Does anyone else have a PG preschooler?

Are you worried about them starting school? Considering a tutor? Private? Homeschool? The whole thing seems overwhelming if I'm honest. It feels like this country isn't set up to handle PG tots. The school mine has been offered does have a (i think from what they've said) HG child in reception who they've had to readjust for which is a bit of a relief though.

How old is a "tot", exactly? I've got a horrible feeling op is going to claim he's two. Or 18 months...

God my daughter has a high iq, is an all round gifted makes me look thick young woman. She's struggled socially as it is with the peers that are her equivalent let alone skipping several years at school.

School doesn't just educate academically, it educates you socially too.

I'm quite keen to know how young your child is op. My daughters nursery suspected it around aged two but it wasn't confirmed by teachers until age 5.

My 7 year old understands how car engines work, and the principles of driving (what a clutch is, how gears work, how fuel combusts). Do I sign her up for F1 or let her loose on the bypass in my sports car?

ChipsAndKetchup · 21/06/2018 19:55

My 3 year old told me what a hydraulic boom arm is today. I'm thinking of skipping primary school altogether because he's clearly WAY AHEAD. Confused

Dobbythesockelf · 21/06/2018 20:08

chips another Blaze and the Monster Machines fan? My dd likes to tell people all about kinetic energy.

EveningHare · 21/06/2018 20:10

I feel very sad for children whose parents focus so heavily on the academic side of development. There are so many other facets to childhood.

this!

my ds is in the G&T streams at school, and panics if he gets a low score. no matter how much we tell him that the scores aren't as important as working hard is. he's not had a low mark yet.

my other DS explained to me about non-newtonion /stuff fluid?/ and also how to build a nuclear reactor before he was 10... i dont know if he was right....

I’m sure if your child has SEN then the school Senco can provide advice. How does the problem affect your dc’s ability to engage with the curriculum?

Ilikesweetpeas · 21/06/2018 20:20

Your poor child...

Marmite27 · 21/06/2018 20:22

We watched the hydraulic boom arm episode this week too Grin

DoJo · 21/06/2018 20:29

So this child, who is somewhat over 3 1/2, has the abilities of a 4-year-old? That doesn't sound 'profoundly gifted' to me...

DoJo · 21/06/2018 20:30

Or is that a typo and they have the abilities of a 45-year-old?

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 21/06/2018 20:30

WOw, the skills of a 4 year old!

Yes that sounds like somone who should be put into year 5....

Unless you made a mistake and thought years were labled by ages?

PaintBySticker · 21/06/2018 20:31

“A reception aged child into year 5! Are you serious? Don't you want them to make friends? Have fun? Play? You are setting your child up for a life time of misery. ”

This. I can’t believe that however ‘profoundly gifted’ your child is they won’t have more in common with other 4 or 5 year olds than 9 and 10 year olds.

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 21/06/2018 20:33

Has your little one been IQ tested? Perhaps the person who undertook that test could guide you.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 21/06/2018 20:35

I was just 3 when I started primary 1. It sacked being so little.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 21/06/2018 20:35

Sucked not sacked.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 21/06/2018 20:37

So tot child has the abilities of a 4/5 year old at 3 Confused.

IDearlyLoveALaugh · 21/06/2018 20:43

My three year old can read, write his name, do number bonds to 10 and can explain distillation.

He's also THREE socially, and I wouldn't ever deprive him of a childhood with his peers.

I want my son to have a full rounded childhood and "knowing stuff" is basically a memory exercise and a pattern finding exercise to generalise knowledge at this age- the intricacies of social interaction, right and wrong, the importance of being kind- THOSE things should have a heavy weight too.

Jesuisleloup · 21/06/2018 20:47

Did you mean enrol him in to the school year for 5 year olds (year 1 I think ) ?

RoboJesus · 21/06/2018 20:47

And now people are just making things up, thanks for ruining my thread
