Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Prettybird - which model of MBT did you buy? Problem is I reckon I need the sandals for summer and the full treking boot for winter...very expensive to get both (I'm in Austria so v.hot in summer & can be v.snowy in winter so trainer style not such a good compromise). Actually hadn't looked for sometime and didn't know they did a proper winter boot...I'm getting VERY tempted, especially as I do lots of off road walking with the dog and ds (2.8) in a jogging buggy but not much running at present. I sort of dream they will achieve the effects I could only otherwise get by lots of running (dream on I suspect). I want to buy some

mancmum · 07/06/2005 20:07

I have had a pair of MBTs for over 2 years and love them... you are forced to walk taller and with a better posture -- I find running in them a bit weird but as am a crap runner, think that is more my problem than the shoes... be interested to know how you get on with them...

Prettybird · 08/06/2005 09:23

I've just got the pretty red ones. I'm not (currently) planning on running in them - but I am using them during the day just to walk around (including walking to the shops etc).

The tingling you notice most when you are sitting down - maybe because that's when your body is doing nothing else.

I'm also hoping that they will help with my arches - the lady in the Herald that wrote about them commented that her yoga teacher noticed the positive effect it had on her arches and posture.

potty1 · 11/06/2005 12:14

Quiet here isn't it?

fionagib · 11/06/2005 22:34

that's cos everyone's out running...

am in a relay team tomorrow at edinburgh marathon (my bit's 4 miles, the shortest leg!)... will report back tomorrow.

How's everyone doing? Life's getting v bitty towards end of term (here in scotland our kids start their summer hols in 3 weeks time) with sports days, induction days etc.... so am gonna have to snatch some time to run.

Twink · 12/06/2005 16:26

How'd the relay go Fiona ?

I've been quiet because I've been secretly plotting to run a 10k race today. I've been worried about my speed as well as having problems in my head with keeping going so I didn't want to post beforehand in case it went pearshaped.

Delighted to say I was fine and finished in a new PB of 47:37 on a fairly tough course. So, I will now officially join Gizmo in the quest for sub-45.

Twink · 12/06/2005 16:34

OMG ! What have I said ??! That's sober too !

How are all the injuries progressing ?

Twink · 12/06/2005 16:35

Doh, just realised it was Potty's RFL today too. How did you get on Potty ?

fionagib · 12/06/2005 17:05

fantastic twink, I'm in awe!!! Hope your rfl went well too potty! Enjoyed edinburgh relay but my leg was about 3.5 miles (forgot my watch but think it took me 33 mins)and I do feel I need a longer run to get into the swing, also stupidly had had a brie sarnie at Costa about an hour before I ran, as there was tons of waiting around time & I was starving, so felt a wee bit pukey...

Was fun, tho, despite bursts of rain. Knee a bit cricky.

Have v v hilly 10k on thur eve, shall report...

Hiya - did fine , just 30 mins, OK considering I hardly got running in the first km. It was freezing though, really windy.

I definitely need to run further too Fiona, I don't get in my rhythm till at least 20 minutes.

Great time Twink - I'm searching for a 10k and will be aiming to break the hour.

It was our local half today too (the Potteries) - I sort of thought I might do it next year but the feeling lasted about 5 seconds when I saw the route - the whole of the last 2 miles is uphill!

fionagib · 12/06/2005 19:39

hills are good for the knees though aren't they??? I think someone said that on this thread...

Felt really inspired today seeing all those people coming over the edinburgh marathon finishing line. A half marathon would do me though, will be delighted if I can run the whole 13 mile course in sept. Hopefully starting with prettybird!

potty1 · 12/06/2005 22:49

The hills are your friends - that's what I was told today, and its been said to me before

fionagib · 13/06/2005 13:53

WHY are they our friends?!

Fab, well done Potty & Beety !

Not too sure about the hills = friends thing but I guess what goes up has to come down & I love downhills...

A number of places sell runners water bottles. Some have 'sports' tops but I find these from Sweatshop are better.

The biggest one is huge, and obviously is quite heavy when full. I use the medium one which is fine for anything up to half-marathons.

fionagib · 15/06/2005 22:32

Girls, can I ask tedious injury question please? have had running related pain at back of and around the left knee for couple of weeks now. Am meant to be doing (v hilly) 10k tomorrow eve in the village where I live. It does hurt a bit when I run. Am sure I need new running shoes but haven't had chance to get into edinburgh or glasgow to get some.

What is it do you think? Would it be okay to run with this bad knee or could I make it worse? Last thing I wanna do is bugger it uop and not be able to run for ages. It's only a wee local run, not a big deal if I don't do it. Thanks xxx

fionagib · 15/06/2005 22:34

ps intended to out and do a little 'test run' this eve but got home too late from dd's gym display.

Twink · 16/06/2005 17:27

Hmm, tricky one. Does it feel bad all the time you are running, get worse or wear off after a while ? Has it got any worse over the last couple of weeks ?

Can't give you an easy answer, go with your instinct but don't risk screwing yourself up, remember if you start you don't have to finish if it gets worse (yeah, yeah do as I say not as I do )

But get some new shoes asap.

fionagib · 16/06/2005 21:02

yes I will twink! New shoes are top of the list. Watched the race tonight going right past my house, wishing I was part of it!

fionagib · 16/06/2005 21:16

Calling prettybird!
Could you poss tell me the best place to get running shoes in glasgow? Will be in town for work on tue with a bit of time to spare, which could solve shoe problem... (I have bought shoes from Greaves in the past, by central station)
Thanks x

potty1 · 21/06/2005 13:56

Fiona - hope the knee is feeling a bit better.

I'm back doing the second in the 'swishy-swashy' series tonight - swore I wouldn't be going back but have been shamed into it by my overweight dh who finished in 24 minutes!

Wish me luck.

Sonnet · 21/06/2005 14:21

Could any of you "running proffessionals" please advise how I should start running. Would love to run outside as I hate teadmills.

Should I start off running and walking - or running straight off?. How far should I run and how often should I increase it?, How often should I run<
AND - will it make me loose weight?????

potty1 · 21/06/2005 17:38

Sonnet - I don't do treadmills either, nor running/walking as I find I can't get going again once I walk. But if you are a complete beginner then that's the best way to start.

Have a look at Runners world total beginners guide There's loads of useful info on the site.

Most important if you are going to go for it is to wear decent shoes.

Good luck and come back soon!
