Hello. I'm here.

I expect everyone else is waiting with bated breath to hear what advice you need.

TrillianSlasher · 14/10/2009 13:33

Hi to Giraffe if I didn't say earlier (can't remember if I sad hi last night). I'd like to recommend the Lord Ford for counting of calories and balancing food against exercise.

Ooh, new job, exciting. What sort of hours? Will you be on masses less money?

Good question:
"What do you think I would find most difficult/challenging about this job?"

  • It reminds them that this is you checking out the job as well as them checking out you.
  • You get to respond and say why you would be good at the thing they think you would be less good at.

Afternoon all

Been for a quick swim this morning and Syc's leeky/mushroom toast for lunch. STILL at the same bloody weight - am bored now

VT - thanks for that. I will write it down now!

Trills - your hair does look lovely and good on your boss for noticing and complimenting you

Lizzy - there is a recipe on the recipe thread for paprika beef which has a dollop of creme fraiche on it and is lovely if you literally stir fry the beef for 2 mins so it is still rareish

Shiney - i think Bella is the one to help you here, but you can sell your organisation skills, logical thinking and commitment to getting a job done well. Perhaps best not mention your IT skills . You can ask about busy periods (admission time etc), any other duties (fire drills/childrens health issues/dealing with absenteeism etc?)

Welcome Pumpkin . Do you have a lovely pumpkin soup recipe to bring to the thread?

Congrats on the interview Slimey - I am currently interviewing at the moment so have that 'head' on.

My main gripe is that - I really really hate that people haven't been arsed to find out anything about our company (particularly as it's research/editorial role) and it's so easy to check on the internet. It just seems so lazy and not the sort of person I would want working with me. So, although I'm sure you already have, it's worth finding out as much about the school as you can.

For me the applicants/interviewees that have stood out and will get 2nd interviews are those that have found out as much as possible and then specifically matched their experience with what we are looking for. Your 13 years, is in my view, a major asset. Most employers hate the time they have to spend recruiting and want someone that is going to stay for the long term...so you have proof you are someone that doesn't flit from job to job (another of my bug bears...I have had so many CVs from people who do 6 months here, a year there??!! ).

Not sure what your old job was but you will need to have a good reason for why you are moving on (after 13 years) if it's not in the same industry...so prepare for that!

Can you tell us a bit more about the job? That would help with the any other questions....

Shiney - i suspect an IT test would mainly be typing and i guess you get quite a lot of practice on here . There will also probably be email + attachments and maybe a tiny bit of excel. I would hazard a guess that many people trying for this type of job may have been out of the workplace a fair while or older generations and therefore just not 'au fait' with technology, which you certainly are

Do you have anyone who could give you a dry run of an interview? You will feel like a bit of a plonker but it usually helps to say things out loud to make sure all your points come out coherently

slimey - they'll be lucky to get you then

I'm assuming they need great attention to detail, conscientiousness and good people skills all of which you'll have in abundance. I really wouldn't worry about the computer skills...if they ask about a software package you don't know about just say that you haven't used that specific one but are happy to learn

No one can be expected to have tried all systems (and many are bespoke anyway) so as long as you are willing they can't complain surely!

I think Trills question was really good "What do you think I would find most difficult/challenging about this job?". But possibly take it away from 'I' as you are almost asking them to find something wrong with you & the job with that question and may sow some seeds of doubt in their mind (!) ...and make it more general 'what do you think is the most challenging aspect of this job' (does that make sense?)

I'll try and think of other question as that deadly silence at the end of an interview can be horrible!

Right - I have to go back to my pile of over 500 cv's in a desperate attempt to find more people to interview...the ones from yesterday were so urghhhhhhh.

SazZaVoom · 14/10/2009 14:11

Quality of fingers not quantity is what is important

TrillianSlasher · 14/10/2009 14:15

Drinking water. Being good (ish).

TrillianSlasher · 14/10/2009 14:38

What hours would you be doing Shiney?

Is it a primary or secondary school?

TrillianSlasher · 14/10/2009 15:04

Is it your DD's school?

Lizzylou · 14/10/2009 15:46

Ooh, an interview, Shiney, v exciting!
I can email you some Interview tips/sample questions that we send out to candidates if you'd like Shiney?
It is pretty bog standard but good to get you thinking?

Let me know.

Am off to DS1's parents evening in a mo, not sure it will be too good as DS1 has asked if he will still get a treat "even if Mrs F says I have been a little bit naughty?"

Paprika beef sounds fab, thanks Sazz

jetonthedancefloor · 14/10/2009 16:56

hi guys -

Lizzy - hope Mrs F is kind

Shiney - congrats muchly on your interview!! I would follow everyone elses advice, as they are much better at it than me!! Other than that, just be yourself, and dont do as my friend did when asked why she wanted the job - "well, i dont really like kids but the hours are ok!""

And are you def cracking the whip now then

harleyd · 14/10/2009 17:04
