I am going in to hospital for a biopsy and will be having a general anaesthetic. I have told DH I might not wake up (is that possible) so just in case....

My mum has had millions of ops (ok a few) and these were proper big scary ops. She had a double lung transplant on Mothers Day (totally upstaging our gifts ) which lasted 8 hours and she was fine. AND because we all have low blood pressure its even more risky to have GA and she's fine.

You'll be fine, dude. But good to be prepared I guess!

Hope the biopsy goes ok...

Meglet · 27/09/2009 22:27

I've had 3 GA's and lived to tell the tale. 2 short ones for cervical biopsy and cell removal and the last one 2 months ago for a hysterectomy. Just watch out for constipation after the op as GA's & painkillers dry out the bowel and it can be pretty uncomfortable. Drink lots of water and don't pig out until everything is, ahem, moving again. Other than that enjoy the downtime, you will be fine.

In fact, I've had g-pigs who have survived GA's, if they can do it you don't need to worry.

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 27/09/2009 22:31

i wrote on our mirror "rememeber i love you always" on the day of my Op, so your not alone. But yep i woke up, could have done with more sleep tbh

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/09/2009 22:32

I have had 3 GAs and am still here to tell the tale. You will be fine

Meglet · 27/09/2009 22:36

oh, yes, I wrote my dc's a note before my op this summer. It wasn't needed

cheesesarnie · 27/09/2009 22:39

fab-youll be ok.im so unhealthy but i survived GA whilst having emcs.and dd survived after having teeth out.in fact she was up and raring to go before they even wheeled her into recovery

we heart you fab,so stop being a soppy arse and stop saying goodbye!

NormaStanleyFletcher · 27/09/2009 22:57

Last GA I had was for apendectomy. I was reaaaly blase about the whole thing (morphine), and when they came and gave me the talk "you may niot have the op you expect depending on what we find when we open you up, it may be something else bla bla", I said "well if that is the deal can I have a tummy tuck while you are down there?"

They said no.

The terrible thing was that DH was sent away from outside theatre to wait on the ward. They then brought me back to a different ward and didn't tell him. For. Over. 2. Hours,

He really did thing I was dead, poor love.

Good luck with it. You will be fine

BellaNoirisanAunty · 27/09/2009 23:03

Peppermints or peppermint tea really helped me with odd 'tapped wind' feeling you get afterwards.

If they offer you an anti-emetic then I would take it - I said no to it the first time they came round, post-op. Then I felt really nauseous a short while later and was v.v.glad when they brought it round.

I was also really scared and though I wouldn't wake up...am here now!

catinthehat2 · 27/09/2009 23:35

One technique which always raises a laugh among the nursing staff is to memorise the name of the anaesthetist when he unwisely lets his name badge get too close to your drug addled eyeballs. Then use it freqently in conversation pre and post op as if he is David Cassidy and you are 12 years old. It happened to me a friend of mine. The anaesthetist may however decide not to let you come round for various personal reasons however, so I would be a little wary on this one.

MrsMerryHenry · 27/09/2009 23:36

Aww, FabBaker, I'll miss you. Can I have your shoes?

Which ones, MrsMerry?

I have thought about writing the kids a note but have decided not too but I will leave a little one for DH. He has stood by me through so much and a little reminder of how much I love him is always good.

I have had 5 GAs and am still here.

Will they give you some valium to keep you calm before the op? They did that to me, just half a wee tablet and I was fine. Did not have it the first time and I was a bit upset (because of the reason for the GA, not the GA itself).

The second time, once I had been given the valium and was a bit relaxed, the anesthesist noticed that I was shivering and brought me a blanket. I had a slight massive crush on him. Hope I did not say anything inappropriate when I came around.

TrinityRhino · 28/09/2009 08:06

ok, stop it right now
I've had my fill of people dying this lifetime

I love you to bits so you cant die

OrmIrian · 28/09/2009 08:09

fab! Now I would say stop it and get a grip! But I can't cos I had a GA a few years ago and I was petrified. But it was OK and I am still here

GiraffesAndDucksSayQuack · 28/09/2009 08:13

I was terrified when I had mine in August. First thing I said when I came round was "Im not dead!!!!"

And even though after the op my heart went gaga I still wouldnt worry as much about it again because I saw how fast they were able to sort it and how many of them came running and all did specific jobs to help - so basically what Im trying to say is they know what they are doing.

You know what...I LOVED the after effects of the anesthetic - I felt so happy and chatty and giggly and was in no pain at all.

NaughtyAlice · 28/09/2009 08:30

Sod the GA, it's not being able to go for a wee afterwards that stresses me out! For 24hrs!!! (has happened both times i had GA, one of which when i was 20weeks pg)

Good luck, you'll be fine

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 28/09/2009 10:23

Sorry for being stupid TR. I think of you every day and hope you are okay.

I am feeling more confident now as you all say it will be fine and DH knows all your names if it isn't .

lol

silly sausage

MrsMerryHenry · 28/09/2009 15:33

Oooh, the Jimmy Choos, you know - that brand that apparently we're all meant to have in our wardrobes if we can afford to take out a second mortgage after paying for such mindless fripperies as childcare, accommodation and food.

So since you're popping your clogs this week, maybe I can have them for free? Let's call it payment for cheering you up (you did laugh at my post, right? Well there you go.)

Horton · 28/09/2009 16:58

I've got terrible asthma and have had three GAs and am still alive! I bet you'll be fine. In fact, I insist that you are fine. If you are not fine, since the shoes have gone I would like to put my name down for any nice jewellery you have.

Also, GAs are great. You go to sleep feeling really happy from the sleepy drugs and wake up all woozy and happy. It's the morphine. It's fabulous stuff. Make sure they give you morphine.

Do tell your anaesthetist that you are nervous. They can give you a sedative to make you feel calm and happy before they take you to theatre. Much nicer all round.

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 28/09/2009 18:27

I don't have any Jimmy Choos but recently I really want some very high high heels .

I have some fabulous boots and loads of gorgeous diamonds. .

I had an emergency GA 2 hours after eating my dinner (which they don't like!) and I was fine. And I was under for 10 hours too ...

You'll be ok.

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 28/09/2009 18:49

Oh heck. I forgot I can't eat.

I have taken off my nail polish and I can't wear any jewellery either.

Ponders · 28/09/2009 19:06

If it helps, I've had loads of GAs & always woken up afterwards (see? I'm here aren't I? ) but always felt like you beforehand.

I've another coming up this autumn & am wondering if I should tidy the house & tell DH how to access our finances...
