Do we have a thread already?
ds1 has decided to definitely apply to Oxford to do Biochemistry. He will probably apply to St John's.

Well done to your DD Marianne. The waiting for an interview is killing mine. Hopefully she will hear this week. I know that St Catherine's are sending out invites already.

cathyandclaire · 10/11/2014 23:21

Well done Marianne, DD has an interview at Clare too :)

PD6966 · 11/11/2014 00:05

Wished I'd found this thread sooner - it's been an interesting read Smile and a comfort to some, I'm sure.
So far, DS has had an offer (AAB) from Queen Mary for English - his insurance. He's been invited for interview at UCL next week and is awaiting news after sitting the ELAT. Still to hear from Bristol and Warwick - has anyone else heard about offers/interviews there?

GraceFox · 11/11/2014 07:30

Ds waiting to hear from Cambridge about possible interview. Getting his essays ready to send. He hasn't admitted it but I think he's a bit anxious because he hasn't received any offers yet for English. Early days I know, but I'm almost willing York/Edinburgh et al to get in touch!

AtiaoftheJulii · 11/11/2014 08:21

PD - Bristol are notorious for taking ages to send offers. When dd's English teacher learnt yesterday that dd got a Classics offer from Bristol last week, she was really surprised!

Littleham · 11/11/2014 09:58

No news from Bristol here for History as yet, but doesn't really matter as she will have to discard at least one of the 'higher' offers anyway.

Good luck to your son GraceFox. I think English is quite slow to give out offers. Welcome PD6966 - hope your ds gets what he wants too.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/11/2014 10:06

Fab news re the interviews! Woohoooo!

DD has had an offer for physics from Bristol - AAA, but we know of others in diff subjects still waiting.

RandomFriend · 11/11/2014 10:09

DD has an offer from Bristol for music. The offer is exactly as stated on the website. The offer came through about a week after she added Bristol as a choice.

There was a nice post upthread with someone explaining how offers are made. It seems that for some disciplines, an offer can be made by the administration without the department seeing the file. These offers would come through very quickly. This would be for standard applications meeting all the criteria. Applicants that have non-standard qualifications would have to be seen by the department, or at least by a senior administrator to check the equivalence.

For other disciplines, the department wants to see all of the applications. I guess these offers would take longer to come through.

RandomFriend · 11/11/2014 10:11

Marianne and cathyandclair, Well done to your DDs.

MadameJosephine · 11/11/2014 10:12

DS is off to bristol tomorrow for his open day/interview for Maths and computing so hopefully will have an offer from them soon.

Exciting that the Cambridge interviews are starting to come through, he just posted all his proof of UMS/fee status to Christ's yesterday, hopefully we'll hear soon

MadameJosephine · 11/11/2014 10:13

Congratulations to those who have interviews already and good luck to all, it's all becoming very real now

RandomFriend · 11/11/2014 10:15

MadamJosephine good luck for your DS at his open day /interview.

Are you going with him? Please come back and share your impressions, we are overseas and so cannot visit. It most likely to be DDs insurance offer.

MadameJosephine · 11/11/2014 11:46

Will do random he's never been to Bristol before, it was a last minute addition to his UCAS form, hopefully he'll like it and it'll be an insurance for him too

MadameJosephine · 11/11/2014 11:47

Sorry forgot to say I won't be going with him, the train fare was too pricey for a start!

Figmentofmyimagination · 11/11/2014 12:20

I'm a bit irritated that DD has been targeted in the post by an "Oxbridge" interview preparation company. Official looking A4 brown envelope addressed to her. I guess her personal information must have been sold somewhere along the line, unless she has inadvertently ticked yes to something, which is always possible...

Littleham · 11/11/2014 12:31

DD2 had that as well, plus a phone call. Helpfully they did a 'free' mock interview on the phone (although whether it was much use I don't know)after which she binned the stuff. Seems it is big business!

cathyandclaire · 11/11/2014 12:37

Hi there! Good luck in Bristol madam's DS.
I have posted a thread asking for opinions on how work and stress levels have changed at Oxbridge since the dark ages eighties when DH was there. DD has heard some scary stories and any info would be very welcome!

GraceFox · 11/11/2014 13:15

Ah is that so, Littleham? I suppose English is so oversubscribed that it's bound to take longer to sift through candidates. I think my ds1 had a couple of reassuring unconditionals under his belt before the end of November (less popular arts subject).
He's at Oxford now, enjoying the course but reports that at least 1 tutor is v strict about essay deadlines - work to be handed in to porters lodge by a specific time, where it's stamped and handed over. Unlike dh's day when he says it was much more lax Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/11/2014 16:11

Offer from Edinburgh today. Not sure what though! But she's chuffed.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/11/2014 16:14

Ah. I do now know AAA. Same as Bristol and Newcastle.

RandomFriend · 11/11/2014 17:00

Well done to your DD, RBOTP

How is it possible to choose between identical offers to make one of them "insurance"?

Littleham · 11/11/2014 17:33

I reckon that is why they do it - none of them want to be insurance choice. Annoying isn't it?

Great news RBOTP.

RandomFriend · 11/11/2014 17:40

I guess it must be really messy for university departments, trying to work out how many students they might get.

One of DD's friends is holding five offers and has until May to decide which three to reject completely.

Littleham · 11/11/2014 18:03

For your Cambridge dc's, application statistics are available...
