Neurologist appt next week...TERRIFIED...please give me some virtual support

Hi, I have 8 more days to wait until I see a neurologist. To say I am terrified is putting it extremely mildly. I noticed a weakness in the fine motor skills of my left hand a couple of years ago. But it only happened during certain tasks which I rarely perform (like tying knots in thread to hang the Christmas decorations up). In the last month, I have suddenly noticed a real inability to perform other fine motor tasks like doing up tiny buttons. My GP has referred me to neurology. Of course, I thought the worst and couldn't leave the google search button alone. I know, I know. But anyway, I have discovered that loss of motor neurons if never really a minor thing. I have self diagnosed a form of motor neuron disease. I know you are going to tell me that it's probably nothing, but the thing is, I know now that it can't be nothing. I am finding getting through the day almost impossible. DH and close friends are being incredibly supportive. I just want to see my DC grow up.

Good luck for Weds clarice.

They found that I have both carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome causing hand and arm problems but have never really had any explanation as to why I have problems with my feet and legs - have sort of assumed it's probably something similar to carpal tunnel. I get pins and needles in my face as well which is unexplained. Because they've ruled out things like MS and MND it has never been investigated further. I don't worry about it much now as I have had it for a long time although it is getting worse as I get older.

I find these neurological things very stressful so know what you must have been going through. Hopefully you will get your mind put at rest on Weds and will feel like a weight has been lifted from you.

I have nothing useful to add, but just wanted to say I'm thinking of you too.
Good luck

Wow, thanks so much for the best wishes. My appointment is in an hour. Just waiting for DH to come home and look after the DC. A friend is coming to pick me up. Everything crossed here, but feeling tentatively upbeat.

hoping you'll have had good news clarice...

claricebean · 10/06/2009 21:22

Oh thank you so much for your messages. GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Basically, the consultant said that it's nothing degenerative. He doesn't know what it actually is, but since it is not causing me any onerous physical problems just now they are just going to watch and wait. I have to go back in 6 months, or earlier if I notice any deterioration. The leg thing in the EMG results was fine, he said.

I cannot express how absolutely relieved I am. Looking back it just all seems so surreal. I was so convinced that was me - my life over; visions of the DC growing up motherless etc etc.

I will never ever self diagnose on the internet again.

Thank you all for your kind words. When I wrote my OP I just couldn't imagine I'd get to this day.
