Pamina's dd2 in hospital with complications from e coli

She's only just two.
They don't know how she got it.
She's being transferred to a London teaching hospital tomorrow for further treatment as her poor little kidneys have been affected.
Everyone who knows Pamina on here and in RL will know she is being her usual awesomely calm self, despite being pregnant and no doubt very worried, but can we all think of them all tonight and over the weekend and hope that the Swiper is back on her feet soon? I think it would really help.
Thinking of you lots Pamina and family

Marina XXX

Latest bulletin is that after an awful Monday where the poor little thing had a six-hour nosebleed and needed emergency transfusions, she is really starting to turn the corner today.
They have a confirmed diagnosis of e coli (only strongly suspected until now) which means it's a public health issue too.
Thanks to all for continued good wishes. I will pass them on, as I think they can start having visitors again tomorrow.
H U S is a very nasty complication (usually from pneumonia rather than e coli) and if your child is unlucky enough to develop it, GET THEM TRANSFERRED TO A SPECIALIST PAEDIATRIC RENAL WARD.

Pamina - Hope things are starting to improve for your dd today. I have been thinking of you, it's very tough being in hospital for an extended period so I hope that you are looking after yourself (and the bump)too and are getting some support.

Thanks for updating us Marina.

Poor little poppet, how awful.

Thomcat · 11/05/2005 21:16

Oh no, poor poppet, hope she's much better, very quickly. love to you all, TC xx

Jampots · 11/05/2005 21:19

I remember years ago (I think the year we left school actually) HUS was about in abundance and think (please dont quote) it was linked to ice lollies - not entirely definite about this.

Hope Pamina's dd gets much better very soon and tell Pamina we are all thinking about them xxxx

BeachedWhale · 11/05/2005 21:35

Just wanted to send Pamina and her DD my best wishes for a speedy recovery. I am thinking of you and your family. Just wanted to send you a positive story about HUS. I suffered from HUS after the birth of my DT's and it is a very nasty and scary condition when it happens to you. I can imagine how very worried you must be about your DD. My kidneys failed when it happened to me but I just wanted to tell you that I made a full recovery and I'm left with no ill effects. The specialist renal people looking after her will work their magic. Your DD must be a very brave little girl as the treatment is very gruelling. Hope she has had a better day today.

PuffTheMagicDragon · 11/05/2005 22:09

Thank goodness there are signs of her improving.

Puff xx.

Hulababy · 11/05/2005 22:10

Cam · 12/05/2005 08:56

for the little one and Pamina, but relieved that things are looking up at last.

Public health issue is right Marina, wonder where the infection came from?

Please pass on my very best to Pamina xxxxxxxxxxxx

gggglimpopo · 12/05/2005 09:08

Thinking of you Pamina and wising your dd a speedy recovery

foxinsocks · 12/05/2005 10:54

how dreadful...poor pamina and family. Please pass on my best wishes. There is a UK support group for people with ecoli called HUSH . It may be of absolutely no use but just in case. I'm glad she seems to have found a good place to be treated - fingers crossed she keeps improving. xx

Bugsy2 · 12/05/2005 11:29

Don't know how I missed this. Best wishes to Pamina & her poor dd. Thanks for all the updates Marina. Sounds so awful, how does a little one (or anyone) get something like that?

dinosaur · 12/05/2005 11:33

Best wishes to Pamina's dd.

I remember watching a programme on television about a mother whose teenage son got e-coli - she left no stone unturned trying to track down how he had got it - it turned out it was from undercooked burgers at a scout camp, quite a few days before he actually became poorly.

Marina · 12/05/2005 20:10

Thanks to all for continued good wishes, I am passing them on by text - did not manage to speak to Pamina today, but we exchanged texts. Dd2 really does seem much better today, and for the first time the doctors are speaking of a possible discharge date at the weekend if the recovery continues
Thanks especially beachedwhale and foxinsocks for the positive story and the link, I'll make double sure Pamina doesn't miss them. To be honest, it has been hard to imagine that most people do recover well from HUS having seen how ill a previously strong and healthy toddler became.
The investigation will obviously have to check out their nursery (no other cases though) and home as well any other places they visited. An outing to a country fair is their suspected culprit.
Hopefully Pamina herself will fill you all in on that sometime next week...I am popping in to see them sometime tomorrow, son-with-virus permitting!
