Im on holiday with my parents staying in my aunts house while shes away.
Mum hasnt been right for about a week. She thinks she had/has swine flu but im not sure. The last 2 days I have barely seen her as she has been in bed. Dad has had to help her to the loo and she is saying it feels like someone has taken a sledge hammer to her head and she is also getting flashing in her eyes. She diabetic too.

We are stuck on IOW so nearest hospital is the mainland and a 30 min ferry ride.
help

I'd phone the out of hours GP to get advice, especially with her being diabetic.

LIZS · 12/08/2009 19:05

Is there a walk-in clinic more locally ? Is she eating and taking her usual medication normally.

madamy · 12/08/2009 19:06

How well controlled is her diabetes? Does she test her blood or urine and if so, have these reading been normal? How much longer aer you there for? I think I would err on the side of caution and at least try and contact someone to see her - would your Aunt's GP see her as a temporary patient?

lisad123 · 12/08/2009 19:07

they changed her meds before we left, she is eating ok. and we are ensuring liquids too.

im leaving on saturday and then my parents are staying another week. She doesnt control it too well tbh

LIZS · 12/08/2009 19:09

could it be a reaction to new meds ?

PerfectPrefect · 12/08/2009 19:09

I agree - phone an out of hours service for advice.

Do you have a walk in centre on the Isle of White?

madamy · 12/08/2009 19:09

Why did her meds get changed and was it quite soon before you left? If she doesn't have any way of testing her sugars, it may be that her diabetic control is not quite right and she really should see someone.

misdee · 12/08/2009 19:09

i thinkl she needs to be seen lisa. find out who the local out of hours is, and ask them to see her.

has she got her blood testing kit with her?

noddyholder · 12/08/2009 19:10

There is an A&E in Newport

madamy · 12/08/2009 19:11

I would phone your Aunt's GP in the morning and explain the situation. As I said, they should be able to see her as a temp patient - you can get emergency treatment for up to 14 days see here

madamy · 12/08/2009 19:13

..or phone now and the answerphone message should tell you how to contact ooh service.

NoGoodNicknamesLeft · 12/08/2009 19:13

if you think it's swine flu, you're not supposed to go to a gp's or a walk-in centre. call the flu service on 0800 1 513 100

they may redirect you to nhsdirect since there's underlying health issues.

hope she gets better soon

Nappyzoneisabeetrootrunner · 12/08/2009 19:14

there is an a and e in IOW

lisad123 · 12/08/2009 19:15

right just checked on her, forced her to check blood sugars, they are 22.5. I think thats way too high right?? She didnt take her meds after dinner and went straight to bed to lay down. Shes taken them now. Do i wait and see if meds kick in??

OP posts:
misdee · 12/08/2009 19:16

lisa get her seen tonight. 22.5 is way too high and she is risking a coma

andiem · 12/08/2009 19:18

it is too high I think she needs to be seen by someone
can you call out of hours service or go to a+e there is one on the isle of wight at St Marys hopsital

noddyholder · 12/08/2009 19:20

Definitely a and e!

SixtyFootDoll · 12/08/2009 19:20

ring NHS direct and they can direct you t OOH services

madamy · 12/08/2009 19:20

I am a nurse, 22.5 is very high, you need to get medical attention very quickly. Sorry to sound dramatic but it's true.

FishInMyHair · 12/08/2009 19:21

Go to StMary's in Newport. On the way from Newport to Cowes.
Don't bother messing around on the phone.

misdee · 12/08/2009 19:21

please take her lisa.

i know she will say your makiing a right old fuss but she needs to be seen.

madamy · 12/08/2009 19:25

She needs to go to A&E immediately as there is a high chance she could go into a diabetic coma overnight. Call an ambulance if she won't cooperate.

lisad123 · 12/08/2009 19:32

dad is upstairs watching her, i have called doctors, they are calling back.

lisad123 · 12/08/2009 19:33
