Has anyone ever BROKEN their TOE?

RTKangaMummy · 10/07/2005 17:46

.

I slipped in the bathroom this morning and my foot and toes banged really hard into wall

I was in agony

And couldn't bend them

Then they looked like they were swollen

Anyway now I have a beautiful shade of purple all over my toe

I still can't bend them

So if I have broken my toes and I went to A&E what would they do apart from Xray

So can I treat at home

I do not want to go to A & E

Do I leave it or do strap it up?

.

As it's so many toes I think you should go to A&E,I broke my little toe recently (on my ds carelessly discarded scooter!)and i treated it at home by strapping up and taking lots of painkillers.Took quite a wee while to mend and was swollen for ages,.Poor you,it's so painful isn't it?

redsky · 10/07/2005 17:55

I broke my little toe about 12 years ago. Went to A&e about 2 days later and all they did was strap it to the next toe. However I did not rest it as suggested and finished up with leg swollen up to the knee and off work for 2 weeks!!!

NotQuiteCockney · 10/07/2005 17:56

I've broken loads of toes. (all my own)

If it's the big one, then docs will do something, and it matters. If it's a little one (just one little one), it makes no difference.

If they haven't been able to get me x-rayed, they say, ok, if it still hurts after two weeks, it was broken. If it hurts, don't walk on it. They generally don't even bother taping it.

I'd do rest-ice-compress-elevate ... well, not sure about the compress, but certainly ice the toes, and elevate them, and try not to walk too much.

When I broke 2 toes, the gp just strapped them and gave me painkillers.

Trouble with A&E for a minor injury, is you could be sat there for eons.

Can you see your gp tomorrow, or a nurse at the practice?

RTKangaMummy · 10/07/2005 18:03

Yes the thing is I don't really want to spend the next 4 or 5 hours sitting in waiting room for them to say strap it up and keep elevated

I have just bent 4 of my toes by force with my hand IYSWIM

So it is the one next to my big toe that is purple and will not bend even if I wanted to which I don't {agony}

So if it was just one then I strap it next to the next door one

NotQuiteCockney · 10/07/2005 18:05

Yeah, strap it gently to the next smallest, and try out a range of shoes to see what's most comfortable. I wouldn't even bother with a GP for this, myself, as I've broken them so many times. (And you can not break a toe and have it hurt more than a broken toe, bizarrely.)

Please try to sleep with that foot raised, higher than your heart. Don't have the toe taped at night.

Puff · 10/07/2005 18:06

Tbh Kanga, I found the strapping more painful, and just wore some comfy socks and light shoes.

Go see your gp tomorrow though to have your foot checked.

It is yukky - how can something so small be so painful!!

RTKangaMummy · 10/07/2005 18:08

Thanks guys

I slipped and did this then went to a christening where I had to stand in church for quite a while {although I ended up sitting down}

Then I was round at friends for party doo and was sitting down there

It wasn't til I got home I saw the colour

I am on the bed atm

I was wearing my birkos this morning

I found it a bit hard driving if I used the toes on pedals so will use ball of foot tomorrow

Although DH can drive instead

Am in bare feet now with my leg on the bed IYSWIM

Will see how it is in morning can phone GP in morning for afternoon appointment tomorrow

I agree about the pain, I said some rahter naughty words when it happened this morning

Then had my other foots toes trodden on in church I was not a happy kanga {I didn't say any naughty words then though}

Make sure you take some painkillers before bedtime so you get some sleep.

RTKangaMummy · 10/07/2005 18:30

Hope it gets better soon Kanga .

broke 2 of mine at once, they went exactly as you describe, and i found it hard to wear anything but the most wide toed shoes fro about 6 weeks

a&e won't do anything apart from x ray, you just have to take it easy

hope it heals nicely

RTKangaMummy · 12/07/2005 22:31

Just thought I would give you all an update

It is NOT BROKEN

It does bend slightly

My toe is very very very purple and so is part of the top of my foot.

But at least it is not broken or don't think it is anyway.

OP posts:
RTKangaMummy · 12/07/2005 22:32

And it is still swollen

moondog · 12/07/2005 22:34

Glad it's good news kanga. I broke my little toe the night of Live Aid which was also my last day in boarding school.(In Denbigh actaulls,as we discussed the other night!) Ran down a corridor in glee at the thought of my impending freedom after seven years' incarceration and caught it on the edge of a trunk (we were very Mallory Towers )

Still bloody hurts.

RTKangaMummy · 12/07/2005 22:39

My goodness one way to have a momento of 13/7/85

Am sure it wouldn't be broken if it will move a little bit, would it???

OP posts:
moondog · 12/07/2005 22:41

Wouldn't think so.Doesn't mean it can't still hut like buggery though!

RTKangaMummy · 12/07/2005 22:47

Am getting sympathy from DH and DS

But yes does hurt when bend it but can be done

OP posts:
lou33 · 12/07/2005 22:53

i had a tiny bit of movement when mine were broken, but i mean tiny

RTKangaMummy · 12/07/2005 23:00

The top joint does move a bit BUT the 2nd one doesn't {bottom one}
