I am going in to hospital for a biopsy and will be having a general anaesthetic. I have told DH I might not wake up (is that possible) so just in case....

OP posts:
SmallScrewCap · 28/09/2009 19:12

I was terrified of having my first GA, but apparently (DH tells me) I went all smiley as I was going under and thanked the anaethestist, telling everyone who would listen "Ooh, this feels just like being back at university" (?!)

I was really upset beforehand to think that DH wasn't allowed in the recovery room, but it didn't matter in the end because I ended up telling the nurse how lovely she was, how much I loved her and thank you so much for waking me up so gently, how kind and sweet she was, how being a nurse was a lovely thing to be and the only job in the world that really mattered a damn... She was just taking my blood pressure and nodding distractedly...

My health was fine, but my twee saturation was critical

Good luck FabBakerGirl!

My 4 year old has had 10 GA's in the last 3 months. They are so thorough when they meet you before the op, dont be afraid to tell them your concerns. They can bring you back slowly or quickly, I would recommend slowly if they discuss it. You may feel a bit groggy and a sore throat so Ice cold water waiting for you with your family would go down well. (ice lollies my ds used to like, but I guess you r passed "Fab's"?)

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 28/09/2009 19:20

Never too old for a lolly.

I will be alone when I wake up as Dh will be at home with the kids. No one to have them.

I was under for about 9 hours. It was mighty weird waking up after that! It may help to take some arnica before your op. I'm sure everyone will be there as soon as they can!

bodeniites · 28/09/2009 19:32

before a ga i was given a pill to "take the edge off" and i was singing bananas in pyjamas all the way to the ot

StrictlyAvadaKedavra · 28/09/2009 19:35

Tha GA was fine, still here to tell the tale, didn't like the stuff they gave me to drink beforehand though, don't even know what it was but it was rank, after that kind of forgot how scared I was of the GA as was more counting down when I could get something to take away the taste of that stuff bleurgh!

Good luck FBG you WILL be fine.

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 28/09/2009 19:37

Now I am worried about making a show of myself!!!!

OP posts:
MiniMarmite · 28/09/2009 19:45

Like BecauseImworthIt I had an MMC so under for a very short amount of time. I scared the nurse because I came round so quickly and said "hello, is my blood pressure ok?", looked at the monitor and conceded "oh yes, that's not too bad" (like I'd really know)...but I'm definitely still here

and, sorry for hijack but really glad to see you on here TR x

MiniMarmite · 28/09/2009 19:46

pulled other thread, but worse has happend ..legal team took it on now [sad and upon their request police should i hear from them again

Winetimeisfinetime · 28/09/2009 20:39

My dh and I were once sat at a table full of anaethetists at a friend's wedding and they were saying that GAs are so safe these days that you are at far more risk on the car journey to the hospital, than from a GA, but you never worry about that as it is an everyday thing.

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 28/09/2009 20:39

Oh crap.

Have you got a new thread?

OP posts:
PinkChick · 28/09/2009 20:51

no, its got very specific now and much more serious ..so cant say too much on here??..but has got to the point when one more texts from them will result in police taking on harrasment case!

porgie · 28/09/2009 21:06

I am anaesthetic nurse, have seen hundreds of GA'S, had one myself and 2 spinals but if i had to go in tomorrow for one, they would have to strap me to the trolley and heavily sedate me.
I know they are safe, i know the anaesthetists are fantastic but it's stil bloody scary. Am sure most of my colleagues would be the same!
you will be fine ask the assistant to hold your hand and think of something nice before you go to sleep and thats what you will dream of. and make sure you milk it afterwards xxx

I love them. Love that whole, count down from 10, you get to about 8, all the tools sound like they are reverberating as they place them on the trays and then nothing. Then you wake up.

General, local, spinal. Is it too much to say I look forward to having one?

Happy Gas at the dentist when I was young, was what started me off!

You'll be fine, do all the prep you feel you need and then lie back and enjoy it, you'll be in safe hands.

I had one for cosmetic surgery so not 'technically' necessary! I was absolutely fine - no sickness, no sore throat or anything. Do you know I even quite enjoyed it. I was nervous as hell beforehand though! Good luck - you will be fine xx

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 29/09/2009 13:05

I feel sick today but having had something happen this morning I know it is the right thing to do as I need to know why it happens.

I will have hours to wait before I go in so I am packing a book and a couple of magazines.

Shame I can 't take my laptop.

OP posts:
fruitshootsandheaves · 29/09/2009 13:13

I had one last September
I was SO cold waiting to go into theatre that I was really shivering.
The anaethetist anesthetist person who puts you to sleep couldn't find a vein so said to me, oh I'll give you a little jab and then give you another once we're in there
Cue panicked look from me imagining being awake for first bit of op!!

But most of me is still here and I did like that woozy going to sleep feeling!
