I'm a year overdue for it...hate having them done despite having delivered two children....I'm already getting nervous - what am I going to be like on Thursday morning when the dreaded deed has to be done? Help!

It's never as bad as you think it's going to be. 90% of the nurses doing it are quick and competent, and way beyond embarassment themselves. And it's only about a minute out of your life.

whispywhisp · 31/03/2009 11:32

Thanks...the last one I had was just after I had DD2....and it didn't bother me at all - guess its cos when you have babies all dignity goes anyway. This time round I'm soooo scared. I'm not going to cancel. I'm not going to cancel. I'm not going to cancel.

OP posts:
Habbibu · 31/03/2009 11:34

Don't cancel. It's important, it's never as bad as you think it's going to be. Plan something nice to look forward to afterwards - even if it's just going for coffee and a cake.

whispywhisp · 31/03/2009 11:40

Thanks Habbibu...it's typical for me to get worried about it now. My periods can be all over the place so its not been easy booking it plus the surgery have had so few appts available - I'm guessing lots of women have been going in for smears just lately - so I really do want to go - I only finished my period yesterday so I'm hoping that's ok too?

OP posts:
Habbibu · 31/03/2009 11:47

ring the practice nurse and ask about your period if you're worried, but I think it will be fine - it'll have been 2 days by the time you go.

whispywhisp · 31/03/2009 12:09

They said providing its atleast 14 days since the first day of your last period then that's fine. The fact my period dragged on for 10 days is neither here nor there. Typical sort of period due to the mini-pill that I'm on, unfortunately. Once I get this smear done and all ok with that I'm going to look at changing pills cos Cerazette really is a pain in the bum!

OP posts:
girlandboy · 31/03/2009 12:13

You'll be fine.

Had mine about 6 months ago, and they use a little brush now, so it doesn't even feel quite so "pokey".

A bit undignified, but so what. The nurse has seen many fanjo's!

whispywhisp · 31/03/2009 12:16

Thanks....the last one I remember hurt like hell - a metal tube thingy - really horrible. Shows how long ago I had one done if they've changed their utensils now!

OP posts:
girlandboy · 31/03/2009 12:17

The metal tube thingy (speculum) is now a plastic tube thingy.

whispywhisp · 31/03/2009 12:18

That's good then cos having something metal shoved 'up there' was yeuck....I've told DH if I go thru with this on Thursday he's to have the snip cos I want to come off the pill! So far....his response has been....'NO WAY!'....

MuppetsMuggle · 31/03/2009 12:21

I went for mine in Feb and was quick and nurse was wonderful. Results have shown abnormal cells again - so have to go for coloscopy (sp?) in May. I'm not to worried tho.

girlandboy · 31/03/2009 12:23

To be honest the only thing I worried about was if my ladygarden was looking a bit unkempt.

I would hate to look untidy.

Oh, and my dh says that no-one but him or me is going to get near his tackle. Looks like it could be me with the nail scissors then.

whispywhisp · 31/03/2009 12:25

Muppets...hope all goes ok for you in May. If I'm honest...having seen a celeb die of cervical cancer recently - because she ignored so many appts to go back following abnormal smears it scares me that that could so easily be me. I don't think I could bare the thought of not seeing my kids grow up, for example, hence why I MUST go on Thurs. I know its only for a few mins but the whole idea of having one done just scares me so much. I'm a complete flop when it comes to anything medical, especially for me...I really do need a kick up the backside sometimes.

OP posts:
whispywhisp · 31/03/2009 12:27

DH's immediate response re the snip was a resounding 'NO WAY..ABSOLUTELY NO WAY!' - yet us women go thru so much with having periods every month, having babies and...yes, smears. They don't know how damn lucky they are sometimes.

EyeballsintheSky · 31/03/2009 12:28

I had mine a few weeks back. It was 10 years overdue and the nurse was fine about it, but I got a bollocking on here!

It was fine, not as bad as I remembered and was over in a flash. Besides, DD screamed all the way through because she was stuck in her pushchair and not happy.

Got the all clear last week so I can out it beding me for another 10 3 years. It's good to be able to out it behind me.

You'll be fine.

EyeballsintheSky · 31/03/2009 12:29

WTF? That last sentence should say 'put it behind me'

MuppetsMuggle · 31/03/2009 12:31

Whispy - I'll be okay. As much as I hate going for them I do, mainly because of the history of cancer in my family. Also because we'd like another couple of kids, so want to make sure everything is okay down there.

The only thing I make sure of before I go is that my ladygarden is nice and neat lol.

whispywhisp · 31/03/2009 12:37

Yea I will have a 'trim' beforehand plus make sure the last thing I do before I go is have a shower...can't imagine going with it overgrown and, well, y'know...not clean!

Eyeballs...why did you leave it for 10yrs? I thought I'd left it too long with a year late...mind you they don't seem to send reminders anymore but the whole Jade thing made me remember that I was overdue. So easy to forget these things. Plus we don't get letters afterwards saying we've got the all clear or not and the last time I had one done the result had to be cleared by a GP first and that alone took days to be put thru. I hate waiting at the best of times but I'm guessing if there's a problem with it they'd soon let people know.

OP posts:
girlandboy · 31/03/2009 12:41

I always get a letter saying it's clear.

It came very quickly this time, about 3 weeks later.

whispywhisp · 31/03/2009 12:47

Right better log off - dog needs a walk before I go and pick kids up from school. Keep an eye on me girls and keep pushing me along for Thursday......thanks for all your replies....I will not cancel. I will not cancel..... xx

OP posts:
MargaretMountford · 31/03/2009 12:56

well done for booking and it'll be fine you'll see - I hate them too and get pathetically anxious but tell yourself that it will pass and it does...you'll feel so pleased with yourself afterwards - will be thinking of you

MuppetsMuggle · 31/03/2009 12:58

I've always had a letter coming straight from the Hospital to say whether all clear or not - not in this case LOL.

YOU WILL NOT CANCEL

whispywhisp · 31/03/2009 17:28

Well I've now had to bring my appt forward by 24hrs!!!

Got job interview for Thurs morn so rather than postpone my smear I've brought it forward to tomorrow....help!

OP posts:
