Dear all,

I have really enjoyed these threads. So if anyone else wants to keep up posts on DC travelling through trials and tribulations of uni life - do post here.
Smile

Have your DC been revising at all for instance? Do you now stand back?

I can't believe that DS will be going into his third year. I've asked him to try and have a drama free year next year but I'm not holding my breath.

Horsemad · 16/08/2017 12:31

Hello, thought I'd update about my DS1 who bailed out earlier this year.

He's got a job with a gaming company, (I'd rather it wasn't gaming, but hey ho), working from home. I don't understand what it is he actually does but he's happy and earning serious money.

He has become tight since he started earning, Grin (was a different kettle of fish when he was spending our money!) and saves really hard.

Just waiting on A level results for DS2 now...

Good to hear how all your offspring are doing; @hadenoughtoday how is your DD now?

hellsbells99 · 16/08/2017 18:37

Hello all. Good to hear the updates.
Horsemad - I am glad your DS is a lot happier and enjoying what he is doing.
Hadenoughtoday - I hope your DD is okay Flowers
My DD bailed during year 1 but has now successfully completed her first year (with good marks) on a different course at a different university. She is like a different person and has thoroughly enjoyed both the course and uni life. DD2 has also finished her first year and also enjoyed her course and uni. Both have worked for half the summer but are probably ready to return to their universities - I think they are getting fed up of me giving them lists of jobs to do.

hellsbells99 · 16/08/2017 18:38

Forgot to say Good Luck to your DS2 tomorrow Horsemad! Hope it all goes to plan.

Horsemad · 16/08/2017 21:20

Thanks hellbells99 Smile

I am really pleased to hear that both your DDs are settled and happy.

hellsbells99 · 16/08/2017 22:00

It is a relief after DD1's terrible first year. I am still very nervous whether she will end finishing her degree but hope so. She is not far from home and pops home frequently which helps her.
Good luck tomorrow!

Horsemad · 17/08/2017 10:04

My DS2 got AAB and got in at his Firm Grin

Happy Happy Horsemad! Grin

welshpixie · 17/08/2017 11:19

Horsemad I am so pleased that your sons have got what they wanted even if it took a bit of time.
I have been a bit wary of posting, DD has done so well this year and everyone else seemed to have problems, but she went to hell and back in her first year so it shows things can be turned around.
Can I have a little brag, she got the highest marks in the year and a special commendation from the Head of the Dept.
Also DNiece got her results today and is off to Uni so happy times here.

Horsemad · 17/08/2017 11:50

Thank you welshpixie. Your DD is doing so well after her tricky start and your niece must be feeling happy and excited too! Smile

hellsbells99 · 17/08/2017 21:55

Well done to Horsemad's DS2!
And to Welshpixie's DD - I am glad she has had such a great year. You must be very proud 😄

sassymuffin · 17/08/2017 23:01

It 's lovely to hear happy updates from everyone! Even though I only left a few comments I still think of this thread around A level results day.

Celebrations here too as DD completed her vac schemes this summer and now has a TC at a US law firm in London staring in 2019

Cant believe how the time has flown.

Haffdonga · 17/08/2017 23:14

Hello old friends Smile. Great to hear good news both from those at uni and those doing other things. Amazing that most of our dcs are into their third years!
Ds1 is well into term already as he's doing his in Oz. All seems well with a vibrant international social scene and a level of academic work that's slightly less intense than it was back home - win win ds Wink . Miss him til it hurts though Meanwhile ds2 has got his first choice at uni (like Horsemad's - congrats!) so here we go again!

Horsemad · 18/08/2017 04:26

Hello sassy & Haffdonga!

I'm currently sat in the car, Mum's Taxi waiting for DS after his Results Celebration Clubbing...

Good to hear your updates, it's amazing how it was only 2 yrs ago our DC went off to uni. How fast has that gone? Shock
These threads were my life support then, especially in the run up to the exams!

Seems to have gone in a flash Smile

Good luck for the next year!

voilets · 18/08/2017 14:35

Lovely to hear all the good news. Fantastic hellsbells and horsemad.

They sort themselves out in the end with supportive and I'd like to say patient mums - but that fails me sometimes Grin

My update DD did really well in 2 AS she took. English was a curse, she found it so hard but she got an A but is def. Dropping it.

Will be glad when all these exams end but musn't wish life away 😀

Glad to hear all the updates.
Well done to Sassy's DD for getting sorted already for life after uni.
Horsemad, glad to hear your DS has found something enjoyable and productive. I hope he is using his earnings to contribute to your broadband costs.
My DS did not succeed in getting a placement for his 'year in industry', so will be going back to uni for his third year. He has spent his summer doing some ad-hoc gardening and cat-sitting, but has now started preliminary work on his 3rd year project.

voilets · 01/09/2017 23:25

Good to hear your Ds is being productive. Impressed he's looking at project.
Let's hope when they look for graduate jobs there are some around.
Is lovely to hear all old names again on here - thread was a life line for me in first semester. I didn't need to worry so much - but I didn't know!

sorry - first comment was for you seimum!

I caught up with a friend who works in the industry where DS was looking for placements. DS had applied for a role with her company, but had not got it. Turns out she had asked the HR dept to invite DS for an assessment day, but he had withdrawn his application. From subsequent quizzing of DS discovered this was due to the assessment day clashing with his plans to see a show in London with his girlfriend, and he didn't want to lose the £80 he had paid for tickets.....
You can lead a horse to water.......

Horsemad · 02/09/2017 20:04

Ooh, that's a hard one seimum. On the one hand, he's been sensible about the money he'd already spent on tickets; on the other, he should have maybe tried to liaise with them or just ditched the day out with the girlfriend!!

seimum · 03/09/2017 12:25

Hi Horsemad. Logically it's a no-brainier. He is spending £000s on his degree, to qualify for his career, so what's an extra £80 in context. If he had had to pay £80 in fares to go for the assessment day, he would have paid and gone.
But people are not logical, and 'lost' money feels worse than money you have not spent yet.

NiceCardigan · 03/09/2017 16:34

Very frustrating seimum but unfortunately it's done now

seimum · 03/09/2017 20:03

Thanks Nicecardigan. Hope he's learnt for next time.

Oldie2017 · 04/09/2017 09:13

Horsemad, well done to the child. My son also got AAB and into firm (and his twin ditto but with AAA although really they are pretty much the same - the B jsut seems to be bad luck on one paper or one badly done paper not that a B is bad in any sense. My mark actually AAB all those years ago - did me no harm).

On careers not that my sons will necessarily follow their sisters into law but I did send them an email this morning on a few timing issues (they usually don't read my emails so I doubt it did much good)..... but the gist was be in time for your applications, internships and deadlines.

Eg the law firm I looked has you apply from October of your second year (i.e. 12 months from now for new starters) on a non law degree for their summer paid vacation placements from which they recruit future lawyers and interview you for your training contract at end of the paid 3 week summer placement. So they will be looking at your first year results in each module and perhaps any work experience in law firms in your first university summer holiday and then for those not doing the placement and not doing law you apply for a training contract from Oct at the start of your third year. If you want the law firm to fund you through your 2 years post grad law which my daughter had then all these pretty early dates are very important.

Horsemad · 04/09/2017 19:12

seimum, hmm when you put it like that I take your point. Hopefully this will stick in his mind for next time Wink

Thanks Oldie, did your DC read your emails? I know what you mean though, just a little advance prep can really pay dividends. As I frequently remind my DS... Smile

voilets · 04/09/2017 21:22

Seimum. Young DC adults often don't get priorities of older adults. They also put off work. It may have made him anxiousbut won't admit that.
So frustrating for parent.
