I got news this morning that one of my friends died yesterday. She was in her very early 30's, two young children and everything to live for. Despite a mastectomy a couple of years ago, the cancer spread and she is gone. I can't tell you how dreadful I feel.

It is so important that we check our breasts regularly. It takes a few minutes and could save your life.
One of my best friends had a message just like this one, but it was face to face and by her boyfriends exgf who also had just had a mastectomy because of breast cancer. This message from such an unlikely messenger almost certainly saved my best friends life.

Pass the message on please ladies. Make sure your friends and family are nudged into remembering to check.

Does anyone know how old do you have to be to get breast screening in the UK? I have a family history (mother).

MaryAnnSingleton · 30/12/2009 21:02

all women are routinely offered breast screening every 3 yrs I believe after the age of 50, but if you have a family history of bc then it can be offered to you- think you'd need to see your GP to discuss

LynetteScavo · 30/12/2009 21:08

I was in Boots yesterday, and noticed they now sell a breast light up thingy - so you can actually see if there is a lump in your breast at home.

Not sure what it's called.

MaryAnnSingleton · 30/12/2009 21:10

There was a thread about these I believe on the Breast Cancer Care forum - not sure whether they're recommended or not - if I can find it will link to it.

FiveSoloRings · 30/12/2009 21:12

Ooooh! that sounds interesting!

here is the link to the discussion

Hmmm...it certainly sounds like a good idea, although no good if no lumps there, but then again, you can't 'feel' a lump that isn't there either, so I don't know how you'd really get around that unless your breast looked different somehow. Scary this whole cancer thing IMO/E.

Hi

Just wondering if anyone could share their experince as I am worried. For the past 5-6 weeks I have felt itching sensation in one nipple. I used hydrocortisone a couple of times but it comes back. I noticed that my nipple feels swollen and larger than the other one. I am also feeling bouts of pain in left breast. I am not breastfeeding. Trying to make an apt but the breast clinic is in a mess with apts due to the bad weather and cancellations. Has anyone experinced the same? I am not breast feeding. I have read the worst case scenario on google.

Sorry not for me, sometimes lumps and bumps are suppose to be there. Would rather take my chance. I am still so sad as I lost my 'bestest' ever friend who went for early detection screening for a pimple and anyone else who is suffering or lost a love one. Youtube has lots of second opinions just search 'breast cancer truths'. Dr Day dot com is another good site.

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/01/2010 18:59

sh77 - am so sorry you are so worried - I can't advise as I have experienced this - but you might find some sensible advice on the Breast Cancer Care Forum - I put a link to it further down this thread (for checking breasts).
teatotal - you are talking rubbish - taking your chances is ridiculously foolish - certainly breasts can have normal lumps and bumps, but anything which isn't usually there should be checked out.

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/01/2010 19:00

sh77 - obviously I meant to say that I haven't experienced this myself..

KurriKurri · 07/01/2010 19:59

sh77, I'm sorry you are feeling worried, can your GP do anything to speed up your referral, they usually try to be as quick as poss. with these things because they appreciate people's concerns.

Try not to google, I know its hard but for the moment just concentrate on finding out what the problem is.

MAS has linked you to a good site, and I was going to suggest that you start a fresh thread for your particular concerns and you may get more responses. Best of luck, I know its hard waiting for answers but try not to feel too anxious.

KurriKurri · 07/01/2010 20:07

Teatotal,I wanted to answer sh77 separately because she doesn't deserve her response to be cluttered up with people having to refute your claims.

Your advice is as usual dangerous rubbish. And even more incoherent than some of your other outpourings. As for your chum Dr Day, - I've never read such unmitigated nonsense.

Anyone seen LittleMontyontheDustyRoad? just wondered how her friend is doing.
Not sure if she's a namechanger as a search couldn't find her after the end of December.
