Right - I am not googling my symptoms anymore as frightening myself! Have very swollen glands in my neck & it hurts when I swallow - what can it be?

Noticed a gland up at the back of my neck on Thursday but it wasn't causing me any bother, then yesterday afternoon I noticed a sore throat & the glands at the front of my throat were very swollen. It hurts when I swallow & feel like I am almost being choked. I would put it down to tonsils but I don't have any!
My DS has been unwell over the last few days but he apparently has an ear infection so doubt it's linked. Started googling but got frightened by most severe things it could be!

I feel a little achey too but no temperature

I can be a bit of a hypo when I start googling symptoms. Thanks, Posie, that was pretty reassuring!

Ear infections are often caused by a build up of fluids that become infected. So it is entirely possible that what ever viral thing has caused DS illness could be causing your sore throat.

Loads of colds going around at the moment. Rubbish.

But agree with posieparker, these things were traditionally called a Sore Throat, now they get given names like throat infection, tonsilitis, laryngitis, croup etc.

Thank you - I feel a lot more chilled after reading your posts! Not feeling too good so think I may take myself back to bed now as boys are with their dad today. If I still feel bad on Monday I will get myself to the doctors.

Dd1 once had the most enormous gland protruding out of her neck, whisked her down to the dr, can't remember if she needed antiobotics or not but it soon went away again. She's was very prone to tonsilitus at the time.

Yes belgo, DH had antibiotics this week for tonsilitis and he had his out in 1995.

How can you get tonsilitis if you don't have tonsils? Can you get appendicitis after your appendix is removed?

Seriously. Mine were taken out in childhood and I never had tonsilitis since.

The 'root' of your tonsils are not removed, this can still get infected (rarely) I have had tonsillitis since my tonsils went (well only according to my GP)

Oh Cote, men could get an infection in their ovaries if they thought someone would believe them!

It seems to be rather red in the space where my tonsils were removed but couldn't work out if it has always looked like that (don't tend to study my throat at length too often!) feel quite achey, weak & shivery too. Just about to have myself a Lemsip.
My house needs tidying but can't muster the energy atm!

If you feel weak thats your body telling you that you need to rest! Only do essentials and take care of yourself. Hope you feel better soon

Thanks. Had a sleep earlier, just before the boys came back, and felt rougher than ever when I got up. I am only doing essentials. My online shopping came & I could only manage to unpack the frozen & chilled stuff. The housework has gone to pot today!

Have noticed white spots either side of my throat where my tonsils used to be. Looks like I best take a trip to the doctors tomorrow.

The white spots mean tonsillitis I'm afraid. Antibiotics and bed rest for you!

Def sounds like tonsillitis - we've all had it here this week - DH is still in bed 5days on (). Bedrest, fluids, regular paracetamol and gargle aspiril if you have any in. Hope you get better soon

But I don't have tonsils! The spots are in the space that my tonsils were though & I have a temperature so if it really is possible to have tonsillitis without tonsils, I think that could be the answer. I feel really really rough.

Could be glandularfever too
