I'm a year overdue for it...hate having them done despite having delivered two children....I'm already getting nervous - what am I going to be like on Thursday morning when the dreaded deed has to be done? Help!

I had my first one today

It really wasn't as bad as I thought, I had a good old shave this morning, and a quick freshen with some baby wipes just before going in

Seriously took less than one minute, and was very slightly uncomfortable, but not really. Wasn't that bad.

Good luck

whispywhisp; "mind you they don't seem to send reminders anymore"

The call/recall office is supposed to do the follwing (f you're on normal recall)...
The call and recall system
sets the woman?s next test due date at the routine screening interval from
the most recent test. The woman will be included on a prior notfication
list (PNL) at the appropriate time (no more than 16 weeks before the test
due date).6 The invitation letter for routine screening is generated and
must be sent no more than 12 weeks before the test due date. 6
As a failsafe measure, the call and recall system generates the following
notifications if no test result is recorded on the system after a defined
number of weeks from the test due date. More detailed guidance on the
timing of notifications is given in NHSCSP Good Practice Guide No
2.7
If no test result is recorded, a reminder letter to the woman is
generated.

  1. If a test result is still not recorded, a first non-responder notification
(first non-responder card) to the woman?s GP is generated.
  1. If a test result is still not recorded, a second non-responder
notification (final non-responder card) to the woman?s GP is generated. This stage is optional.
  1. If a test result is still not recorded, another next test due date is set
at the routine screening interval from the previous test due date. The system continues to include the woman on the PNL at the appropriate interval and to send her an invitation letter for a test at the routine screening interval* until either: ? a test result is recorded for the woman (in which case the system is reset from the most recent test result date), or ? the woman becomes ineligible for screening in line with the guidance given in NHSCSP Good Practice Guide No 1.8 *The recommended screening intervals for the following age groups are: 25 years, first invitation; 25?49 years, three-yearly; 50?64 years, five-yearly.

HTH!

Give me a smear test over a check up, scale and polish at the dentists any day!!

whispywhisp · 01/04/2009 06:52

I'm now getting nervous....VERY nervous. God only knows why cos I've had them done before loads of times, had two babies, had loads of internals, a D&C etc etc.....I will go thru with it, I will go thru with it...!!!

OP posts:
MuppetsMuggle · 01/04/2009 08:23

You'll be fine, it'll be over before you know it.

nickschick · 01/04/2009 08:40

You will be fine,if its any consolation our nurse admitted to me she hates having hers done too.

She says shed rather do smears than any other practice nurse task.

She told me some bizarre tales of women with over grown fanjo hair that she prctically had to layer just to gain access.....

another woman who never wears knickers

a woman in her dhs underpants

and a woman whos dh suggested crotchless knickers so she wouldnt have to remove them to do the smear .

its a tiny 5 mins for a lot of peace of mind.

My friend hasnt had one for 8 years ...i told her id take her she said if she wont show the nurse her fanjo she sure as hell aint showing me lolol

nickschick · 01/04/2009 08:41

And an elderly lady with an 'unusual' piercing .....

MargaretMountford · 01/04/2009 10:36

how was it ?

whispywhisp · 01/04/2009 11:06

My appt is at 12.....

DH has been an arse this morning which isn't helping. Could really do without this today. Got job interview tomorrow which I'm getting worried about too. What next?

OP posts:
shirleyc · 01/04/2009 11:12

whispy you'll be fine honestly.
Just natter away with the nurse and before you know it, she'll say its all done.
My last smear test 4/5 weeks ago was so easy chatting away. Still waiting on results though

Good luck! you'll be on here wondering what you were worried about in an hour or so.

MargaretMountford · 01/04/2009 11:41

oh, sorry - well I'm thinking of you now - it'll be a piece of cake, you'll see

whispywhisp · 01/04/2009 12:23

Done! Phew!....

Was ok actually. Didn't hurt. The Nurse I had I knew from school but it was quite nice actually cos we chatted about our mates and families which helped pass the time!

Results take 8 weeks. I was actually 2yrs late - I thought it was only 1yr but my last one was in 2004 and I'm supposed to have them every 3yrs - I got a reminder last year so perhaps that's all they do now - send reminders when you're already a year late?

Anyway I'm soooo glad its all over. Can forget about it now! Thanks to everyone who helped get me there on this thread. Really did need the support. Thank you.

Now for a slice of cake and a cuppa!

OP posts:
MargaretMountford · 01/04/2009 12:26

yay ! well done whispy !! best of luck now with interview !

whispywhisp · 01/04/2009 12:31

Thank you MM!!! Yes, next is the interview...Should be ok - only going to work at the school my two girls go to and it'll mean working with some friends of mine which would be nice and a bit of extra cash!

I'm just so glad to have got that appt over with this morning. I don't know why I get so worried about it cos it wasn't really that bad. I just kept telling myself that these few mins could save my life etc etc.

OP posts:
MuppetsMuggle · 01/04/2009 12:33

WW - you are back. It wasn't that bad was it?

whispywhisp · 01/04/2009 12:34

MM...is it you that lives in Hants somewhere? I can remember when I looked at your profile pictures once before (gorgeous boy, btw) that you lived somewhere local to me? Was it Alton?

OP posts:
whispywhisp · 01/04/2009 12:35

Sorry...that last post was for Margaret....just in case Muppet thought it was for her!!

Yes I'm ok thanks Muppet. Have to wait 8wks. No, it wasn't that bad actually, although I'm glad its over and can, hopefully, forget about it for another 3yrs! To think when I next have to have it done (hopefully!) I'll be 45!

OP posts:
MuppetsMuggle · 01/04/2009 12:37

WW - I also live in Hampshire too. Portsmouth

8 weeks, we were told 4-6 weeks, and I had my results back in 3.

I'm on 6 monthly, so I'll still be 26 when I have my next one.

whispywhisp · 01/04/2009 12:41

Muppet...how come you have them 6mthly? Is it because you'd had problems before? So here's me getting worked up over having them every 3yrs and you have them every 6mths!

Pompee? Not far from me then. I'm in Andover.

OP posts:
MuppetsMuggle · 01/04/2009 12:47

I was yearly, now been moved to 6 monthly because of the new results, my GP is very focused, due to the history of the types of cancer in my family line.

whispywhisp · 01/04/2009 12:50

It's good isn't it that you are receiving the level of care that you are. You're so young too. Fingers crossed all goes well for you in May.

OP posts:
MuppetsMuggle · 01/04/2009 15:15

Thanks - I think the hospitals will be seeing more of me in next few months LOL. My GP is brilliant, would recommend to anyone. I think also he's known me since i was born, and was straight around the next day after DD was born.

whispywhisp · 01/04/2009 17:07

It's reassuring to have a good GP isn't it? My GP is lovely - after I had DD2 I had a dreadful time and spent quite a while in hospital - he made sure I had the best care possible - making phone calls rather than sticking on a waiting list or leaving me in A&E. Really kind guy. He's brilliant with the kids too. So many GP's these days are always glad to get you out the door and have little time for kids.

OP posts:
MuppetsMuggle · 01/04/2009 22:19

so true my DP old GP used to be like that, didn't have the time for him. So I made him move his care when he goes is so much better. Because of DD history with her chest, if theres a problem hes noted on her file to get her in immediately if i phone with a chest problem.
