Help misdee and Peter - NOW

Hi all,

I am sure loads of you have followed misdee's posts about her dh, Peter, who needs a heart transplant urgently.

His op tomorrow will buy him some time, but a heart transplant will be needed very soon.

So many people have posted with love and hugs, asking what they could do to help etc. and misdee has previously mentioned carrying donor cards or going on the Organ Donor Register , but I'm sure many of you, like me, feel utterly powerless to assist in any other useful way at all.

Well....

Now there is something you can do.

Harefield Hospital is about 60 miles away from misdee's house and as she is still learning to drive, her folks or her sister, sparklymieow, give her a lift several times a week. The petrol for the trip costs about £10 for the return journey. As you can imagine, doing this every other day soon adds up. If you can, will you sponsor a journey to Harefield ?

Whilst misdee is away from her kids, she also needs baby sitting services, which also add to the cost of each visit. Any sum at all can be used to cover a baby sitter to give misdee a break so she can spend some time with Peter. Could you donate whatever it costs you to hire a babysitter for an hour ?

Peter is facing a pretty major operation tomorrow, and I thought it might be nice to show support by offloading some of this financial burden from misdee, just so life is that little bit easier IYSWIM. She has enough to handle without getting into debt to fund visits to the hospital.

I have run this by MN HQ who have been really supportive of the idea. If more money than needed comes in, misdee can donate it to the Heart Unit at Harefield Hospital, which is under threat of closure.

One of Peter's inspirations in this terrifying journey is a guy called John Fisher. He had his transplant on the 30th July 2000. You can read more at his site here . Accordingly, MN HQ will collect cheques made payable to S Williams until 30th July 2005:

Mumsnet misdee
PO Box 657
Ipswich
IP1 9AE

You can also make a contribution by paypal directly to misdee's paypal address which is djmisdee @ hotmail.nospam.com

(remove the spaces and the .nospam).

misdee, I hope you will allow everyone on MN who cares for you to help you out a little and we hope Peter's heart comes soon.

Please be generous lovely MNers, all of it will help.

Feel free to bump until 30th July !

Ring them up and pretend to be a pregnant one legged lesbian, who conceived via immaculate conception, they will be throwing money at you.

This is not just about a one off cheque to help out, they have removed Misdee's carer status with regard to the DLA, therefore Misdee and Peter are going to be down £240 a month

So if anyone out there is in a position to give a little extra please do so.............

Many thanks

LGJ

Puff · 12/07/2005 12:36

misdee · 12/07/2005 12:52

I havent lost my carers, peter has lost his money for paying for care (we were looking into getting a cleaner, gardener etc) with that money. i still get my CA for my kids (2 are on dla), but we are still down £242 a month. PITA. lookjs like i'll have to do houswork now

MrsGordonRamsay · 12/07/2005 13:40

Sorry

Got it wrong, but you are still down money.

Easy · 12/07/2005 13:44

Misdee,

I was saying that to dh the other day, that I bet you are finding it hard, cos they'll suspend Peter's dla while he's in hospital.

Check with social services tho love, there may be a grant or something you're entitled to to help.

mishmash · 17/07/2005 00:51

sparkly - how is Peter doing?

sparklymieow · 17/07/2005 11:41

I know that he had a clot on thursday, which was removed, and as far as I know he is ok. Misdee has taken the girls away for the weekend, trying to keep things normal.

sparklymieow · 17/07/2005 22:25

BUMP!!!!

misdee · 18/07/2005 16:06

hi

we're back. girls enjoyed the weekend away, wish i could say i did but just felt so guilty the whole time for not being at harefield. Peter had a funny turn saturday, it looks like his ICD may have gone off, but no-one could say whether it was connected or not, there is evidence it was disconnected during the op but none it was reconnected. if his ICD didnt go off then they dont know what happened. his legs started spasming, then her had an immense pain in his chest and arms. my thought is small heart attack, so we are hoping it is his ICD going off and shocking him cos at least then its doing its job.

will u[date more tomorrow when hopefully we get some concrete evidence on his ICD.
xx

Hi,
have jsut seen this thread. If Misdee is on Income support she can get a community care grant for travel costs to visit some one in hospital.

misdee · 18/07/2005 16:26

cori i have the forms here. but much will they pay? i'm looking at a 3month stetch of journies toitallking 60miles each time, for upto 7 days a week.

Easy · 18/07/2005 16:33

Misdee.

Glad you took the girls away love, My offer stands any time you want to take it up.

Your council may know of charities which can give you a grant in addition to benefits money to heelp with getting to/from hospital. See if your council has a 'welfare benefits rights advisor', who should know about private charitable grants as well as social services/income support type income.

cori · 18/07/2005 17:45

My advice is to apply for as much as you think you can get away with as they will always pay you less. Apply for £70.00 per each week for up to 6 months. (I think you can only get one grant every 6 months)
You dont know how long he will be in hospital do you?
Realistically I dont think they will pay this much but you should get a fare contribution towards it.
60 miles is a long way. What is the equivalent train fare?

misdee · 18/07/2005 20:37

a travel card, have to go into london and back out again to get to harefield.

Davros · 18/07/2005 22:24

Given up on Paypall, DH grunted his password between snores and it didn't work. Have written cheque and will post it tomorrow. Just hope it helps a little.

onlyjoking9329 · 19/07/2005 08:32
