Please get yourself down there

I know it isn't the most enjoyable or exciting 10 minutes of your life, but hey, once you do it then it 3 years before you have to do that 10 minutes again.

Don't put it off. Things get in the way, but just get it done.

I am speaking from bitter experience so humour me please.

Thank you

As you were

Please keep this bumped

Good job NSF, let's keep this one bumped...

Time2Hibernate · 21/10/2009 22:38

From several years of experience, the last one was ok. They now use plastic disposable things and are less cold and more comfy...if that sort of situation could ever be 'comfy'

Results were back in 10 days. Mind you that was pre postal strike.

Guad · 21/10/2009 22:47

I had a hysterectomy 18 months ago for stage 1 cervical cancer aged 30. It was a rare and more agressive type but caught early thanks to the smear test.

So get yourselves down there. The speculums are much better now anyway, even if it's a bit unconfortabe for a minute, it's so quick and saves lives.

I have a confession to make. It has been six years since my last smear after the birth of ds2. I KNOW I need to do it.

I should be okay with it. Had my first at 18 and then every two years until 30.

Am in Australia and they start you as soon as you have sex so 16 if you are having sex at 16.

I WILL do it before the end of this year.

I went in Feb after mass MN nagging. It was 10 years since my last one . It's a piece of cake so do it now!

MacaroonIncident · 22/10/2009 08:05

but have just had my THIRD retest. grr
always a crap smaple

CybilEngineer · 22/10/2009 08:11

They are putting it in the right place aren't they?

NormaStanleyFletcher · 22/10/2009 08:22

Well done Eyeballs.

Macaroon - I thought I would have to go back after this one as there was blood in the sample. Unfortunately, or rather fortunately, they found abnormal cells so I went for treatment yesterday. So glad I went, hopefully it has been caught in time

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 22/10/2009 08:30

I agree, you all must go regularly ladies, it's really not that bad.

I had cervical cancer 4 years ago. I may have saved myself an awful lot of trauma and heartache if I hadn't delayed having my smear when I fell pregnant with DS1. In the end I didn't have it one until after DS2 was born and then it was too late...

Even now I still have to have smears every year so you never get away from it.

chinchi · 22/10/2009 08:36

Just turned 25 so I went to enquire yesterday

No appointments left until November though, so need to phone back then

totallyawesome · 22/10/2009 08:47

Anyone who hasn't had one, should really get it sorted. If I hadn't have kept mine up-to-date, I might not be here because my smear picked up an aggressive form of malignancy. Now I get to go every 12months for the next 10 years (just been for 4th repeat, still all clear).

Seriously, if you've given birth, a smear test is NOTHING. Not even very undignified, comparatively speaking.

that's what I am afraid of.

I can live with the distant possibility that I might have something terrible, but if they actually told me I did, I would collapse mentally and just not be able to cope at all.

So I don't want to know until I am feeling stronger emotionally. My best friend has cancer and things like this have taken on terrifying significance lately...just can't face it.

Frrrightattendant · 22/10/2009 11:51

I know it's selfish but that's how I feel sorry

LadyOfTheFlowers · 22/10/2009 11:53

I am 26 and have never had one.
I have been sexually active for 11 yrs.

I have almost always been preg since I was 22 and MW always says wait till baby has come.

Am due in April.

Do worry about it tbh.

citronella · 22/10/2009 11:56

Me

Only because I just can't seem to make the time to go.

DawnAS · 22/10/2009 12:07

Definitely keep putting mine off. Gave birth 19 weeks ago and had nasty episiotomy and haven't even managed to BD yet...

Smears are always incredibly painful for me as I suffer cervical erosions so bleed aswell like a heavy AF!!

When I had to have the internal exams following induction of labour, they had to give me G&A as it was so painful...

Know I should go, but unless they could provide me with some G&A ( wonder if they would...) I am just too scared. Very difficult to relax when you KNOW that it's going to be incredibly painful!!

hormonalmum · 22/10/2009 12:08

Please go ladies. It's a bit unpleasant for a few minutes but it can save your life.

I have tried to keep my smears up to date but during and post children, I moved and had various other things that seemed more important than a smear.

After dc 2 I was queing up at the doctors and THANKFULLY a lady in front of me asked (loudly) about an appointment for a smear and I suddenly though, oh, i think I am due one. I booked one whilst I was there.

That smear I had caught some potentially dangerous changes - I had treatment and now on yearly smears. So that lovely lady in front of me at the docs I thank you.

Thank you NormaStanleyFletcher for hopefully having the same influence on a m'ner or two.

x

Flight - I understand, really I do.

I wish there were a way I could persuade you, because though you are probably fine, if there is any problem, the earlier it is detected the better.

But you know that.
