Dear all,

I have really enjoyed these threads. So if anyone else wants to keep up posts on DC travelling through trials and tribulations of uni life - do post here.
Smile

Have your DC been revising at all for instance? Do you now stand back?

Thanks all. Still no idea what happens next, he 'doesn't know...'

seimum · 02/03/2017 20:27

Hi Horsemad. Sorry to hear about your DS.
Presumably he has time to think about what he wants to do now. There's no need to make quick decisions.

Horsemad · 03/03/2017 20:58

Thanks seimum. It has now been confirmed he cannot continue with his studies.

He hasn't decided if he will stay there and look for a job/accommodation or if he will return home and look for work here.

He is currently looking at this time as his 'summer holiday' Shock and is off abroad at the end of the month to visit his girlfriend.

I can just imagine DH's reaction when I tell him that!

Nice - how did you get on moving your DS back into halls?

voilets · 03/03/2017 21:19

How disappointing horsemad. Was talking elsewhere about teenage and young adult kids and how they can annoy and frustrate us.

Just keep on at him. He's got to finance himself somehow. Hopefully he'll settle on something sensible soon.

Am sad for you all but issues eventually resolve

horsemad sorry to hear about your DS - must be a shock for him and you.

We continue to have issues with my DD mainly due to mental health and eating disorder and self harm! She continues to make plans and has had her dissertation approved just a shame she is in such a bad place mentally. It's hard when she ignores my messages and doesn't call home because i worry so much about her. She has reached out to the counselling team at uni (finally) and has an apt with them in a couple of weeks.

Can't believe our children are on year 2 - it won't be long before its all over.

Hope everyone is as well as can be.
Oh I've had a name change Shock

Horsemad · 03/03/2017 21:29

Was trying to work out who you were Had enough, think I've got you now!

Thanks for your support too voilets Smile

NiceCardigan · 03/03/2017 21:31

It like looks like your DS is not quite facing up to reality yet Horsemad hopefully he'll come down to earth soon

Just spent two days in Durham helping DS sort stuff out. His college have been brilliant and have offered mediation to sort out the remaining issues. It's a pity it's a 500 mile round trip as it's not so easy to get up th

NiceCardigan · 03/03/2017 21:32

There when things go wrong

MrsBartlet · 03/03/2017 21:38

Glad his college have been so good NiceCardigan. Hope he settles back in soon.

Horsemad · 03/03/2017 21:44

Yep, DS in Cloud Cuckoo Land Hmm

Reassuring for you that your DS's college have been helpful Nice; makes a difficult time a little easier, hopefully.

NiceCardigan · 03/03/2017 21:47

Had a nice chat with the college principal this morning and am reassured that they are looking out for DS. Oh and DS set it up so I wasn't being embarrassing!

Horsemad · 03/03/2017 21:54

Ha ha! Grin

Hadenoughtoday · 03/03/2017 22:04

nice I've missed what's happening with your DS but it sounds that things are being sorted and how lovely that you have the reassurance

Haffdonga · 03/03/2017 23:02

Oh it's nice to see you all. I had lost this thread and thought you'd all gone quiet. Horsemad, Nicecardi and hadenough I'm so sorry for the tough times your dcs are going through. It certainly doesn't get any easier when they're older, does it? We just can't help as much as we could when they were little. Sad Horsemad ds's mate was told to leave his course. He's now happier than ever and earning more than ds hopes to earn even after finishing his degree. i hope it all works out for the best for your ds.

As for us it's going too well. Ds has gained a placement for a year next year in Australia. He's so excited and happy. I'm delighted for him. He's worked really hard and deserves it but I'm quietly a bit gutted for myself. I'm putting on a big smile but I'm secretly terrified that he'll never come back because of the girl he's followed over there Meanwhile ds2 has been offered a place at uni on the course of his dreams so a properly empty nest looms.

Horsemad · 03/03/2017 23:19

Good to hear your news Haff Smile Australia sounds great for a placement, I hope your DS enjoys it.

I am just going through the uni visit days with DS2; just one more to visit then he can decide which one to firm.

MrsBartlet · 04/03/2017 07:46

Wow Haffdonga a placement in Australia sounds amazing - where in Australia will he be based? I spent time in Australia after university and my parents were worried that I wouldn't come back. However, I started going out with dh 3 months before I went and then they knew I would come back. I came back after 7 months, instead of the planned year and moved in with dh on the day I got back Grin

My ds (Y11) has decided he wants to do American Studies with a year in America. I think it would be an amazing life experience but he is on a warning not to fall in love with any American girls unless they are prepared to move over here Wink

voilets · 06/03/2017 18:12

Years abroad are great - coming of age. My DM thought I wouldn't return. Did and 3 years later met a DH from same country but we stayed here.Smile

Glad to hear Mums on here are helping DC - as much support as possible I think! Glad nice that Durham are being supportive. It does feel sometimes like they are in a huge vacuum and we have to mop up hundreds of miles away.

My DD is dead keen on Durham so would love to hear how they cater for freshers and any problems actually.

Fairenuff · 12/03/2017 12:58

Hi all. Lovely to see this thread still going and the fantastic support and advice as strong as ever Smile

My dd has had a great year and a half and will be having a year abroad in the South of France starting in September. She is currently home for the weekend to catch up with old school friends, going back tonight and will be back here in two weeks for a whole month for Easter.

Horsemad · 14/03/2017 22:46

DS1 coming home on Sunday. He hasn't been very communicative with us, so it will be interesting to see what his plans are from now on.

hellsbells99 · 15/03/2017 07:56

Hi Horsemad. Sorry your DS hasn't done well in the exams. As he is retaking the year, then won't they still allow resits in August as though he is doing the year for the first time?
You may remember my DD dropped out totally last year (around this time). She started a new course at a different uni in September and her experience has been totally different. She is happy and her January results were good. I remember your DS is doing a different course from what he applied for. Do you think this is part of the problem - has he not enjoyed the course? I hope everything works out in the end. There is no rush to make any decisions. DD ended up with a job in a shop for a few months which helped her think about what she wanted to do next.

Horsemad · 15/03/2017 12:08

No resits allowed in a repeat year at his uni hellsbells, so he will have to have a long hard think about where he goes from here.

hellsbells99 · 15/03/2017 12:56

I hadn't realised that Horsemad. I thought as you were paying to start again effectively, your DS would be treated the same as the rest of his new freshers. Good luck.

Horsemad · 15/03/2017 18:21

Thanks Smile Not sure if that is the case at all unis. He'll be ok, just got to get him to focus on what he will do next.

NiceCardigan · 19/03/2017 19:43

DS is home for the Easter holidays now I don't think any of his friends are back yet but he seems happy to just chill. He has some work lined up for a couple of weeks with DD1 which is just as well as the bank of mum and dad has well and truly dried up since we are paying for college and the rent on the flat he's moved out of. He seems happy and he relaxed though which is an improvement on when I went up to Durham to move him.

seimum · 23/03/2017 19:15

Hi NiceCardigan. Glad to hear your DS is happy.
Paying two lots of rent is awful, though. Were you not able to sublet the room in the flat?
My DS is back tomorrow. The only thing he has arranged is a holiday ( unless our neighbour needs cat sitting)
