Uni Freshers parents 2016?

hi

I've just been reading recent threads on weekly living costs and what to take to uni and found loads of useful info. I'm certainly finding that there was so much focus on getting the results/not tempting fate that it all feels a bit of a panic now. I have a dd going to warwick and a ds going to bath.

Wondered if there is already a thread for other general tips for those with dd/s starting uni this September?

Seems to be birthday season!
And 8 nights out in a row? Her hangover will be showing. Grin

OK, I've bought more tat useful stuff for DS1's emergency kit on top of the condoms, chocolate, clean pants, picture frame with emergency tenner, paracetamol, super noodles and instant porridge.

Adjustable screwdriver
Tin of beans with sausages and spaghetti
Instant coffee, milk and sugar sachets
Tissues
Andrex wipes
Plasters
Small torch
Alka seltzer
Spare pens
Vampire make up kit with teeth (possibly the most useful item!)
Tiny can of WD40
Maoam mix
Jack Daniels miniature
Spare phone charger cable
Duct tape
Sewing kit
And bungees!

Should do it! I'm putting it all in a wrapped shoebox. 🎁

I think we do expect a lot of them OhFuds ....when I think I see my mum every week! I haven't seen her this week as I have been ill and don't want to pass anything on and it does feel odd not to catch up with her.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 24/09/2016 15:40

Sorry, OhFuds, crossed post.

Hopefully with good company at least she'll settle down. Any chance of switching course?

hellsbells99 · 24/09/2016 15:41

You forgot the Lucozade EllenJane - cure for all hangovers Wink

OhFuds · 24/09/2016 15:48

Funnily enough when she was choosing extra classes she chose a sports science class (her main course is Hispanic Studies) I said to her dad I can see her enjoying the sports one more, which she is. My dd is just finding the lectures really dull just now as she's sitting in lectures listening to what she had already learned in school. Hopefully in a few weeks she'll feel better, it's her 18th in October so I think I'll take a drive up to her uni and go shopping or whatever.

OhFuds · 24/09/2016 15:52

You should wrap a pair of old grandad slippers too for when the firealarms are set off in the middle of the night!

EllenJanethickerknickers · 24/09/2016 16:28

I think part of the first term is getting everyone up to the same standard, OhFuds, so there may well be some repetition from her A level course. Is she a year younger than most, or Scottish? DS1 is turning 19 in October.

OK, slippers might not fit in the box! Small bottle of Lucozade might...

OhFuds · 24/09/2016 16:42

Scottish, luckily a few others in her corridor were still only 17 for freshers week so they got to bond in the kitchen while the older ones went out to party Wine

Northernlurker · 24/09/2016 17:28

Dd is a bit weepy today. Knackered, catching up with work after quite a lot of hospital visiting and lost sleep and still getting over her cold.

Coco, he may well have had the odd moments of homesickness and general wobbliness but I would think that if it was more than that it would have come across in his messages. Have faith it's going well!

Phaedra11 · 24/09/2016 18:32

Ah just after posting my message I've reread the messages above and understand the context!

It is difficult to completely determine their mood as the first week has probably been a roller coaster of emotions for many of them. Knowing they are satisfied with course and have made friends is probably good enough to start with. I'm sure those who are really unhappy will make it clear one or another way before Christmas!

Peaceandl0ve · 24/09/2016 19:23

Shameless boast coming up, dont read if you dont want to!
My DD just sent us a piccie of her supper, chicken fajita with flatbead, all made from scratch, bread, spicing the lot! My DD rocks, and i blooming love her. Wish I wasnt missing her so much though!

Well, my dd is pleased as Punch because she and her flatmates all managed to nail themselves a free Dominos meal each, delivered to their Halls, courtesy of Fresher's Fair.

justaweeone · 24/09/2016 20:03

Peace
Boast away, have you taught her well or just talented Grin
I will miss the pizza dough she makes ( better than mine) !

OhFuds · 24/09/2016 20:12

Boast away! I wish my dd would broaden her tastes rather than have a rotation of 3 or 4 meals. I've fed her up well this weekend and I've did a wee shop at Sainsburys since she was moaning the only place for food beside her halls is Lidl.

Peaceandl0ve · 24/09/2016 20:29

She has to be carefull with her food because of ibs so she cooks from scratch. Her skills from her dad, he does the cooking in our house. And she doesnt have much money to buy junk food, which is good because that will cause an ibs flareup. Funny that she tolerates the ibs caused by far too much vodka and staying out all night!

hellsbells99 · 24/09/2016 20:35

Northern - I hope your DD and her friend are okay.
Peace - I know what you mean about missing them so much ....two going at once means an empty house here.

homebythesea · 24/09/2016 21:20

Well we survived! Tears all round at various points but I left him with a sorted room (on a side note, only 3 plug points in a room on the wall furthest from the bed ) and a text this evening to say he's met some nice people in his corridor and dinner was surprisingly good (he's catered). The worst point of the day for me was actually before we even left home when I saw his childhood "cuddly" poking out of the top of his rucksack. Did me in!!!!

NapoleonsNose · 24/09/2016 21:44

Good luck to all DC who go this weekend. Can't believe DD has been gone a over a week now. She seems to be taking it all in her stride. She's no cook but she text me earlier for some recipes that we have at home so maybe she's going to try and experiment a little. Four out of the six in the flat have buddied up to shop and cook together. The other two are happy doing their own thing apparently.

Her birthday is at the beginning of November which coincides with reading week so she's planning on coming home for a few days. Apparently her shower in her room is crap, so she wants to enjoy the facilities at home for a bit!

Squirrills · 24/09/2016 22:26

Well he's gone. A very nervous DS but I've had a text to say flat mates are nice. His room was tiny but well fitted out with shelves and sockets.
Another empty house here for the first time in 20 years as DS1 has also gone back to uni.Sad

hairymairyfromthedairy · 24/09/2016 23:02

Our turn tomorrow - sitting in the lounge looking at the mountain of stuff we need to get in the car in the morning! Was hoping to see ds before I went to bed as I think he might be upset after saying goodbye to his girlfriend but no sign of him yet! Had a nice day today but a few tearful moments - keeps catching me unawares!

hellsbells99 · 25/09/2016 08:00

Good luck today Hairymairy.
