I got news this morning that one of my friends died yesterday. She was in her very early 30's, two young children and everything to live for. Despite a mastectomy a couple of years ago, the cancer spread and she is gone. I can't tell you how dreadful I feel.

It is so important that we check our breasts regularly. It takes a few minutes and could save your life.
One of my best friends had a message just like this one, but it was face to face and by her boyfriends exgf who also had just had a mastectomy because of breast cancer. This message from such an unlikely messenger almost certainly saved my best friends life.

Pass the message on please ladies. Make sure your friends and family are nudged into remembering to check.

Wonder how the appointment has gone?

wheelsonthebus · 24/02/2010 15:26

Just to butt in to say that my GP referred me to a breast clinic after finding a 'hard mass'. I hadn't felt a thing, though had recently been re-measured in a bra shop and found I needed a slightly bigger bra. The hospital aspirated a large cyst (sorry to be graphic - 44 millilitres of fluid!) and then I had a mammogram which was fine, and I thank God. Please don't always panic about lumps (I speak as someone who did...) but do get yourself checked, as the original mnetter says.

solo · 24/02/2010 16:46

Thanks wheels, I'm very glad you're fine panic of course helps no one in any situation, but is a normal reaction I guess.
I found a lump under my arm when I was 19/20 and went immediately to get it checked. Dr said it was an infected gland. Thank goodness for that, but I did worry for a while.

Amapoleon · 25/02/2010 09:44

Hola! Just to let you know that my appointment was rushed but positive. He thinks it's a benign lump and has referred me for a mammogram, thought I was getting that yesterday to be honest.

There is a wait of 2 to 3 months for a mammogram!!!!!!!!!!! So I am going to go privately. I know the doctor is a specialist but I would have rathered some more concrete evidence.

Hope everybody is well and happy today

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/02/2010 09:49

well that sounds like good news,am sure if there was any doubt they would have done a mammogram straight away - but if you go privately you won't have the waiting bit which is horrid. Lots of luck with that and lets us know how you get on

wheelsonthebus · 25/02/2010 12:41

2 to 3 months wait for a mammogram? That is ridiculous. I got one within 2.5 weeks (and it only took that long because I was away for a week). Where do you live? Could your doctor not make an appointment online with the hospital (saves the pointless letter posting and enables you to choose the date and time)

solo · 25/02/2010 13:54

Well, I'm glad that he feels it is good news, but all that waiting?!!!
BUPA is maybe a good thing to belong to...

Amapoleon · 25/02/2010 15:37

Thanks, I'm in Gibraltar and although they say that they follow the English System, they don't.

In my my mind I am 99 percent sure that he is right but I would like someone to see it just to be 100 percent.

solo · 25/02/2010 17:36

Well I'm not surprised you are going private. Do you have an appointment yet?

solo · 26/02/2010 16:10

Bump!

Amapoleon · 26/02/2010 21:37

I haven't got private health insurance, so I am looking into clinics. Hopefully will book an appointment next week.

solo · 26/02/2010 23:11

Good luck! hope you can get seen soon.

solo · 26/02/2010 23:12

Harumph! that was dire English!

I hope you are seen soon.
