Anyone and everyone welcome, just so long as you're nice! We are not a clique and welcome newcomers, so please join us! But beware - this thread moves very fast - just leap right in

Shiney,my interview was really rushed as the school only found out that they had funding for the teaching assistants post the week before they broke up for the summer hols - the reception job is a job share post and it was one of the girls off there that got the TA's job. So, basically, the interviews were done in lots, two of us on my day, three the next and one on the last day of school. It was very very informal. We met in reception with the head of admin and she took us on a tour of the school and we asked questions as we went a long. That was it, took about an hour. I was not asked any personal questions whatsoever, suppose I was vetted by the agency and they wrote notes on my cv and faxed it over to the school. I am in a secondary school.

I did not see any governors, the head, any of the 3 deputy heads - nowt. But, I suppose they rushed us through the school keeping fingers crossed that the kids actually behaved for that hour..... Tis not a case of them offering me the permanent position after my trial period, it is more of a case that they hope I will stay! And of course, I do love it and won't be going anywhere...

Lizzylou · 14/10/2009 18:04

Have sent it, Shiney

Yep, just fix that air hostess smile!

The main thing they will ask you is why the big career change, but that is easily overcome and obvious really.
If you have an interview it means that your CV has shown that you can do the job, it's just showing them that you are the best candidate for the job on the day. Someone that they can work with and trust.

You will be great, am sure.

bellavita · 14/10/2009 18:08

So, I suppose they want to see how you interact with others then if you are having lunch with staff etc?

Will the children be coming to you if they need stuff or will you be shut away in an office somewhere?

My only interview advice shiney, would be to climb onto the table and burst into a rendition of 'I believe The Children Are Our Future', then, leaping gracefully down, glance at some of the other candidates and rubbing your chin, murmer... 'I just know I have seen your faces profiles somewhere before'

Lizzylou · 14/10/2009 18:32

Slime, there is only me and another bloke, it's a Ltd company and we're not making much money!

But, hey a fancy pants title is always nice and means if I ever go on a Game show I can sound a bit poncey

bellavita · 14/10/2009 18:38

I don't get to deal with many children (thank the lord) but I have to deal with parents and visitors.

I had a phonecall last Friday asking me to check on the system if their child was in school, as I was looking, the husband shouts from the background "has she sent a fucking pigeon to the classroom to find out?". I said to the woman "s'cuse me". The she starts arguing with the husband effing and really jeffing about how rude he was. Suffice to say, he did ring back and apologise to me an hour later.

Lizzylou · 14/10/2009 18:38

RE the lunch, just don't belch/eat with mouth open or talk about sex or poo.
Will be fine!
Just make small talk.

Shiney - I'm looking for an editorial/copywriter assistant - was expecting about 50 CV's but it's gone crazy.

4.5 hour interview - that is insane! Though I remember for my old company I used to take interviewees to the pub for the 3rd stage interview. That sorted out the wheat from the chaff! Probably illegal now

I think TMW has given the best advice so far - without a doubt. When you do that can you get someone to video for us?

VinegARGHHHtits · 14/10/2009 19:20

Congrats on your interview Shiney, just relax and be yourself, if there is anything you can't do, just be honest, and say i haven't done that before, but I learn very quickly, and use as much as you can from your current job as positives to why they should hire you, such as:

good communicator,
excellent time management,
ability to work autonomously,
excellent people skills

I imagine they want to see how well you get along with other people, hence the reason your interview is so long

Good luck!

VinegARGHHHtits · 14/10/2009 19:23

Tell them you have experience in riots and crowd control so home time will be no problem

bellavita · 14/10/2009 19:37

at VT

Shiney, when you get the job, how many hours would you be working?

BiteOfFun · 14/10/2009 19:49

Good point Vinny

You would be good at spotting bullshit dog-ate-my-homework excuses too

I am very impressed at you getting an interview, Shiney- I have merely slugged my way between couch and kitchen for days now, there is no way I could do application forms.

How is everyone then? Sorry to be awol this week, just a bit flat and not up to the cut and thrust of our thread while I'm so lethargic.

DevilsEnticeMadness · 14/10/2009 19:56

COngrats on the interview Shiney. Just one word of advice about Ofsted reports: they tell you nothing about the school. if you read the ofsted report for the school i am at you would form one opinion. It is like the report is of a diffferent school to the one i turn up to in the morning. The only thing that i found was anywhere near accurate was the section explaining about the pupils (ethnic minority proportion, free school meal proportion). The rest could have been a work of fiction.

Love the school but the kids are more like what i would expect from secondary kids (not like the previous school).

I think the reason why they have an interview panel so that all the people who are going to have to work with you closely can have the opportunity to form an opinion and input to the final decision. This can work to you advance as you are more likely to be considered as if one person does interview and they dislike you its a definet no go... (now rambling so am stopping)

DevilsEnticeMadness · 14/10/2009 19:57

at cut and thrust.
Been a lot of tumble weed in your absence

DevilsEnticeMadness · 14/10/2009 20:00

remembers why happy and ricochetes round thread yelling:

I got my target one shorts on today. a bit tight but can do up and sit in them.

Yipee! Yipee! Yipee!

!

hellsbelles · 14/10/2009 20:15

DEM - I can see it, there is no point hiding it - step away from the ice cream - otherwise the buttons on those shorts will pop right off

DevilsEnticeMadness · 14/10/2009 20:17

You are probably right

hellsbelles · 14/10/2009 20:22

But I bet those shorts looked so good and imagine how annoying it will be if they split when you sit down thanks to that midnight feast?!

SqueezyCheesyPumpkin · 14/10/2009 20:23

Evening ladies

I've lapsed on the thread, all out of sync with everyone I need to fit back in again, move over and make some room

I made a carrot soup which was fab, will post the recipe on the recipe thread.

Was anyone around last night and seen the shenanigans? Came back today and all the threads have gone.....

bellavita · 14/10/2009 20:29

shenanigans? do tell Squeezy.
