Dear all,

I have really enjoyed these threads. So if anyone else wants to keep up posts on DC travelling through trials and tribulations of uni life - do post here.
Smile

Have your DC been revising at all for instance? Do you now stand back?

Good for your DD to find a new course Hellsbells. A colleague's DD struggled through unhappy with a course and it did not go as well as she would have hoped at end this year. Better to make a fresh start. Only one chance these days of a full course for most because of expense - so she's not wasting her time.

Good luck with DD2. Fingers crossed - all will work out.

There seems always to be a worry with DC and yes it gets expensive!!!

Thanks Violets! Yes, they are allowed 1 'mistake' year in terms of student finance.

Horsemad · 20/08/2016 08:41

So pleased your DD got sorted hellsbells99 Smile

It is going to be busy in your house, getting 2 ready for Uni!

hellsbells99 · 20/08/2016 09:25

Yes and it looks like they may be going on the same day ....to different cities (although both Northern). I have told DD1 she is lower priority this year! If necessary she can go on the train with a rucksack and we will bring the rest of her stuff the following day. She is happy with that as she knows the city well and has friends there. Hopefully we may be able to move one in on the Friday and one on the Saturday!

Horsemad · 20/08/2016 09:42

Oh the logistics! Grin Last year at a uni open day I met a mum of triplets who were all hoping to go to Uni!! That was a bit mind boggling, the thought of 3 lots of stuff to get!

hellsbells99 · 20/08/2016 23:51

I could not cope with the logistics of triplets! My 2 are bad enough being so close together - they act like they are twins some of the time. DD1 has said she won't have much of a reason to come home a lot next year as her sister and her best friends are all off to uni this year. She said she might come and visit the cats! DD2 has gone to V-Fest to celebrate A level results. DD1 and her friend have bought day tickets for tomorrow to join them and 2 hours ago DD1 has announced that they are now going to stay over and camp. We have managed to find a campsite close by and find our 2nd tent - she is going to get up early and find the rest of the stuff. I do wish she would learn to plan!

Just over two weeks before DS goes back to uni. Where has the summer gone?

Quietlygoingmad67 · 07/09/2016 19:52

Hope everyone has had a good summer - my DD goes back on Sunday but her lectures don't start til 26th. She is moving into private student halls in Zone 1 (ie expensive) I'm really concerned about her mental health and eating disorder but she wants to go back and I have to trust at nearly 20 she can be sensible and look after herself. She has contacted several museums to see about volunteer roles as she struggles with friendships and gets lonely. I'm dreading her going back to be honest Sad

Horsemad · 07/09/2016 20:07

Hi Quietly, the fact she's keen to go back is encouraging though Smile and the museum volunteering could be very useful. Will she offload to you if need be?

Quietlygoingmad67 · 07/09/2016 20:13

Sometimes she does. I've spoken to her about registering for support at Uni and also she will be able to have Skype appointments with her eating disorder counsellor on a weekly basis so trying to cover all basis! After lasts year disaster with her flat mates I'm really hoping she will have nicer ones this year. Gosh this parenting doesn't get much easier as they become adults does it?

How has your Ds been over the summer?

Horsemad · 07/09/2016 20:32

He's been away for 6 weeks (separate jaunts, week at a time sort of thing) over the course of his summer.

When he is here he spends a lot of time on his PC - I imagine this is what has been going on whilst at Uni last year...

I've given him plenty of chores to do when we are at work/school, which he does without too much whingeing!

NiceCardigan · 07/09/2016 20:33

We took DS back last weekend but it was only temporary as he's home again on the train next week to go on holiday with us. We've insisted on more contact this time as he had some problems last year and tried to deal with everything on his own rather than speaking to us. I think he was very grateful to me for sorting out the issue of the landlady being on holiday and no keys available when he was supposed to be moving in (very stressful!) so perhaps he'll realise that it is ok to ask for help.

nagsandovalballs · 07/09/2016 20:43

Hi quietly, is your daughter at king's? Do pm me if you like as I have just finished being a lecturer there. Maybe I can be of help if she's arts and hums.

GypsyFl0ss · 19/09/2016 08:40

Hope everyone is doing ok? DD is here until the end of the month, she's desperate to go back! Can't believe we've got second years Smile

muffinmonster · 19/09/2016 13:04

Dropped DD back yesterday - she's planning to join in the Fresher's week socialising. More stuff than ever to transport and the lift to her 2nd-floor flat was broken (although we were provided with a helper to carry bag and boxes).

Decorhate · 19/09/2016 17:30

My dd also went back yesterday. Also had a lot more stuff than last year so not enough room for us all to go. Dh says her house is nice. I'd planned to go up for a day in a few weeks but trains are ££ so may wait a bit longer

Horsemad · 19/09/2016 18:38

DS goes back on Sat. I really hope he makes a go of it this year ...

Have both your DDs gone now hellsbells99?

seimum · 19/09/2016 19:42

DS also going back on Saturday.
His course includes a 'year in industry' next year, and he is having to apply for placements already! The deadline for applications for many employers schemes is Oct/Nov, apparently.
Feels a bit like UCAS all over again, but without the structure or support.

Horsemad · 19/09/2016 20:00

It really is neverending, seimum, isn't it?!

hellsbells99 · 20/09/2016 15:53

Both my DDs have now gone Horsemad. Has your DS started again? Is he looking forward to it?

MrsBartlet · 20/09/2016 16:07

Dd goes back on 30th. She is really looking forward to freshers week without the pain of being an actual fresher Grin

Horsemad · 20/09/2016 17:09

He goes on Saturday hellsbells99, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that last year was a wake up call. Hmm

Have both your DDs settled in ok?

hellsbells99 · 20/09/2016 17:16

DD1 seems fine so far and is only a 45 minutes train ride from home which is comforting.
DD2 has had a wobble - unfortunately she is a real home bird. She does seem happier today though. I have said I will drive over and see her on Sunday for lunch if I need to. I think she will be fine when the course starts properly and she has some structure.
Good luck to your DS.
Hope your DD enjoys her non-freshers week MrsB!

Horsemad · 23/09/2016 22:22

I don't think we're going to get everything in the car! He has more stuff this year because he joined an organisation that requires lots of kit, so he has a HUGE bag just for that!

There may not be room for me as well... Shock

MrsBartlet · 23/09/2016 22:30

Hope you manage to squeeze in Horsemad! We will have the same problem next week due to the huge amount of soft furnishings dd has bought for her new room!
