I think i have PND.....

have docs appointment later on, will probably get given anti depressants.

does this mean i have to give up breastfeeding?

I think they can give you AD's that are okay to use when breast feeding

misdee , Im here if you wanna chat about it. Ive been down the Pnd road, not sure about the pills and breat feeding. I recognise that going out of mind feeling , Its horrid horrid.

Hiya sweetie - sorry to read this. No, it absolutely does not mean you have to give up breast-feeding. I had severe PND with ds1 and again with ds2 and I breast-fed both of them.

One word of warning: some GPs are reluctant to prescribe anti-d's when you are breast-feeding, though. With ds1 my GP didn't want to prescribe any of the newer ones so I ended up on an old style tricyclic which really didn't work well for me. By the time I had ds2 (2001) though my new GP was happy to prescibe Cipramil (a newer and, for me, more effective one). With Cipramil 'caution' is advised when breast-feeding (my GP told me to look out for upset tummies/drowsiness) but it is not contraindicated. Ds2 was absolutely fine, and so was I (eventually).

Best of luck at the doctor's - you have so much on your plate at the moment.

misdee, you have a hell of a lot on your plate, so try not to be too hard on yourself. I don't know much about depression personally except that a couple of weeks ago I went to my docs as I was feeling a bit down. I ended up chatting to him for 20 mins and concluded I wasn't depressed, just needed to do something for myself as I always bogged down in doing things for other people. It really helped just talking.

Don't know quite what point I'm trying to make, just wanted to bump this so someone who can offer you some proper advice can come along and help you more.

You're not losing your mind (though it can feel like it). I hope your GP is sympathetic and useful. Will come back later but ds2 being a pain.

dh says they may perscribed conselling and gymn membership/exercise at first.

had it with dd1 so know what it is this time. hater this feeling, feel like i'm in a dark pit and cant climb out by myself, the leadder is missing.

misdee, I think there are AD's that are compatible with breast feeding. Basically I think it comes down to what's more detrimental... the tablets or your depression.

I know what the 'losing my mind' feels like. I've been down that path with dd 3 years ago, and just entered it again with ds a little while ago. After 2 months of not being able to cope at all and just loosing it left right and centre I also went to see my GP who gave me Ad's on my request (as they had worked when I had it with dd). He also wondered whether I'd like councelling, which I'd love to have, as I have no family or many friends over here, so somebody to talk to would be great. So he referred me... the waiting time on the NHS is 6-8 MONTHS!
Thank god for mumsnet!!!

Hope the doc can help you. I'm on Paroxetin/Seroxat and it took about 2 weeks to kick in fully, but feeling much better now and getting myself back together. Obviously AD;s aren't the answer to everything, but they defo helped me to focus again.

Sorry to hear you are feeling low.

I have PND, and am taking AD's and have continued to breastfeed. My GP was very sympathetic as I had a number of reservations about taking tablet. I'm on Lustral which seem to be doing the trick. Tried to come off, too early in hindsight, so am back on.

I do hope you feel better soon.

Totally agree with QueenEagle, Misdee.

You do have alot on your plate atm and things are bound to feel bad.
I bet when you have a chat with your GP you'll feel a bit better.

its been getting the worse the last week. have felt ok till then. now its all too much.

the thing that got me through , was weekly hypnotherapy. Im also waiting for CBT , may be mention that at gp appt. CBT as the best chancs of preventing it occuring again, and can often be long term better than the pills.

Im so sorry you feel this way. I know how nyour feeling , you just want out of it.

Misdee, I am on ADs (an old-style one, dosulepin: Lustral did not agree with me) and still breastfeeding.
I wish you luck with the doc. I've been 'out' of that dark pit for more than 9 wks now and life looks so different.

had my appointment. GP was great. had a good old chat, me in tears, him being very sympathtic and then perscribed me some AD. (citrolpram?) says one a day, will have to find best time to take them.

I was on citalopram, I took them around 11am , they seem to makie you feel more active during the day and then more tired in the evenings.

hi misdee,
I am on citalopram. I have been taking it for about six months. I was diagnosed with PND around 9 months ago and like you i was very reluctant to take any medication due to me breastfeeding my DD. I also did'nt want to admit that i was depressed, but then my dad died 8 months ago and i just could'nt cope and had to do what was best for me and my family. I also see a CPN on a monthly basis which i find really beneficial. Both my parents are dead and i don't really have anyone to talk to. My DD is 19 months old and i'm still breastfeeding her and there has been no effects on her from my medication. I am feeling better than i did but still have quite low times, especially when i think about my dad.

I hope you start to feel better soon. You should certainly try talking to someone about how you feel, it really does help.

I'm not sure about the relationship with ADs and breast feeding so can't help there.
You have got so much to deal with at the moment Misdee - I'm amazed that you have coped as well as you have.
I'm taking Citilopram 40mg and they are definitely helping me. I was a bit reluctant at first to take ADs but I felt so low that I decided that I would try anything to get back on my feet, glad I have now. Been on them for nearly four months now and feel so different. Going for counselling too but only had one session so far, not sure if it is going to help or not.
If you think it's what you need to do don't hesitate. Hope you are feeling better in yourself soon. xxxxx

I thought I was suffering with PND too. Have been depressed pretty much since birth of DD2 (she is three and a half now). GP told me that it couldn't be PND after all this time and counseling is helping me to find what other causes their may be.

i feel like i have failed. i know i havent, but i feel i have.

i dont want to kill myself or hurt anyone else, just feel like i cant cope. these pills better work!!
