I am going in to hospital for a biopsy and will be having a general anaesthetic. I have told DH I might not wake up (is that possible) so just in case....

Wow, I didn't realise I had defied death until I read this. I have defied death thrice!! Mmmwwwah hhahahah I am invincible, right?

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 29/09/2009 13:24

It never occured to me to worry about not waking up from the GA. I had one pre-dc, and one when ds1 was 8m. My opinion was that I could choose not to undergo these procedures, and live in pain and discomfort from non-life-threatening conditions, or just get on with it and know that things could only be better afterwards. Which they were.

Personally, I refused the pre-op both times, but for the OP it might be better to take it, as it would relax her and remove some of the fear and worry.

You will be fine. Let dh be with you when you wake up, with a sports bottle of water for you to sip at, and a sick basin should you need it (I didn't). You'll probably do just what I did: say "Oh, hello." and go right back to sleep!

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 29/09/2009 13:36

Dh can't be with me as he will have to look after the kids.

OP posts:
PrettyCandles · 29/09/2009 13:42

Oh that's a shame. Are they not either old enough to wait in a waiting room, or young enough to be in buggy in the room with him (which is what dh did with ds1)? Could somebody else - family, friend - be with you?

PrettyCandles · 29/09/2009 13:44

Or somebody stay with the LOs? Even if you don't know many people (it was like that for me when pg with dc3, and worried about childcare when I would be labour), most playground mums would help out in such a situation.

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 29/09/2009 13:45

I don't want him bringing the kids as I don't know how long it will be before I can go home and don't want them hanging around. Once I am cleared to go home I will ring him and he will bring them then.

I feel your pain.

The last time I had GA, i was in the wee room getting the meds sorted out with the doctors, some totally inept tactless nurse wanders in and asks me for my next of kin details . I was so shocked. 1 of the docs stayed with me and tried to make light of it, the other went outstide and I like to think gave her a good talking to....

Good luck, hope everything goes ok.

stuffitllllama · 29/09/2009 15:17

Fab, hope all goes well tomorrow and you don't show anyone your bottom accidentally

Poledra · 29/09/2009 15:31

Fab, you'll be fine - I've had 2 GAs, both as emergencies, so I guess I don't know what it's like to anticipate it for days. I did have a rough few hours the second time as I knew they were going to operate and I had to wait for a theatre. I was 31 weeks pg with DD2 and had appendicitis. That was not an enjoyable part of my life. However, 3.5 years on, I am still here and so is DD2, out playing in the garden with her grandad at the mo'.

EccentricaGallumbits · 29/09/2009 15:48

What time is your doodah tomorrow fab? so i can send calming, living tyope vibes.

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 29/09/2009 16:02

I have to be there at 12.30 but won't go in until about 4.

expatinscotland · 29/09/2009 16:15

i've had several GAs and i've always woken up!

they've all been quite blissful.

it's a very, very restful sleep and when you wake it feels like no time has gone by at all but you feel all peaceful and sleepy and they just let you sleep and sleep.

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 29/09/2009 16:59

I hope they don't leave me too long as the kids can't go to bed until I am home.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 29/09/2009 18:48

Fab,I hate to say it, but if you're going in that late they might not let you go home until the next morning.

I had a short op at 5 but because of the GA they made me stay in overnight.

miamla · 29/09/2009 19:06

I had a ga yesterday (second in two weeks)

First one fine both before and after. I had a lovely experience

Second one, cried like a baby all the way to theatre.

I have no idea why my experiences were so different

PrettyCandles · 29/09/2009 19:21

Miamla, it might have been the pre-op. My mum reacts in that way to one of the pre-op drugs (a tranquiliser?), and because she knows about it she makes sure she never has it.

bigchris · 29/09/2009 19:22

good luck FBG, will be thinking of you tomo

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 29/09/2009 19:26

expat - the nurse said it will probably be 6-7pm before I can go home. It would be easier with the kids if I stayed overnight but I don't want too.

miamla · 29/09/2009 19:56

Prettycandles (love your name!) That would have been a good idea except I was a mess before the pre-op

MrsMerryHenry · 29/09/2009 21:12
