if my sinuses exploded it would be quite a relief.

just a very congested cold, over the worst of the shivers and aches now. am the worlds worst patient when it comes to blocked nose and sinues. utter baby.

have tried:
lemsip, karvol steaming (b0y that stung my throat) and ibuprofen this am. made no difference. so resorted to otrivine which worked for a little bit.

tonight its sudafed, ibuprofen and otrivine (and a little whiskey)

anything I can send dh for tomorrow that is more effective? cos I'm driving him mad with my patheticness.

Try massaging your face.

I Feel Your Pain, btw

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2010 22:43

I did try that, it was at least a diversion, thank you though.
my condolences for your sinus suffering.

will be back later or in the am for other thoughts. did read about chewing an onion.....

RustyBear · 22/03/2010 22:49

I never find sudafed touches my sinus pain - I always use sinutab (only from pharmacies, not supermarkets)
Karvol plug-in at night is also very helpful.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/03/2010 09:36

I will try sinutab today, thanks RB. feels like its spreading to my ears.
rotten snot.

Flannel soaked in hot water left to cool a wee bit then lay it over your sinuses and sort of pull your skin over the sinuses out towards your ears - should help clear it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/03/2010 12:26

I'll try that. thanks!

coldtits · 23/03/2010 17:09

try chewing a chilli. It always makes my face stream.

Pumphreydidit · 23/03/2010 17:15

Try following the line from the fold of your nose along your cheekbone with one finger. You will feel where the blocked bit is. The hot flannel is soothing.

Eat lots of garlic too.

BlairsWitch · 23/03/2010 17:18

Use a cooled down hot water bottle (as warm as you like really). Put it over your face (bear with me) and then massage from under your eys to your ears when your face is v warm. That should shift a lot of it. Warm flannel works too but I am a bit of a sadist....

southeastastra · 23/03/2010 17:24

have you tried a rinse or neti pot?

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 23/03/2010 17:32

I feel your pain, literally. I'm stuffed up with terrible sinusitis, my face has felt like it's been about to explode for days. Pregnant too so can't take anything except paracetamol which doesn't work. Tried olbas oil, steam, hot baths etc, they all help while you're doing them but not afterward.

The only thing I've found which helps is a hot compress (hot flannel) on my face. That and to keep drinking because if you get dehydrated the snot clings to the sinuses and you can't clear it at all (sorry for tmi!)

anniepanniepears · 23/03/2010 17:50

I use plantago a herbal remedy from
A Vougal I buy it in a health shop called Jan Defries in scotland you put 15 drops in a small glass of water and it works wonders you could google it I think that you can buy online

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/03/2010 19:44

not tried a neti pot, I sadly don't have one. can I rinse without?

I don't think its so much snot as swollen.

warm flannel feels nice but not helping. Hot bath was great til I got out.

plantago sounds very interesting for future suffering will look that one up.

could try chilli

JamesAGB - you poor thing. At least I can experiment with medicine! will take some otrivine before sleep but I've ended up hooked on it in the past so I am careful.

I do appreciate all the suggestions

I used to sit in bathroom with the shower on full heat so room went really steamy. Much sympathy, have a lot of ENT probs and its not nice

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/03/2010 19:59

I have huge sympathy for you being a regular sufferer. normally annoying coughs are my thing so I suppose this makes a change!

OP posts:
Megglevache · 23/03/2010 20:02

Oh you poor thing! Only started suffering with this nasty a few months ago so huge sympathies here.

So pleased I clicked to see all these remedies. Hope you feel better soon. I found that Boots own sinus tablets really did go a long way to relieving symptoms, for a little while.

Earthymama · 23/03/2010 20:25

Another Neti pot fan here, you can get little sachets of sinus rinse too.
It's disgusting but works.

Also try to avoid dairy hard though it is,

Much sympathy on your induction to the Sinus Club.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/03/2010 22:01

Sinus club? can I have my membership fees back?

hadn't occured to me to avoid dairy, which is daft as it used to make a difference with dds snottiness.

Meggle, hope one of the suggestions is helpful.

i used to take night nurse and drink warm whiskey. i have no idea whether it improved my sinuses, but at least it let me sleep and i had some relief from wanting to rip my face off...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/03/2010 22:15

why didn't I buy night nurse? that would have done it.

oh well, must try for sleep soon, not much last night, esp with puzzling revving car outside the house at 4:30am and dithering milkman at 5am (who I think was trying and failing to find the hot cross buns I'd ordered)

I realised I've not taken any meds since this morning and while it is a bit uncomfy and swollen feeling I CAN BREATHE!!!!

hope everyones sinus pain is gone today!

ive been ok so far this year but last year was awful.
What ive found is people who dont have/get sinus problems have no idea how much pain it can cause. I keep getting told to take a painkiller and shut up moaning. Sometimes i just want to smash myself in the nose with a brick its so bad.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/03/2010 09:17

yuk for you two. not nice
mine is coming and going but gradually improving. Woke up with a nose bleed this morning (which combined with peak of af was quite a dispiriting way to wake up!)
