DH been told he will only be out for 5 mins - seems a lot of effort (and extra staff?) just for that.

DH just had a local. Is there a reason your DH has to have a general?

Acanthus · 14/06/2010 16:19

My DH had a local too. Don't think he enjoyed it much, mind! But local is safer than general I think.

Alouiseg · 14/06/2010 16:20

My dh had a local, I watched!!

merlin · 14/06/2010 16:24

Chickens - no health reason - was just told that's what they do in that particular hospital!.

He's never had a GA and I'm sh**ng myself!!!

Have told him to get all his papers in order

Actually, my DH was told he could have a general, but was advised against it because of the extra risks involved. Could your DH be opting for the general because he's scared?

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 14/06/2010 16:26

DH had his op in a doctor's surgery. He had to shuffle out past all the old dears waiting to see the nurse. It was The Shuffle Of Shame, apparently

merlin · 14/06/2010 16:28

Well, he told me a local wasn't an option - just seems odd to me.

I wouldn't of thought he would be scared - well only as much as any man who's about to have their bits hacked about!!!!!

OP posts:
ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 14/06/2010 16:30

I suspect that a local isn't an option for him. Which is fine, and it's his choice. As a rule, I think that any procedure which can be done under local, is.

merlin · 14/06/2010 16:36

Chickens - I'm going to ask him about it tonight - the more I think about it the more a GA worries me!

DP just had a local -he wasn't given a choice.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 14/06/2010 16:40

DH wasn't offered the choice, he asked and was told it was possible, but not advised. He was understandably anxious about being conscious while someone sliced in to his testicles. In the end, he was a brave soldier I am actually very impressed, as I wouldn't fancy chatting to the surgeon while he used a laser on my genitals.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 14/06/2010 16:45

How did you all get your DH's to agree to this?
Dh feels in principle it is ok but the reality of it just scares him so much.
I can't force him and wouldnt but I do think if he can get his head round it it is the best solution for our family.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 14/06/2010 16:48

I might die if I get pregnant again. It was definitely my top trump.

merlin · 14/06/2010 16:49

He was surprisingly willing actually - the lure of not having to use condoms anymore did it for him I think!!!!

merlin · 14/06/2010 16:50

To make matters worse his consultant is called Mr Pain - I kid you not!!!!

DH had a general, didn't seem to any other option offered, as you say only out for a few minutes. I think it was a Marie Stopes clinic long time ago now so can't remember much except he was rather groggy and bad tempered afterwards but it was all his suggestion

paddingtonbear1 · 14/06/2010 16:51

dh is having this done at a clinic this Friday. Only under local though, I didn't think GA was the norm. He's having the 'newer' method apparently, (no scalpel)!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 14/06/2010 16:52

That's what DH had. Very little scarring.

pagwatch · 14/06/2010 16:52

DH had his under local. he was a bit but he def didn't want a GA with all the faff thatthat creates.

I was very nice though - I collected him from hospital and everything

BTPOG I didn't even ask DH. He saidthat we def didn't want any more children and the options for me were so much more complicated and serious than the ones for him. So he just booked himself in.

Lovely man

expatinscotland · 14/06/2010 16:57

DH had a local. He didn't want a GA as he had to get himself home from hospital.

Yes, he did. And that included a taxi, a train, a ferry and another taxi.

He was offered a choice, but he said no to GA because he said that would be wussy .

He's well 'ard, him.

Actually, he's never had a canula and didn't fancy one after seeing the back of my entire hand bruised for weeks from one of them.

pagwatch · 14/06/2010 17:01

expat
I bet he enjoys telling people that story too
well ard Mr Expat

merlin · 14/06/2010 17:06

Hey Expat - you callin my DH 'wussy'? ............... I agree

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 14/06/2010 17:19

Oh, yes, pag, it's great for loads of mileage.

Especially the getting himself home from hospital.

It is a huge distance.

I had a ERPC under GA at 5.30PM one day, and the next morning by 8AM I did a 60-mile journey home on my own.

So I tell him, 'Tell it to the hand, homeboy!'

NickOfTime · 14/06/2010 17:25

dh had a local. and drove himself home.

i'd had a cs and 2 vbacs, and the most recent vbac had ended with a brain damaged baby - it was pretty clear to him that he was off for the snip asap, as we were both pretty clear that we weren't going to have any more.

i'm pretty sure that in most places you have to beg for a ga. and in most places (unless medically essential) they say no.

expatinscotland · 14/06/2010 17:30

I had a forceps, a drug free delivery, both of which he saw and then a ventouse (and 2nd degree tear that needed stitched). Plus a missed miscarriage that I had to have a ERPC for.

I told him I'd be happy to have my tubes tied, which, in our NHS trust, would mean that major journey and, as it's a GA procedure, hospital overnight.

I told him after that I'd go straight into Glasgow and get a flight to my parents to recover, since I know he'd expect me to be up and at it with the kids after a day or two.

And I'd be back in a fortnight, so he'd need to book off all that time from work as he'd be playing single dad for that time.

Or he could have the snip.

Guess which he chose?
