Welcome to the latest in our series of healthy eating threads (26 and counting)!

The emphasis is on health (which is sometimes rude when we get chatting frivolously, as is our tendency), and weight loss where desired. I obviously don't desire it enough, as I am the same weight as when I started, but some of our regulars are mere shadows of their former selves ...

Do come and sign in here if you are with us, or want to join in- all welcome.

We try a variety of approaches, and there is always a lot of support and quite a few laughs along the way. Shiney is the head honcho round these parts, and we do get to be regaled with her embarrassing stories before the rest of MN, so that's always a big draw

Join us if you will!

at all the frivolity.

I must confess to having a 'soft spot' for bawdy cock talk on here. It is childish, immature and lowers the tone , which is it's appeal.

I don't do trollery of any kind. I doon't have time and thinks trolls are and wouldn't spot one if she were singing 'I am a troll foll-de-roll'.

I don't GET racism, or sexism, or homophobia or any such point of view. I understand how cultural differences arise, but personally think that allowing them to become inbred hatreds that get passed through generations is more immature and 'playground' like than some bawdy cock jokes. Cock jokes don't result in people dying that I am aware of, where as 'isms', 'ists' and phobias do.

Anyway...helloooooo!!

Good evening ladies. I have just been shopping and come home with two new size 10 trousers and a new coat, and some LS tops for DD4. Did I say my trousers were size 10?

I meal plan, fortnightly. Have veg and fruit come from riverford weekly and milk comes via the lovely milkman three times a week. I don't know about transforming my life - it makes the evenings less stressful as I don't have to think about what to cook each night - but it has certainly transformed our bank balance! I feed us all (2 adults, 3 children and a baby) for less than £100 each week. No extras

I am very smug about it, but only because I've put a lot of hard work into doing it - we used to be very, very crap with money and food, and be popping to the shops every night for extras.

I'm also very smug about my weight-loss - size 10! Did I tell you?

Newbies - you can do it. I've still got a stone to lose to my goal weight, but I'm at my goal size now and am delighted. Started at 11st 1lb and a size 14 and am now 9st 9lb and a size 10. I was running once or twice very week (but not been for ages ) and doing Food Focus until I learnt how large my portions needed to be and how many treats I could allow myself. I was losing about 2lb per week when I was running but now average 1/2 - 1lb each week, which suits me fine, so long as I'm losing I don't mind.

I need to get 'organised', you sound very efficient. And inspiring.

Does anyone use Abel and Cole? They have a very good deal for new customers at the moment - spend £15/week for 4 weeks and get £50 to spend.

FlamingoCock, tell me more about the meal planning and Riverford. We don't have Riverford, but a sister company - have used them before, but we go through loads and loads of fruit and we obviously did not get our favourites all of the time, so gave up on it. Now the meal planning for two weeks, how does this work? Do you do enough for two nights dinners on one night (then freeze the second portion for the following week? Can you list for me what you would cook? We spend loads on food and tbh, I don't buy loads of extras, although do tons of home baking.

Well, cockadoodledidnt, whoever you are, I shall tell you all about it. My trousers, that I have just bought, fit me perfectly and are, would you believe it, a size 10!

I am being totally honest though, when I say that I couldn't have done it without this fab thread - it really has been so helpful and supportive and encouraging.

And I am far from efficient - after having DD4 something wierd happened to me and I suddenly got on top of a lot of things. Before I had her, we lived out of ikea bags of clean clothes that DH had shoved in th machine in a frantic attempt to have clean shirts to wear to work; our kitchen was a death-trap of mankiness and, as I say, we never had any clue what we were eating from one day to the next and surivived (financially so) by just keeping our fingers crossed. I was very crap. Now I'm marginally better than crap but I do have a lot of help though - a husband who does half the work, if not more, whenever he's here. A mum who washes my sheets and towels and works really hard when she comes twice a week. And fantastic friends. I am certainly not super-mum - just very-lucky-mum!

Blimey! What has happened to me? Why am I talking like this? I've become horribly smug all of a sudden!

I do apologise!

Mits - love the name

Flamingo - You have done amazingly well and a bit of smuggery is necessary, plus it gives inspiration to the rest of us

Does anyone else think these are lovely?

Report
FlamingoCock · 27/10/2009 17:13

Cockavita. I freeze all the meat and defrost it the morning I need it (DH looks at calendar and gets it out the freezer before he goes to work). Everything else has long use-by-dates.

Oh yes, and we have a bread-machine so make our own bread. And chickens so our eggs cost us far less than they would if we bought them.

Our meals are not very exciting as the DDs are rather fussy:

Lasagne and other forms of mince with rice, or spaghetti
Sausages - either as a casserole or with mash
Stew - usually beef as the girls prefer it
Chicken - chicken basque (a sort of rice thing - I think it's a delia recipe), sweet and sour chicken, pesto chicken
Tuna pasta bake
Macaroni cheese with bacon in
Jacket potatoes
Chicken korma (made from scratch)
Homemade pizza and chips

Riverford - I'm so determined to save money that we do eat it all now, except not the veg always . The fruit all gets eaten - I'd consider getting two boxes as the girls get older and eat more of it. And I enjoy having different things each time. If I know I'm going to need something specific, I can go online and order extras if they're not going to be in the next week's box (Riverford tell you what's going to be in the box each week).

Cheesycock - thank you .

I have to say those baubles are not to my taste - we prefer baudy and colourful on our tree . But if I had a tastefully decorated 'themed' tree then I think they would look lovely
