Will you sign a petition to help women with endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a horrible disease which affects about 2 million women in the UK. It is debilitating, incredibly painful and can impact upon fertility, as well as all other aspects of a woman's life.

I know. I have it. And I'd like there to be earlier diagnosis, better management of the symptoms and pain, and in the long run, a cure.

At the moment, the average length of time between onset of symptoms and diagnosis is eight years. When I was diagnosed eight years ago, the average length of time was seven years. Treatments range from nothing, to drug therapy (often with drugs with lasting side effects - one puts the body into menopause, no joke when you're 22), to surgery.

More people need to be aware of this disease and the effect it has on women (and their loved ones).

Done. Sent it to a pal as well.

vicdubya · 27/07/2005 22:40

Oh, yes, I have it too. Diagnosis took 5 years.

Just going to take a look, HM.

hunkermunker · 27/07/2005 22:40

Thanks, EPIS. Have no idea who started this petition, btw - wasn't me - but had to post it as it's an issue so close to my heart

Incredible how long it takes to diagnose, given how common it is, isn't it?!

OP posts:
vicdubya · 27/07/2005 22:46

Yes, I was (mis)diagnosed with everything from urinary tract infections to having "too small a cervix".

I saw 5 GP's over the 5 years and it was only the 5th one who even suggested it.

LittleStarsweeper · 28/07/2005 13:11

done and forwarded

MeerkatsUnite · 28/07/2005 13:13

HM,

I was eventually diagnosed with endo at 31; I have had this since I was 14 years of age (I know this now). My periods were extremely painful from the get-go.

Have you seen the National Endometriosis Society's website?. They have actively campaigned to Parliament re getting help for women with endo. You may want to contact them as well.

Their website address is www.endo.org.uk. Would recommend that any woman who suffers from this get in touch with them.

SaintGeorge · 28/07/2005 14:18

hunkermunker · 28/07/2005 15:35

jayzmummy · 28/07/2005 15:48

Have done it and forwarded it to my friends.

I was dx with Endometriosis at the age of 19. Enduced menopause at 20 and hysterectomy at 21.Its a horrible disease.

SaintGeorge · 28/07/2005 15:49

Am I missing something then, because I can only see 10 names on that petition?

Come on ladies - surely someone else must want to sign this.

hunkermunker · 28/07/2005 16:29

Yes, am a member of the Endometriosis Society - lots of good work being done there too, on not much money.

Come on ladies! This is something that will either affect you or somebody you know and care about.
