Dear all,

I have really enjoyed these threads. So if anyone else wants to keep up posts on DC travelling through trials and tribulations of uni life - do post here.
Smile

Have your DC been revising at all for instance? Do you now stand back?

Sauvignon - can you get your DS to phone up the uni accommodation office? Some unis reserve some rooms for 2nd years.

Horsemad · 19/06/2016 21:55

My DS is home! GrinGrinGrin

I killed the proverbial fatted takeaway, so we are now nicely fed and watered Wink
He looks good and seems really happy, the cat is pleased to see him!

muffinmonster · 20/06/2016 19:33

DD is hanging on in her uni town till Sunday 26th to fit in some more work shifts. I don't know what work plans she has for the summer. We have been paying her maintenance loan into her account in monthly instalments but that's finished now so she will need money to live and to take a planned holiday in early September.

She has been texting me lists of exotic ingredients for the recipes she wants to try when she gets home.

Horsemad · 20/06/2016 19:48

Well, it's like a tornado went through DS's room Shock

I cannot believe the washing - 2 x laundry bins full and a massive holdall. He packed clean with dirty, so it all needs washing. Unbelievable. The sum total of his kitchen stuff brought home = 1 dinner plate, 2 side plates, 5 mugs, 8 shot glasses (never used, still in original packaging) and a spaghetti measure!!! Nothing else and he had quite a lot when he went. Cutlery, glasses, chopping boards, pans, frying pan, knife block, basins, wooden spoons, spatulas... All 'disappeared', or thrown because they were mouldy.

PUGaLUGS · 20/06/2016 21:58

Art at tornado Horsemad. Is DS expecting you to replace the missing items? I am lucky that DS has the foresight to put his dirty washing into the mesh bit of his suitcase and there was only about three days worth plus his bed linen, towel and bath mat.

muffin are you having to be Guinea Pig to these meals? Grin

Took DS to the train station at tea time as he was going up to meet his uni friends to watch the football and stay over. Between getting out of the car and walking through the train station door he dropped his wallet. Went to get it out of his pocket and realised it wasn't there. I was still waiting to pull off as was stuck with people on the zebra crossing. In those few split seconds of him dropping it and walking over to me to see if it was on the passenger seat it had gone. I hadn't taken my purse with me so couldn't give him any money. Luckily there wasn't any cash in it just his bank card (now cancelled), driving licence and uni card. He was so peed off with himself. We hung about and went back twice (and phoned) the information office in case it had been handed it but nothing...

Quietlygoingmad67 · 20/06/2016 23:17

horsemad my husband collected our DD and said he was shocked at what was being left behind and thrown away (he helped himself to a sieve from the rubbish pile - Blush)

Well DD is home with her mountain of stuff!! I swear it's doubled since we took her there 9 months ago! Hmm

Also sat down and went through her student bank account (she has her own account for wages and savings to use for makeup - clothes and niceties!) because we need to see what's left and also build it up just in case she decides to go back next year! Anyway have discovered she has brought nearly £150 worth of makeup with her day to day living money over the last 3 months!!! Obviously we are giving her too much money!!

Horsemad · 20/06/2016 23:38

I can well believe it Quietly - DS's sieve nowhere to be seen either!

Pugs - maybe some kind person has handed your DS's wallet in to the police; fingers crossed for him.

Quietlygoingmad67 · 21/06/2016 00:03

pugs sorry just seen your post about your Ds wallet! How awful that it disappeared so quickly! It's a horrible feeling when you lose your purse/wallet - thankfully no cash but it's a pain to replace bank cards etc Sad

GypsyFl0ss · 21/06/2016 07:54

Oh Pugs what a pain.

At DD's uni they have drop off points for all unwanted stuff so that it can be redistributed to returners and charities. I noticed some signs up in Leeds about something similar.

Quietly DD has a similar expensive make up habit. She certainly hasn't spent the year living a frugal student lifestyle Grin

seimum · 21/06/2016 08:36

Collected DS on Saturday. He seemed to be the last person left in his flat. I haven't checked what he brought back, but there were two boxes of kitchen stuff so he must have kept most of what he went up with.
He has no plans for the summer, is meant to be looking for a job.

Sauvignon - my DD1 was in a similar situation at the end of her first year - supposed house share having collapsed in June, and DD not knowing what to do. I went on the Spareroom website and we found a number of places advertising single rooms for rent, she managed to arrange viewings for a couple and chose one pretty quickly.

