Hmm. If you have a block of butter than's about 8 oz, so the recipe is just over half that. A bag of flour or a bag of sugar is usually a pound, so 16 oz.

Go to food and ask 'how can I measure flour/sugar without scales?' I bet someone has a clever answer.

Or look up an American recipe where everything is in cups (they're about the size of a teacup, the sort that comes with a saucer, not a mug)

hellsbelles · 14/02/2010 13:07

WE've been distinctly unromantic in the Hells household. I'm ashamed to admit that stuffing ourselves with all that food yesterday (now that our bodies are such temples to healthy eating ) resulted in that lazy bloat tiredness thing. We both feel asleep in front of The Wire at 8.30?!?!? WTF? Woke to the closing credits and then couldn't get back to sleep for ages. Felt like such old fogies.

DH asked yesterday if we were 'doing Valentine cards' and I said yes of course...so he had to scuttle out and get one. But we were both so tired last night we didn't write in them. That's shite isn't it? Shall endeavor to do it later. DS managed to make us a card. He is far more romantic than the two of us put together.

SIL's new chap was typical Brummie (I think I"m allowed to say that without being accused of something...as I'm married to one). Cocky, confident and a bit of a cheeky chappie. Not really sure if he's nice or not. Tricky to tell under all that bravado. But fingers crossed as she deserves this to work.

iggi999 · 14/02/2010 13:42

Hullo. Hope you are all enjoying your sundays. I have done an hour's exercise (ya!) and eaten two Tunnocks teacakes (boo)
Have also just dropped laptop on floor. tis making funny noise.

mamazon · 14/02/2010 13:53

happy valentines ladies.
logging on assuming there would be no one here as you'll all be off being romantic and made to feel special by your loved ones.

I got up, put the roast in (pork) tidied up,did a load of washing, baked a cake with DD.

DP hasn't even said happy valentines no card, nuffin.

I had got him a card and made cakes with elvis (his fave) and happy valenties xx (his nickname that he loves but i never call him) and a silly cuddly toy thing

i've not bothered giving it to him cos quite frankly i can't be bothered. he doesn't "do" valentines.

well in 3 weeks time i wont be "doing" birthday's.

VinegarTits · 14/02/2010 13:57

aww mamazon, i would give it too him and make him feel really really bad about not getting you anything

TrillianAstra · 14/02/2010 14:01

Maybe h is (misguidedly) trying to give you a surprise, adn won't mention valentines until you do, upon which he will produce champagne and wonderful things?

I got DP a card but he didn't get me one - yesterday he said 'erm, were we getting cards?'. They are all rubbish anyway, all far too cheesy. I got him one that said 'from the cat'. We don't have a cat but I knwe he'd find it funny that they sell cards like that.

Can you explain how you made elvis cakes?

mamazon · 14/02/2010 14:17

he wouldn't feel guilty. he has always said he doesnt do valentines. whilst i can see what he is saying (he tells me he loves me every day so why buy a card simply because clinton have decided to sell them blah blah) he also knows that I do do valentines and im a bit annoyed that he couldn't just put himself out enough to get a card.

elvis cakes are just normal cupcakes with elvis pictures printed onto rice paper.
i ordered a sheet of them from ebay for about £3.

I know im being silly for getting so pissed about it. just hoped he would make the effort. i dont do golf but i have played it with him because i know he likes it. feels a bit like im not worthy of a 50p card!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 14/02/2010 14:20

I have been watching the Olympics with DD, she was a bit meh about the moguls and short track speed skating but would like to do the luge when she is 5.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 14/02/2010 14:23

Well I got a card, but forgot to get DP anything but he did have a lie in until 8.30 while I got DC's up and did there breakfast. We had a row and then did a family trip to B&Q and Tescos, he is currenty reading the paper while I am on the pooter and the chicken is in the overn.

TrillianAstra · 14/02/2010 14:23

So you knew he wasn't going to do anything, and have always known, and you're with him anyway, and he is in general pretty good. Is that right?

Yeah, I get annoyed about things irrationally too. It's not that he doesn't want to spend 50p, it's that he's decided on a principle (a slightly silly one IMO) and now if he did anything that would be going back on it.

Next year plan to do something that you enjoy without him. You know he won't have done anything special, so don't hope for it, plan around it.

DreamsInBinary · 14/02/2010 14:36

Have just been reading about the MN party. Anyone here been invited?

bellavita · 14/02/2010 14:46

Oh ffs...

DH has given me his i-pod touch to practice typing on - he has set up mumsnet on it for me. It is too bloody small. How on earth am I going to manage with my new i-phone? I have reverted back to my netbook.

Have been in town. DS2 went with DH to get his haircut and DS1 came with me (don't know why because he moaned at everything I looked at). We went into Browns Dept Store to look for something and I went through the make-up section en-route - found a fab eyeliner but it was £28 (was a Sisley one) I said maybe I could run to £20 quid but £28 - lovely girl said to me if I came back in half an hour and bought it she would give me some freebies. Think I will wait till London next week and see if Harvey Nicks/John lewis have anything. Cue DS1 moaning. We went to Office and they did not have any UGGS at all in my size, went back to Browns as I saw some really nice RocketDog boots - two different pairs and I thought I would treat myself - cue DS looking at the price and saying in full voice in the middle of the shop "Mum are you trying to bankrupt us and get us into debt?" Me getting rather mad at this particular point in time and said I worked very hard for my money and if I want to spend it I would. Needless to say they did not have my size either.

