help. Some of the lists are a bit iffy tbh - the Guardian one in particular sometimes seems a bit odd. And while some of the metrics such as research rating or average points are fairly robust, some of the others eg student satisfaction are often based on a very small sample survey. Which means that the exact relative position in any particular list isn't necessarily deeply meaningful.

ono40 · 08/12/2016 16:34

Bluedoor, some of our DCs choose their unis for the most random reasons. My DS chose Birmingham as his number 1 as he has suffered from a recurring sore throat/fever illness almost every month for the last year and he felt he could get home fast if he needed to Confused. We live near London so that ruled out all the London unis; he didn't like the vibe of Manchester as it is a sprawling campus and a very big city; he didn't warm to Warwick as it felt too insular and he's not an Oxbridge boy. So he is happy with his choice, even happier to have an unconditional offer so if he's ill in exam week there is less pressure Xmas Smile (felt the irrepressible urge to use a Santa icon gratuitously).

JugglingFromHereToThere · 08/12/2016 17:46

Fantastic ono, so chuffed for you and your boy about Birmingham Smile

hellsbells99 · 08/12/2016 18:22

Well done to all those with offers so far.
To those who have DDs doing engineering, please advise your DDs to think carefully when choosing accommodation. My DD is in her 1st year of an engineering degree and thoroughly enjoying it - although she has found some of it quite tough and the workload is heavy. There are not many females on her course at all and although she has made a lot of male friends, she does like female company. Luckily she is in a large flat with 5 other girls (& 5 boys) and the flat is very sociable so consequently she has made friends with her flat mates' friends as well.

BehindTheBlueDoor · 08/12/2016 18:26

Great news about his offer for Birmingham ono and I hope he stays well. Thanks for your thoughts and reassurance. Much appreciated..

dingit · 08/12/2016 18:32

Hells bells, is she in catered or non catered? I'm trying to talk Dd into catered as I'm worried if the work load is heavy she won't eat properly.

hellsbells99 · 08/12/2016 19:29

Sort of catered Dingit! It is not traditional catered but a meal card. So she goes to the refectory for tea every night which also helps with the social side.

Waitingforsherlock · 08/12/2016 22:18

Thanks TheMortificadosDragon as another poster said everyone seems to know what they are doing and is very confident about the process. I get all my info from Mumsnet Xmas Grin and so keep spouting random facts about various uni's at ds. Four emails to confirm offers have been received today so at least he knows that they have got there.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 09/12/2016 07:53

We've had a couple of those too Waiting - they were encouragingly written, but probably completely standard - still nice to get though Smile

EnormousTiger · 09/12/2016 08:57

I think it will be next year now when my two hear from Edinburgh and Durham (and one of them from Exeter) but there is no rush. They both had very nice school reports yesterday which was good (and certainly not been typical for me with 5 children over the last 30+ years.... so may be we will end on a high).

CQ · 09/12/2016 19:20

DS got an offer from Durham today. A*AA for engineering. So only waiting to hear from Newcastle now, and Cambridge post-interview.

He is very chilled now that all the interviews and tests are done. Just the small matter of an 18th birthday party a week on Saturday to survive Grin

iwanttobemissmarple · 09/12/2016 19:25

2 offers here but waiting with baited breath
mine for the others as really want Birmingham

iwanttobemissmarple · 09/12/2016 19:25

Also does anyone know whether get offers over a weekend?

LineyReborn · 09/12/2016 19:34

It's interesting about Manchester on here. DS has also decided against it, on the grounds that he couldn't cope with that size and sprawl of city - yet we're from a (smaller) city so he's not unused to an urban environment.

He really liked Cardiff, for example. A friend of his is really keen on Birmingham.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 09/12/2016 21:06

Ooh, we got two offers today! Application only went off on Wednesday so we're amazed and impressed by their turn around.
So she might go to Swansea to do Zoology, or Uni of South Wales (Cardiff area) to do International Wildlife Biology. Two very nice offers.
Or she might go to one of the other 3 of course Smile
All so exciting! So nice to have some real possibilities.

TheMortificadosDragon · 09/12/2016 21:26

Wow, that was fast juggling, thats great!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 09/12/2016 22:00

Thanks Dragon

Yes, even though I was looking forward to some responses for her I was amazed we got two before the weekend!

LineyReborn · 09/12/2016 22:04

Hi, Juggling. That's brilliant.
