For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Yes Pointy, there are a lot of good new books about.

Oh, and Eva Ibbotson, not so very new, but I adore her books. Some of them excellent for 8yos. Are we considering any particular 8yo?

pointydog · 18/05/2009 22:34

yes, ibbotson good

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2009 22:35

which witch is a huge favourite of mine from childhood
what about diana wynne jones? charmed life is totally superb

pointy don't forget most of us routinely read children's books 20 or 30 years ago

OP posts:
TooTicky · 18/05/2009 22:39

These are excellent. Maybe not for an 8yo but I thoroughly enjoyed them.

TooTicky · 18/05/2009 22:40

Ooh, I love Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones.

pointydog · 18/05/2009 22:40

I think childrne's books have changed a l ot ov er the last 20/30 years. They have become pacier, less space given to description and setting. Very generally speaking, of course. But that change in style can appeal more to many children. So whereas old books are definitely still worth reading, I am often surprised when long lists of suggestions are posted with no newer (often no current) authors on them at all.

TooTicky · 18/05/2009 22:43

I think a lot of adults don't read children's books. I read far more children's books than adults' books, I think they have much more scope.

TooTicky · 18/05/2009 22:44

I am not a morpurgo fan.

Why did ruby come on and tell us about hercoil but not mention F&V?

And why did none of you help on my thread? I know you lot do UP

TooT, thinking of you x

SuperBunny · 19/05/2009 03:34

Interesting conversations at the Avi dinner table. We had a good one today. "Mummy, I was thinking about a dream I had and we went to the grocery store and Mr Topham Hat was there"

You'll be pleased to know that the grocery store he mention was the organic whole foods one. Very 10/10 is the Fat Controller. And, in our books, he has afternoon tea and cake.

TooTicky · 19/05/2009 07:23

Which thread SB?

Funeral day today. My mum thought there should be a cake, and my grandmother loved the green man so much....if anybody is about in the next half hour or so, could I trouble you for an opinion please? On my profile.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 19/05/2009 08:00

Toot, the cake is WONDERFUL. Your grandmother will be looking down on you all and admiring the love and care you put into the cake. I'll be thinking of you today xxx

littlerach · 19/05/2009 08:11

What's goign on with the time? Mumsnet has gone all funny.

Well, i have started the day with mwezzly instead of toast and marmalade and I will think about a carb free lunch, although I'm still not sure that's possible. Also I'm going out for lunch with friend, so depends if such a thing exists in the cafe.

I have toothache, but am in denial because I hate the dentist. I had a filling about a month ago and it's been really sore ever since.

Boco · 19/05/2009 10:21

See look, Molly wrote that message in the future!

Goodness me, veggering had fallen off my "Threads I'm on" [haribo].

Oh TooT, I'm so sorry my sweet, I hope today goes as well as it can for you ((()))

Lemur, a hug for you too, thank you for telling us about your ds1 (())

Am still v excited for SB

I liked a lot of your book list, but you need to add L. Frank Baum (Wizard of Oz etc) in order to completely encapsulate my childhood reading experience.

mollyroger · 19/05/2009 10:50

Franny! OMG! I did not know that...
I wanted to be Maddy so much.
