Why am I having a period less than two weeks after the last one?

Any ideas? This hasn't happened to me before. I had a backache for a few days last week (happens quite often in the week pre-period) and have just started to bleed. Apart from the fact that I only had my last period less than two weeks ago, I'm also surprised because it wasn't preceded by PMT. I always get PMT - some months are worse than others, although the PMT I had a few weeks ago (before the period that started on the 8th) was monumental. It all seems odd.
Any ideas?

Yup, you're pregnant!

Seriously have you checked you aren't pregnant? That's the normal reason for odd bleeding a few weeks after a proper period. Otherwise you could be perimenopausal?

Doh! The 8th was nearly three weeks ago, not two. Anyhoo, I still wasn't expecting to come on until about the 5th or 6th of October, so it's still early.
I'm pretty sure I'm not pg - and I guess it would be too early to test, anyway. I think what's bothering me a little is just how bad the PMT was that I had before the period that started on the 8th, whereas not only is this one very early (which has never happened) but it was enirely PMT-less. Gah. Perhaps I'm, perimenopausal. Bit early though, I'd have thought (37)
I don't want to be pg or menopausal - hopefull someone will come along and say they had the same, weren't pg and didn't hit the menopause for years...

Have you lost weight recently, that can shunt your periods about and make them lighter/less painful?

Otherwise you are either about to be prunelike or round (may it be whichever will make you sob less)

I don't know sorry but this happened to me last month. One period ended on the 6th and the next began on the 19th. Twas bloomin' horrible.

Bumping for you to see if anybody else can help. Fwiw my next one was bang on time - exactly 4 weeks after the weird early one.

I've had the same - went through a stage last year (several months) of 2 periods a month.

So - the Dr reckoned causes were a)a uterine/cervical? infection - I had a smear, b) fibroids - I had a scan, internal and external or c) perimenopause. In my case they've ruled out a) and b) so that leaves me with c) - but I'm several years older than you, and actually since then it's settled down a bit (3 weeks rather than 2 between periods).

So go to your GP!

It can happen when you've had a failed implantation of course - you never really find out unless you actually do a pregnancy test at the time and get a positive (or your GP runs a blood tests which reveals it).

Deffo not lost weight (chance would be a fine thing).
hassled - I'll go and see the doc if it happens again. I'm sure there's just say it's one of those things, which tbh it probably is.
And I'll do a pg test in a week or so, especially if this period (or whatever it is) doesn't get heavier.
janeite - thanks for bumping. Periods are rubbish, aren't they? I was reading another thread on here about a dd who is really suffering. Reminded me of me at her age.
Failed implantation sounds interesting. Hmmm...

OK, so the "period" (what there was of it, it was very, very light) had finished by Monday lunchtime. It's now Wednesday and I'm feeling that something's not quite right. I'm rather emotional, but that might be because I've convinced myself that either I'm pg, perimenopausal or that I have a horrible illness. I also feel like my period proper is about to start, which made me think "phew, at least I'm not pg". Until I remembered from experience that that is exactly what v.early pg feels like
Soooo I will make a doc's appointment on Monday I think, to get myself checked out and perhaps to go on the Pill so (assuming that everything's OK and that this is just one of those things) I don't have to go through all this again (I am verrry worried).
If I am pg it won't be a total disaster but it would be very unplanned and would mean big changes our lives. I thought I'd left all that baby malarkey well behind, iyswim.
Anyway if I am pg when do people think it would be reasonable to test?

Mine have been about this frequency for a few years now - but I'm 45 and definitely perimenopausal.
Do the pg test asap to put your mind at rest and if its negative go get your hormone levels checked.

Thanks, Lady. Gah, I know I'm bleating on about this. I imagine it's too early for a pg test but I'm now obsessed. God I really feel now for all those ttc-ers and their two week wait.

Happens a lot to me but I am 44 and with me it's the menopause (well I think it is - GP can't find any sign of it but neither can she find any other reason for it).

Hey Otter, I have been through the same thing very recently.
My GP was lovely and very understanding - he did swabs, made sure my smear was up to date, blood tests etc.

I have been referred to a gynae consultant who have now made me an appointment for scans (internal / external) and a uterine biospy. I am 36 and was hoping for another child. But gynae consultant said that we would have discuss any further possible pregnancies following scans / biopsy.

Oh - should also say that they think it could be fibroids and that I will get the results of the scan on the day of my appointments.

OrmIrian I'm 44 too and had problems with irregular periods, I too thought it was the menopause. Then I discovered Agnus Cactus and since taking it I haven't had a problem, my periods are back to running like clockwork, always arriving and finishing on time. I highly recommend it to anyone having problems with their cycle.

i had this last month too really odd, also having some night sweats so am seeing dr next week. think it's just hormonal shite.

Thanks time I will give it a go. I've been like this for a few years and had blood tests for meno last Sept. Nothing doing although GP did say they aren't that reliable. I don't normally mind apart from the fact that I bloat like a balloon for a few days before each one - and when that is every 2 weeks it's a bit upsetting.

Agnus Cactus has sorted everything out for me OrmIrian, including the bloating, it really is brilliant. I don't get PMT as bad either. I can really sympathise with you because I was just the same, it seemed a never ending cycle of miserable bloating and bleeding.

For those of you with inter menstrual bleeding (or is it intra? anyway, bleeding between periods) regularly, please go and get checked out.

I also assumed it was perimenopausal and my GP was uninterested, but when I went for my smear the nurse looked panicked, got me referred to the gynaecologist who wrote "urgent" on all the notes and I'm now waiting to have a biopsy to find out if it's something nasty. (Without wishing to sound like a New Labour cheerleader, I was frightfully impressed that the gynae appointment was on Thursday and on Friday morning the clinic rang me to ask if I'd be available to do the biopsy next wednesday week - blimey, less than 2 weeks in between first specialist appointment and first test. How hospital referral has changed.)

I was going to post that I had this a few months ago - was checked out by GP and gynae with repeat smear, internal exam, swabs for infections, internal scan etc and cleared for fibroids, polyps, cervical problems etc and the gynae said it was common at my age (37) so I worried I was perimenopausal too. We had been trying to conceive our first for two years so was very upset at the thought. Then last Tuesday I got a BFP. So maybe not perimenopausal after all.

HerBeatitude I was going to make an appt with the Dr today - but ended up making one for ds as he's off school with a bad chest so didn't get to go for me. I am absolutley all for seeing your doc about this kind of thing. Without wishing to be melodramatic my mum was too embarassed to see her GP (about something else, mind, and we're talking months and months) and the result was not good.

Otter - if you are pregnant it will be fine - honestly. I had my third when I was 42 - total accident, huge gap, but she is an absolute treasure. 37 is no age - a mere spring chicken.
