Dear all,

I have really enjoyed these threads. So if anyone else wants to keep up posts on DC travelling through trials and tribulations of uni life - do post here.

Have your DC been revising at all for instance? Do you now stand back?

DD got her results yesterday, I am so proud of her, she got a first, which considering she lost her DF in February is nothing short of a miracle. She leaves tomorrow to move across country as she has a job for the summer, she has also sorted out accommodation for next year. Did I say I was proud of her Grin

Stopyourhavering · 01/07/2016 09:17

dd2 is currently on holiday in Thailand with bf and its my birthday today, she messaged me at midnight to wish me a happy birthday and to tell me she'd got. 2:1 in her first year exams!( despite her being sure she'd failed an accountancy module!).... I'm over the moon as she has dyslexia and dyscalculia and had done so well to get through first year
we'd booked a family holiday which would have been in middle of any resits so I can now relax and look forward to us all chilling out in the Greek islands!!...hope everyone else gets their results soon xx

Quietlygoingmad67 · 01/07/2016 10:07

welsh and stop I love proud mum moments - well done to both your DD's Star

welshpixie · 01/07/2016 10:55

Congratulations stop. there was a lovely phrase on her email 'passed and proceed'.it reminded me of monopoly pass go and collect 200 pounds

NiceCardigan · 01/07/2016 11:03

DS got results last week and got a nice high 2:1 so he was very pleased. He's chosen all his optional courses for next year now and plans to get ahead on his reading over the summer.

Horsemad · 01/07/2016 17:51

Some great results from your DC welsh, Stop and Nice Smile Very pleased for you all.

welshpixie · 01/07/2016 23:36

Horsemad How is it going with your ds?

Horsemad · 02/07/2016 05:49

Not much really welsh - thanks for asking. He says he wants to go back, won't call/email the tutor's; says the work isn't too hard, which makes me think he's just made no effort (too busy gaming Angry ) and refuses to leave his gaming PC at home, although I am still going to work on trying to persuade him to do so.

He's an idiot.

I have had him doing lots of boring chores. He is not living here, not working and just gaming all the time, no way!

Fairenuff · 02/07/2016 12:53

The only leverage you might have Horse is to stop funding him, or cut financial support right back. If he wants to live as an independent adult and stand by his own decisions, then let him.

The result being that he either gets a part time job to fund his studies (and therefore take them more seriously) or he agrees to focus on getting better results with your continued financial support.

Just a thought.

Decorhate · 02/07/2016 16:01

Does he not have a summer job Horsemad? I'd be thinking of insisting on that so he saves some money to contribute to his living expenses next year, given that it's now likely you will have an extra year to support him through.

bigbluebus · 02/07/2016 19:03

Been away from this thread for a while as I thought it had started to dry up a little - but how wrong could I be!
Horsemad We are in a similar situation to you. DS said his exams hadn't gone well and when the results came out he was right - he failed 4 out of 4. Fortunately he passed the 4 he sat in January. He had initially said thepapers had questions in he hadn't been taught but closer grilling reveals he had been taught it but hadn't gone over it until revision and then realised he didn't understand it, by which time it was too late to do all the work he needed. He also says the work isn't too hard and I think he has just spend too much time doing other things on his laptop.

He came home on 7th June and we wenton holiday last week. We took him with us as his exam results were due out on day 2 of the holidays so we dodn't want to leave him at home alone knwing it wasn't going to be good news. His instructions were to get in touch with his tutor before entering for resits - but his tutor just said "enter for the resits". The resits are in August spread out over 2 weeks and the timetable doesn't come out until the end of July. As we/he will need to sort out accomodation (his new lease doesn't start until Sept) and flights that is not entirely helpful. Resit fees have cost £170 not to mention what the rest of it is going to cost so DS is under no illusions that we are not impressed at his lack of effort.

I had hoped he would get a job earning decent money over the Summer, but now he has got revision to do as he is adamant he can pass the exams and cope with Yr2. But revision means he can only do his ad hoc shifts in the bar he was working at before which only earns pocket money and won't cover any of the additional costs he has incurred nor his expenditure for next year.