HocusLotus · 21/06/2016 19:40

Ds has end of term exams all this week - first one yesterday, Thus far - "how did it go?" says I , "Absolutely no idea" says he. He has sent back some stuff he doesn't need and back on Saturday. So that is two car trips to get him back end of the year compared to the 1 plus room for me which got him there. I would not look, other than there isn't much room in this house to store stuff. Best wishes to all. I cannot stop myself saying how quickly it seems to have gone since I was talking to many on this thread about them just going Smile . (Other cliches are available) . Best wishes to all ....

Horsemad · 22/06/2016 18:47

I've hardly seen DS since he arrived home - he is constantly "out". Doing what I have no idea, but at least he's doing something! Grin

PUGaLUGS · 22/06/2016 19:27

An old colleague who is a friend on Fb contacted me via fb yesterday afternoon and asked me "is this your son?", she had seen a fb pic of him on her friends wall asking if anyone knew him. Her friend had found DS's wallet on Monday night 10 minutes after he had dropped it. Someone must have seen him drop it, swiped it off the ground and took it to the back of the train car park to have a look inside. On finding no money in it they put it on a wall. This lady and her friend were using the car park as a cut through. At least he doesn't have to pay for a new uni card and driving licence now. Just waiting for his new bank card to arrive. So huzzah for one honest person!

Quietly it doesn't take much though to rack up £150 on makeup if she is buying high end stuff Grin.

At least he is going out Horse. DS has been up to see his uni friends once, tried to go a second time and failed because of his wallet and out once to see an old college friend and that's it!

GypsyFl0ss · 22/06/2016 19:39

Great news Pug!

Horsemad · 22/06/2016 20:12

That's a stroke of luck Pug!

Quietlygoingmad67 · 22/06/2016 20:34

horsemad my DD hasn't left the house since coming back!! She has a couple of work shifts this weekend so mums taxi is back in service Hmm

pugs that's great to hear

gypsy oh yes a very expensive makeup habit - she already owns over £1k worth!!!!

GypsyFl0ss · 23/06/2016 06:24

Heh Quietly that sounds so familiar!

Horsemad · 23/06/2016 19:43

Anyone had any results yet? My DS has failed 5 out of 8 modules. I'm not sure what happens now, he reckons he has to wait for further instructions from the Uni.

What a bloody waste of time this has all been. Sad

NiceCardigan · 23/06/2016 19:51

oh dear Horsemad can he not look on his uni intranet to see what the resit rules are for his course. 5 out of 8 could mean resitting the year rather than going back in August to redo them.

esornep · 23/06/2016 19:52

I'm not sure what happens now, he reckons he has to wait for further instructions from the Uni.

Your DS's university will have sent out letters today detailing what happens next. He will be offered the chance to repeat the first year; he cannot retake so many failed modules in the summer period.

(In 20+ years as an academic I have never seen students who attended lectures/did assignments/worked reasonably fail the year. I would always advise students who end up repeating years to be honest with themselves about what went wrong (if not their parents!) and change their study habits in their repeat year.)

Quietlygoingmad67 · 23/06/2016 20:05

horsemad Flowers and Wine. Results here aren't until mid July. Has your son said what he wants to do?

Horsemad · 23/06/2016 20:12

Thanks esornep, I know he hasn't done the work but he isn't admitting it. I've asked him if he thinks the work is beyond him and he said not, so if it's not too hard then it must be him not making the effort. Too much gaming I imagine. Angry

I am so disappointed, I really thought he'd put the work in. His A levels were one long slog because he wouldn't apply himself and it seems history is repeating itself. He was on course to re-sit a couple of modules in Aug from his Jan exams, but obviously failing the others means that won't be able to happen.

Not sure how to get through to him that he needs to actually work though... It's not rocket science, is it?! Angry

PUGaLUGS · 23/06/2016 20:46

Oh Horse and Flowers for you xx

Horsemad · 23/06/2016 22:20

Thanks Pugs and Quietly and NiceCardigan, I feel exhausted and a little empty here tonight.

I asked DS what he wants to do and he said he wants to go back. I'm not sure he should if he isn't going to buck his ideas up and I've heard the false promises before, all through his A levels Sad

Very frustrating indeed.

NiceCardigan · 23/06/2016 22:46

I know it seems trite Horsemad but it will pass. I think I would tell him its last chance saloon and then detach if you can. Oh and have Wine