We went to Pizza Express for lunch, bless DH he was going through all the menu to see what would be the least calories for me. I settled on a tuna nicoise salad with the "light" dressing. It was bloody gorgeous. I had a diet coke instead of my usual large glass of rose.

FWIW for those of you who did not get valentines cards - I didn't either, never have apart from when DH and I were courting.

mamazon · 14/02/2010 15:02

Bella i think i would have given DS the death stare if that were me. £28 for some eyeliner i think my clinique one is a luxury and thats a tenner!

Trill - yea i have always known he doesn't do it, but i have told him a lot that i would like him to make the effort. honestly i never wanted the flowers and chocllates or big expensive presents - not that i'd refuse them.

I dunno. i know its very silly and totally though. i was single for a very long time and i guess that i just wanted what the rest of the coupled up girls got

TrillianAstra · 14/02/2010 15:07

Ah well if you have been asking then that's a bit different. You do get told that he loves you every day, I think you're doing a lot better than some of the other coupled up girls

I am romantically MNing while DP watches rugby and eats crisps.

Pizza Express is a lovely lunch Bella - I quite want to try the pizza with salad in the middle.

My eyeliners are no more than a fiver I think. I looked at the Benefit stand in Debenhams the other day but didn't really understand what anything was.

mamazon · 14/02/2010 15:11

i know. i shouldn't moan really. it just seems so silly that he can do that every day ( he even leaves post it notes with i love you written on, inside pages of work books he knows i will need to open) and yet on the day specifically designed to say i love you, he goes out of his way to make me feel shitty.

he got out of bed this morning without even giving me a kiss. he never does that. its like he wants to make a point and he wont stop till i get it.

oh well. guess i'lol just have to get over myself

bellavita · 14/02/2010 15:12

He is at that "age" Mamazon - he will be 13 in June . If I had of said to him shall we go to the O2 Store, he would have run all the way! If it doesn't concern I-Tunes, Laptops or I-Pod Touches, then he doesn't want to know.

I am going back into town tomorrow (will leave DS1 at home) although I have to take DS2 with me - he is 10 but if I left the both of them together then world war 3 would break out. I will get more of a chance to look around then. I saw a fab bomber type knitted jacket with long fur on it in the sale in French Connection and I would like to try it on - DS2 and I have made a pact, he can go in the Warhammer Shop for an hour and I will do what I need to do.

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 14/02/2010 15:12

morning....

TrillianAstra · 14/02/2010 15:14

Next year you should make your favourite cakes. Or even batter, the cakes that you rather like but don't make very often cos he doesn't like them.

There's no excuse for being less romantic than usual, that makes him just as much a victim of Hallmark as the people who spend £££ on red fluffy cards covered in glitter.

TrillianAstra · 14/02/2010 15:20

Batter? Well, yes, but I meant better.

Hi DEM. Not feeling well?

jaquelinehyde · 14/02/2010 15:22

Afternoon ladies I have been avoiding you all on here just nipping on and off sporadically because my diet has turned into a great big failure.

What is going on with me, someone please give me some good advice and some hard kicks up the ass.

Knowing my luck I will find the money to come to Manchester but will chicken out because my diet hasn't bloody started by then!

Today I have the headache from hell, nothing is touching it, and I didn't touch a drop of alcohol last night so I can't even blame that.

DP and I are ignoring Valentines day, we agreed a £10 limit at the start of the week, but when we realised we only had £35 in the bank for the next 2 weeks we decided to just do nothing.

To be honest the day has been lovely anyway, a lie in, DP made omelettes for lunch, and soon we are going to settle down to watch a film. The DCs have also been a real pleasure to be with today.

Just my headache to sort.

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 14/02/2010 15:22

erm... my head hurts. rather alot.

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 14/02/2010 15:24

...and i made a few interesting posts last night...one ironic one here

jaquelinehyde · 14/02/2010 15:29

Oooh a little hung over are we DEM. Would it upset you if I was to SHOUT!!

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 14/02/2010 15:34

shout if you like jaq, its not a headache but it is a lack of sleep followed but way too much sleep and dehydration headache. I am having a bed day. I think i might be heading for a fry up and orange juice. might make me feel slightly more human, plus i could detox with a bit of old south beach..

...you know you are old when you get a hangover type headache without drinking

YanknCock · 14/02/2010 15:36

We are in lurrve with the gym. DH really really liked it, now quite keen to join. I also showed my boobs to some rugby players (half the Warrington Wolves team seemed to be in the cafe next to me while I was feeding DS!).

Mamazon, your DP seems to be going out of his way NOT to be romantic today. I'm not big on buying lots of overpriced crap either, but a card doesn't seem like too much effort especially if you've been saying it would mean a lot to you.

We did cards this morning and both got silly ones. Mine nearly made DH spit out his tea. Clinton's does those On The Ceiling brand cards, the ones with the b/w 1950s photography with rude captions. I'm making a lasagne tonight, but will be hard to keep points down as Asda didn't have the reduced fat cheese I normally use.

bella at your DS!