I would live to take the tough line with DS and make him suffer the financial consequences of this but as he has AS it is hard to do that as it is amazing that he has actually coped so far away from home for the last 9 months even if it is an expensive experiment if he doesn't pass the exams.

PUGaLUGS · 02/07/2016 20:50

Sorry to hear things haven't picked up with DS Horsemad. Must be a right old worry for you.

We moved DS into his 8 student house share today (he is there till Thurs when he will get the train back so we can go on hols). I don't think they have talked about bills yet Hmm. His rent is £315 per month with bills on top. I have told him in no uncertain terms he has to look for a job when he gets back.

He came out with a 2:1.

Horsemad · 02/07/2016 22:29

No holiday job, he's away on 3 separate things during Jul/Aug (all arranged before the exam results).

We're cutting his allowance by quite a lot but whether that spurs him on remains to be seen. He'll probably just get an overdraft, knowing him Hmm

I've been up to Newcastle today with DS2 for their open day - only ever been through on the train so was nice to have a look around. 😀

Headofthehive55 · 03/07/2016 08:46

My DD got her results and passed. I don't think I have been more pleased. Not easy this parenting stuff. It was easier when they were little!

Horsemad · 03/07/2016 09:16

Well done to your DD Headofthehive55, you can relax now! Wink

circular · 03/07/2016 11:34

Halfdonga DD' tenancy just started too. I think they are sticking with the agents utility recommendation for gas and electric, and they said 'should be' in all 6 names. Same for water. Though they have one main name/email as 'main contact' but no bank details. Believe same cost regardless of payment method, and no standing charges, so can split bills when they come in. Not sure how detailed they will be about the summer when some are there more than others.
Stuff like broadband needs to be single name and DIrect Debit, though at least that's a finite amount with unlimited and no landline.

Shame bills not included, but guess it's the way it works in their area. One or two properties were, but the extra was about £125 pm.

hellsbells99 · 03/07/2016 13:50

Well done for all those DCs that passed their exams and commiserations to those that didn't (and hope the retakes go well)

PUGaLUGS · 03/07/2016 14:15

Ah so that's why it seemed extra busy with traffic and parking up there yesterday Horse. In DS's new road it is pay and display parking on one side and double yellows on the other, there wasn't a spare space to be seen. We had to park on the double yellows to unload the car.

Horsemad · 03/07/2016 16:36

We parked at Heworth and caught the Metro. Smile

PUGaLUGS · 03/07/2016 19:54

Good plan!

MarianneSolong · 04/07/2016 11:07

Feel like the umbilical cord should never have been cut. Offspring - still 18 - has gone off to China for a month.

voilets · 04/07/2016 11:16

Wow mariannesolong how adventurous of your DC. Scary for mum but what an experience.

Bigbluebus I agree going to uni when they have any SEN is a huge step. Hopefully, he'll crack on while at home and pull it all around.

Congrats to all DC who passed. I'm feeling so relieved , we have a summer with no exams after GCSEs for DD and Ist year uni for DS.

Commiserations to all those parents who have to help their DC along this summer with re-takes. Things usually sort themselves out for the best (I'm an eternal optimist despite being a worrier!)

Smile Bit more sun here today!

bigbluebus · 04/07/2016 19:54

Thanks violets. He says he can pass them. I am waking him up at 'normal people's time' (as opposed to student/teenager time) every day so he can get up and start studying. What I am not doing is standing over him, so if he is using the laptop again to partake in chats on Facebook or You Tube videos rather than studying then on his head be it. Have told him we will not finance him indefinitely.

PUGaLUGS · 05/07/2016 06:08

I don't know why I thought DS had got a 2.1. He messaged me at some ridiculous hour through the night although my phone was downstairs and I have just seen it, he got a First. Well done to boy1 Hmm

Horsemad · 05/07/2016 10:19

Well done Pug's DS! Smile
