I got news this morning that one of my friends died yesterday. She was in her very early 30's, two young children and everything to live for. Despite a mastectomy a couple of years ago, the cancer spread and she is gone. I can't tell you how dreadful I feel.

It is so important that we check our breasts regularly. It takes a few minutes and could save your life.
One of my best friends had a message just like this one, but it was face to face and by her boyfriends exgf who also had just had a mastectomy because of breast cancer. This message from such an unlikely messenger almost certainly saved my best friends life.

Pass the message on please ladies. Make sure your friends and family are nudged into remembering to check.

I would advise against looking at that rubbish -seriously.

solo · 11/01/2010 22:28

What exactly is your problem teatotal?
If you don't like the idea of looking after yourself for yourself, your Dp or even your Dc's then DON'T! but please go away from this thread and allow me to promote self checking and breast awareness. I don't want to hear of another death to bc when it can be caught early by the ownwer of the body so to speak and an early death A V O I D E D.

teatotal · 12/01/2010 13:16

Hi there, I can understand your comments, you remind me of me about twenty years ago when I was fund raising 'day and night' for BC. I am so sorry about the loss of your friend and mine too, also, anyone who may be suffering and children sadly left without a mum. My friend was vibrant, so kind and so caring. She found a pimple, went for early detection testing and everything else and we lost her within five years. I could relate many stories but not enough room. My step-father died in the 60's and we were told the answer is just around the corner! Seek and you shall find, you may have to dig deep. The following article is interesting. www.theforbiddenknowledge.com/hardtruth/cancer_business.htm

I really don't know why you persist in this teatotal - your posts make no sense at all

reallywoundup · 12/01/2010 13:44

teatotal how many times do you have to be told to FUCK OFF and get back under your bridge. Your views are not supported here and they are frankly dangerous.

Hi everyone!!!

solo · 12/01/2010 14:02

Hi reallywoundup. Great post!

KurriKurri · 12/01/2010 16:16

Well said RWU.

Cakesandale · 12/01/2010 17:34

Hi RWU, KK, MAS and uncle Tom Cobley and all.

I second that! Bugger off teatotal. I am sure you will come back sounding injured and telling us there is no need to be rude, but frankly, in your case, there is. You are dangerous.

Cakesandale · 13/01/2010 11:01

Has she gone? Hooray!

Sorry solo, I suppose the Uncle Tom thing sounded a bit rude - I just meant that there were a lot of us, all of a similar mind!

solo · 14/01/2010 00:21

I know! thanks for the support Cakesandale. Could do with more positive support on this thread. MAS is brill, but you are very welcome to join in here

MaryAnnSingleton · 14/01/2010 07:25

thank you solo - you're doing a great job !

Cakesandale · 14/01/2010 10:30

You know, my big gripe is that breast checking is bloody hard, not just for individuals themselves but also for doctors. Before my diagnosis I checked my boobs and failed to find my own lump, but felt something was wrong, the doctor checked and couldn't find anything either. Said I was fine! Thank God for the routine mammogram service, I say.

And just recently i went to the GP's because i had a pain under my OTHER armpit, asked for proper doctor not one of the myriad trainees our GP practice is infested blessed with, and the flipping bloke had a feel around, and then said "What do you think it is?" Eh? How do I know, surely my incompetence in that area is already proven?!!

I am not sure what the answer is, but I find all this pretty scary.

KurriKurri · 14/01/2010 11:47

It is hard isn't it. Like Cakes I couldn't feel my lump, and neither could my GP. But I had an inverted nipple, which is why I went to docs.

I think as well as feeling for lumps, its important to get to know what your breasts look like, how they hang, how they look side on etc. Worth standing in front of the mirror and getting to know what's right for your body.
I think people need to be encouraged to go with their instincts, any concerns at all - get them checked.

Cakesandale · 14/01/2010 12:26

Absolutely. The instinct thing is critical. And the look - mine went an odd shape (if anyone is interested )

But the surgeon could see it instantly - without even touching me. Hospitals are just a LOT better at this than GPs. So never be afraid to be pushy at the doctors if you are worried.

solo · 14/01/2010 14:26

Oh Cakes, I'm so sorry...

My friend(surviving)went when she found a lump; she had to see the nurse who told her it was a cyst. Friend mooched over it for two weeks, but something was niggling her so she went back, saw a Gp and went for a mammogram which detected a cyst and a second lump that couldn't be felt. Thank God for gut instinct.

Cakesandale · 14/01/2010 15:07

Good on her.

by the way, I was referring to the first lump, not to the recent discomfort - which no-one, not even the hospital can feel as a lump, or find any reason for at all. They think it may be more related to my arm injury of a few years ago. So don't go worrying about me just yet

I feel pretty good, considering. AND I have just been swimming (proud emoticon)

solo · 14/01/2010 17:11

Oooh! swimming. I used to love swimming, but it's the getting changed at either end that puts me off ~ I hate walking through the dirty changing/shower area's Ugh!
