Anyone had a tonsil cyst removed?

I have a lovely white lump on my tonsil and the doctor has said that, whilst it will not turn into anything sinister, if it bothers me (which it does) I can get it removed.

I am considering it and wondered if anyone had any experience of the procedure.

If it's a tonsil nodule aka tonsil stone it can be pierced with a toothpick then really disgusting curdled cheese type stuff comes out of it.

Yeurck - I'll definitely let someone else do it for me then. GP just said it was a cyst.

A cyst would mean it's filled with fluid, I would think-so GP probably would drain that too. Maybe they are removed with lasers now-I don't know. I do know a lot about tonsil stones though as my, otherwise quite lovely, DD gets them regularly.

GP has said she'll refer me to ENT clinic, so I'm hoping it'll be a quick drain and away we go.

Of course I will tell DH that I require a day in bed to recover and lots of ice-cream and MN time.

Your poor DD - how old is she?

She'll be 20 this fall with tonsils the size of walnuts-no exaggeration.

Saw consultant today and he said it is a blocked mucous gland which has formed into a cyst and I'll hopefully be having an operation to remove it in a couple of weeks. He said that hopefully he won't have to remove my tonsil.

Has anyone had this done? How sore will it be afterwards? I forgot to ask.

I've had exactly the same as you previously.... and unfortunately I have the same again now on the other tonsil (have not yet booked the dr's appointment yet though).

Previously I've had a polyp on the roof of my mouth removed by an ENT surgeon (biopsy results benign) and a few years later a white cyst on my right tonsil. Mine also bothered me and was getting bigger so the ENT consultant said it'll need to be removed although he wasn't worried that it was malignent. I had to have the whole tonsil taken out at the grand old age of 32 yrs old as the roots were apparently embedded into the tonsil. Anyway, my operation wasn't completely successful as I as one of the unlucky ones who had a bleed following the operation but all was fixed with another theatre visit at 3am! They are quite rare though so don't let that bother you. Having 1 tonsil out is still painful - 2 weeks off work - lots of painkillers, operation under general etc.

Luckily the cyst was benign again. I'm currently pregnant so know that I'll need to wait now until the baby is born before I get the left one removed (if necessary) - don't worry about it though. The ENT consultant can pretty much detect a dodgy cyst and he's said yours is fine so its just a case of whipping it out!

I'm really not looking forward to it now it's getting closer. I'm still hoping that the whole tonsil won't have to be whipped out.

just saw your post. Can you please tell me what it’s like to have a tonsil cyst removed ie the procedure and pain. I’m terrified as don’t want a biopsy awake so are you asleep and did you have to stay in hospital. Thanks

I've got a cyst type thing on tonsil. Been fast tracked into ent because that's the thing to do if a new growth that isn't moving. It appeared during a cold and didn't go. Might be a blocked gland or something filled up. Anyway, im goingnto ent on Tuesday so will let you know what they suggest. It looks like it could go either way as in if its not bothering you they might just leave it, or need to get it out to biopsy it. I'll let you know. But no way could I tolerate being awake while someone pokes about lancing it.

Thanks for your reply. I’ve also been fast tracked to ENT just waiting for appointment. Mine doesn’t hurt at all it just a white lump on back of throat looked up cysts and mine looks like that. I definitely don’t want to be awake for biopsy as no way is a needle going in the back of throat just the thought of it makes me gag. Good luck at your appointment and yes please let me know what they say.

I will do. Yours sounds exactly the same. Mine was sore during the cold I had but isn't bothering me in the slightest. But I guess it's better to get it checked. My Dr said she didn't think it was anything sinister but had to follow her guidelines. I hope it can be left alone. I will check back in after appointment on Tuesday. Meanwhile I hope you get your appointment soon .

I hope your Dr is right and it’s nothing sinister. Hopefully we will both be told no removal necessary and that’s it but yes Dr has to get it checked as you just don’t know. I look forward to hearing from you as I’m worried sick that there want to remove it. Wishing you all the best for Tuesday.

I have 2 of these. No one seemed bothered about them so I've left them be.

Was you not sent to ENT to get them checked out ?

No. One of them is quite big too. They don't bother me, not causing any symptoms.

Mine isn’t bothering me either but waiting to see ENT I just hope they say leave it alone as don’t want it removed I’m to chicken.

any news yet and I was told I would be seeing ENT but just had a call from the hospital and it’s with maxilliofacial surgeon no idea what’s going on as was told ENT . Scaring me now that it’s cancer

As promised, here to let you know about ENT today. So he did have to give the cyst a prod with his finger. I did gag...yuk, sorry. Said it felt hard. Nothing to be worried about. If it grows and bothers me to go back. He did put the camera up my nose and down my throat. Nothing to worry about with that. Uncomfortable and won't make you gag as it's behind that reflex. No numbing stuff. He said it's disgusting. I did have infection down throat so he gave me a prescription and I'm discharged. So thankfully nothing sinister. Phew and don't worry! Let me know how you get on xx

Just saw your post re facial surgeon. They would have to look at it first surely? I don't think they have anything to do with tonsils do they? Have they made a mistake you think? I'd be ringing back and saying can you just explain to me why I'm not being seen at ENT and that you are worried. X

Thanks so much for letting me no glad your ok. I will gag to if he sticks his finger back of throat. I would not like the camera up my nose at all why do they do that if it’s on your tonsil. I’ve never wanted a tube up the nose. Did it feel weird being pushed up. I’m not sure I can do that at all. I hope I’m told to just keep an eye on it as well and glad you got through it ok. My appointment is on Tuesday they phoned today so dreading it now. My throat is fine not sore or anything. Really pleased for you and thank you for letting me no x

Yes I’m confused about seeing maxilliofacial surgeon to as was told ENT. When I questioned the person who phoned she said they do head and neck cancers but I will phone my surgery tomorrow and double check this. Please explain the nose camera as im freaking out about this . I just tried touching my lump and gagged so i hope he has small fingers . I’m just a very nervous person who has major panic attacks . When the dentist did an X-ray yesterday it made me gag and my eyes streamed with tears 😭. I think it’s cause I’m disabled and have no control I’m stuck where I am I can’t run away. I hate being lifted onto the chair or examination table not sure what they have and so wish I could stay in my wheelchair.

Yes, I was in the Head and Neck Clinic so maybe they all do diagnostics. I had a feeling it would be a camera going in but wasn't expecting him to prog it. Honestly though it wasn't major. You can get a numbing spray which does taste foul as I've had it before. The camera is literally just a pressure. Feels strange but it's tiny and quick. I'm pleased he did it because I had infection and bacteria in my throat. So he gave me a prescription for that. I didn't know it was there! Let me know how it goes. You will be fine xx
