I got news this morning that one of my friends died yesterday. She was in her very early 30's, two young children and everything to live for. Despite a mastectomy a couple of years ago, the cancer spread and she is gone. I can't tell you how dreadful I feel.

It is so important that we check our breasts regularly. It takes a few minutes and could save your life.
One of my best friends had a message just like this one, but it was face to face and by her boyfriends exgf who also had just had a mastectomy because of breast cancer. This message from such an unlikely messenger almost certainly saved my best friends life.

Pass the message on please ladies. Make sure your friends and family are nudged into remembering to check.

A week today until my appointment at the breast clinic. It's amazing the range of emotions that you go through when you don't know if there is anything wrong. Found out this week that my Aunt has breast cancer so fingers crossed for her.

solo · 18/02/2010 00:06

Oh goodness Amapoleon, I'm so sorry. I hope you both have the best outcome possible.x

MaryAnnSingleton · 18/02/2010 07:29

So sorry to hear about your aunt - please try not to worry about your own appointment too much - I do remember the agony of waiting-I only had to wait for 2 days but it was very hard. Will be thinking of you.

Amapoleon · 18/02/2010 09:18

Thank you, my aunt has been caught very early, so hopefully that is a good thing. I will have been waiting for about 8 weeks by the time my appointment comes. I was quite positive in the beginning but am finding it hard not to have black thoughts now. Hopefully all will be well and it will just be a kick up the bum and have made me value what I have got a bit more.

MaryAnnSingleton · 18/02/2010 12:38

hang on in there ! Remember, with regard to your aunt, that my bc was found early and my outcome has been good,so that might be a comfort. If you're worrying about the weeks you've been waiting, then I'm pretty sure that there is no harm done through the waiting. Do post if you feel wobbly and we'll endeavour to reassure

solo · 18/02/2010 13:21

Did you go private MAS? my best friend went privately with BUPA and had had tests and results within a few days and was having the tumour removed days after the results. I was very impressed with that.

Amapoleon · 18/02/2010 15:47

Thank you, you are all very kind.

solo · 18/02/2010 15:49

And here for you too

sandripples · 18/02/2010 17:07

I hope you have some distraction techniques Amapoleon, to help the time go. After the fist week of shock after my diagnosis I found distraction helped me with the waiting - whatever you enjoy doing.

I'm having a wait now which I'm finding tough too, for scans and to get started on next steps of treatment, so I tend to invite a friend every day, just for a walk or coffee or something as I am not fully fit post-operation. I've also cleaned a few bits of the house that don't normally get any attention!

Must go and do something useful now!

MaryAnnSingleton · 18/02/2010 17:56

hi sandripples -yes,that is good advice
solo - no,this was NHS - my surgery was about 3 weeks after diagnosis.

solo · 18/02/2010 18:33

Wow! That is very impressive MAS

MaryAnnSingleton · 18/02/2010 18:44

My aunty (55) has just finished chemo for BCancer and in the same week her daughter was diagnosed (28). It is so cruel. Apparntly we have a gene in our family called the brack 1 gene I think that affects the reproductive organs. Nan died of ovarian cancer now all this. We may all need to be checked. Its just awful, sympathies to anyone else in similar situation xxx

solo · 22/02/2010 15:31

I'm sorry to hear this shattered; cancer is all too common. My grandma died of it too and my Dad and friend last year and I know far too many people living with it. I'm glad you are in a position to be checked out. All the best.x

shatteredmumsrus · 22/02/2010 16:09
