Two bottles of wine a week is 30% over Govt alcohol guidelines for women - YIKES

I am slow on the uptake but I have just sat down and worked this out and now feel, well, almost tearful tbh.

I know its only guidelines and there must be some leeway but it has never truly hit home to me just how little alcohol is, apparently, too much .

Yes tis a bummer

Lovemyshoes · 05/04/2009 21:35

Oops, I had that, last night, the night before and the night before that AND 8+ pints today (been to a naming ceremony) and just opened my second bottle of wine now.

Lovemyshoes · 05/04/2009 21:36

I have no other pleasures, don't smoke, don't go out much, BUT, I like a drink and after tonight might not drink for weeks.

Ponders · 05/04/2009 21:36

It isn't even a guideline - somebody made it up

I wonder how many bottles of wine a week the average southern European woman drinks?

FairyMum · 05/04/2009 21:57

ahem...

Portoeufino · 05/04/2009 22:00

It's the Govt FGS. Ignore them like you do the rest of the time

MintyyAeroEgg · 05/04/2009 22:11

Did you have something to say FairyMum?

I wonder if the stress caused by guilt over drinking, say, 3 bottles of wine a week, is actually worse for you than the bloody booze itself?

OP posts:
marmitebabe · 06/04/2009 15:59

OMG !! How ghastly. But hell I hate this frigging govt so much I'll do what poroeufino says - just to spite them - so there.....na na na nana na

Is that right? I thought the guidelines were 21 units for women. Surely two bottles a week can't be 30% over that?

mrsmaidamess · 06/04/2009 16:09

Do you really need alcohol every night?

mrsmaidamess · 06/04/2009 16:09

Forgot to add

ProfYaffle · 06/04/2009 16:10

It's 14 units for a woman isn't it?

Kathyis6incheshigh · 06/04/2009 16:11

Here is an article about how the govt guidelines were made up.

Wine has got stronger over the last few years so there are indeed 9 or 10 units in many bottles instead of 6 or 7 as we used to be told. Owls - the (made-up, valueless) limit for women is 14 units not 21.

ProfYaffle · 06/04/2009 16:12

Do you mean consuming 2 bottles of wine yourself? ie not sharing? dh and I share 2 or 3 bottles over a week, I'm not sure how many units that is (think it varies between wines anyway doesn't it?) but it would be v depressing if that's over my limit, I thought I was being good.

Owls · 06/04/2009 16:14

Well it's supposed to be no more than two or three units a day for women so between 14 and 21 a week. Mind you, how many people actually bother to measure a unit anyway.

"Hello, would you like a unit of wine?" doesn't quite have the same welcoming ring to it does it.

ProYaffle - yes, I do mean two bottles of wine to oneself over the course of the week!

Its not very much really.

My natural inclination is to drink half a bottle of wine every night. Or 3 and a half in a week and more on a night out/special occasion.

I find it hard to accept .

Oh dear...

Ledodgy · 06/04/2009 18:36

2 bottles of wine is 12 normal sized glasses of wine so averaged out over a week that's less than 2 glasses a night so it's easily done.

solidgoldshaggingbunnies · 06/04/2009 18:37

DOn't accept it. It's utter bullshit. A couple of bottles of wine a week will not hurt you in the slightest.

traceybath · 06/04/2009 18:43

Very depressing article in the saturday times a couple of weeks ago saying that more than 1-2 units a week was particularly bad for women because of links to cancer especially breast.

I mean thats just one decent glass of shiraz.

traceybath · 06/04/2009 18:44

here's the very depressing article

pointydog · 06/04/2009 18:48

wine has a high alcoholic content so I'm not surprised. It's about 14% these days. Can't you water it down with soda or soemthing?

solidgoldshaggingbunnies · 06/04/2009 18:49

Traceybath: remember that almost everything you read in the papers about health risks is BULLSHIT and don't let it get you down. IF one glass of wine a week gave you breast cancer there would be no adult women alive.
