A level Results - 18 days - anxiety rising....anyone else??

Maybe because it is August tomorrow - but seems to have come round quickly. Had a nice break not thinking about anything since last exam and after full on year choosing, applying, getting rejected, getting offers etc....

Might as well switch off and try and get distracted for the next 18 days....as either way it will be v busy few days/weeks after results to get started on next phase of his life.

PFB -- any old hands out there want to give me a slap?

2 years ago, ds was accepted on his masters civ engineering course at a good uni having dropped a couple of grades across the board. Wasn't even demoted to Bachelors. It all entirely depends on how everyone else has done really. Dh is an admissions tutor and the dean at his uni will not compromise on grades (much), even though each student brings in an income of at least 27k. They also get fined if they get their numbers wrong. It's a tricky one to manage.

I wrote this on another thread and I think it could be helpful here about what if results aren't what are expected :

My A level results weren't great, let hey were awful I got a DE, due to a lot of factors, including teachers, many family bereavements, and personal issues, I still managed to go to my university of choice and get an excellent grade on my undergraduate degree in the same timeframe. OK if your children are going to and applying to places like Oxford and Cambridge etc there may not be too much for a plan B but they should still get good places in clearing etc, if not and they do badly, it's worth noting even if you get a setback as big as mine there are still options if they want to go to university. For me it was a foundation degree for 2 years and then a final year of undergrad at a mid level university. There are always options , and it didn't hinder job prospects either with many of my classmates in relatively high paying, senior roles in big organisations for their age

BestIsWest · 17/08/2016 19:34

Good luck to everyone's DCs.

In an odd position here as DS did a BTEC and got his results in July. He didn't quite make his offer so his first choice rejected him but his insurance seems to be hanging on to him until A level results day.

His current thinking is that whether they accept him or not he will try again for his first choice next year and will go back to sixth form college.

My lovely neice is also waiting for A level results tomorrow so I'm crossing everything for her.

Just asked dh and he said the schools have known results since the weekend. Ds reminded me (as I really couldn't remember - funny how you forget, even when it absorbed me totally at the time) that he received an email from the uni at around 8am, welcoming him to the course. Otherwise it would have been a nightmare opening the envelope to lower grades than he thought were required.

justkeepongoing · 17/08/2016 19:43

School will know today. I knew my DS GCSE results the day before he got them. I had to generate all the results that are given out in envelopes. That was one big secret that I had to keep or I'd have been out of a job!
Awaiting AS results but they're all reformed subjects so not as much pressure.

Coconuty are you on the UCAS sight?

Cocolepew · 17/08/2016 20:03

Blimey Ready thats a plan c and a half!
I fell asleep on the sofa for three hours so that will help me sleep tonight Hmm.
DD has arrived home and is in the shower then is going to look for any phone numbers she needs for tomorrow.

kath6144 · 17/08/2016 20:04

Coconutty DS went onto Uni website of his firm offer, having found his course on UCAS clearing list. Uni website gives clearing grades - BBC, as opposed to ABB offer - so we hoping he will get in even if not quite met the offer.

I am feeling a little less nervous, but still wishing next 12 hours away.

And I am another with DC 2 years apart, so GCSEs next week too, nervous breakdown by next weekend I think.

buckingfrolicks · 17/08/2016 20:08

Anyone able to shed light on this? My DS just got a good luck email from his reserve. Does this tend towards him having not met his first choice uni, then? Would his reserve know his results? We are plunged in gloom here.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 17/08/2016 20:16

electricfly that's OK, I realised I'd crossed with you a little late. Smile DS1 is doing maths and FM OCR MEI and is a bit more communicative than your DS, amazingly!

EllenJanethickerknickers · 17/08/2016 20:18

Bucking, it's probably a standard email they send out to everyone.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 17/08/2016 20:19

That is, all firm and insurance students.

buckingfrolicks · 17/08/2016 20:20

Ellen thank you! I need reassurance in order to be a plausible reassuring DM.

Oh god the waiting!! It's like Christmas Eve only there's the chance of no presents

NapoleonsNose · 17/08/2016 20:30

DD's firm choice uni sent out unconditional emails to some prospective students on Monday. I did write about it on this thread at the time. Apparently it was an admin error and they should never have been sent. They have fessed up to UCAS because grade info is strictly embargoed for students until tomorrow. Luckily though the students who did receive the email are still unconditional, it's just they were emailed three days early. Bet someone's head will roll for that cock up!

Hassled · 17/08/2016 20:43

It's like Christmas Eve if Christmas Eve is a hellhole of regret, angst and cheap white wine - so yes, that's a pretty good analogy :o.

hobobulate · 17/08/2016 20:46

actually hassled yes that sounds fairly similar!!

hobobulate · 17/08/2016 20:47

coconutty which unis? I am soooo stressed now!!

thepurplehen · 17/08/2016 20:53

Coconutty - if you click on the subject choice when you're in the clearing section on UCAS, it gives you entrance requirements. Sometimes you have to select the exam type (A level / BTEC etc)

TaIkinPeace · 17/08/2016 20:53

I'm lucky - all of DDs UCAS stuff was done from an email account that mirrors into this computer : she has heard nothing and is contentedly watching the Olympics.

jaxxyj · 17/08/2016 20:57

Hi all good luck to everyone! A work colleague told me today that her son heard at 12.30 am from his firm with a congratulations email, it was Lancaster University - anyone heard of any other uni's doing this? I too am on tender hooks, both of my DC s have gone out to distract themselves. Luckily DS wants me to come to sixth form with her in the morning but DS does not as they are in different colleges. Could be doing two lots of clearing though! Whoopee!
