Is there a tummy bug going around with the only or main symptom being really obnoxious farts?

Really, really bad farts. Worse than Guinness farts, much worse. DH was clearing the room with his farts on Sunday and Monday, but, you know, he's a man so I put it down to bad food and general annoying male-ness. But yesterday and today, rather embarassingly, I'm doing exactly the same farts. I know that it's not my diet or booze so I can't think what else it could be.

Is this the tummy bug that dares not speak it's name? People will admit to their family coming down with vomitting and diarrhea but I've never heard anyone say they've all come down with severe farting.

Being a woosy emetophobic I'd much, much rather suffer a farty bug than a tummy bug any day of the week. I just blame the dog if any noxious smell escape round here.

bran · 07/02/2009 19:14

I know, I find farting very funny too. My sense of humour is quite immature.

I'm fairly sure it's not anything I've eaten as I haven't eaten anything unusual recently and my diet is fairly healthy because I have diabetes and am trying to loose weight. I know what you mean about combinations though, I can eat scrambled eggs or baked beans with no effect, but if I have them together it's really explosive. I was assuming that DH had eaten or drunk something horrible that caused the farts, but my farts smell exactly the same as his and it's about 5 days apart so I was thinking it might be something bacterial.

Sorry but PMSL!

Do you have anything minty to hand, mint tea or delflatine? Rennies might help.

Or a gas mask

bran · 07/02/2009 19:25

I hadn't thought of mint tea, I'll make myself some now, thanks HF. I don't think deflatine would help as this wind is very far from being trapped, it's escaping quite freely. Hopefully I'll be fine tomorrow, it only lasted two days for DH.

yes yes yes. We ALL ( four) had it over xmas. Horrible eggy farts. GROSS. Could empty a football pitch with them. Lasted about 5 days. Good luck !

tumtumtetum · 07/02/2009 20:41

Ring NHS Direct and report your symptoms

bran · 07/02/2009 22:24

LOL at your memorable Christmas mousemole. I hope it does go soon, it's playing havoc with my love life. DH was just snuggling up last night when the worst happened. After lots of flapping the duvet around he decided to play it safe and rolled over to the other side of the bed and fell asleep.

Well if there is such a bug, dh has suffered from it for the best part of 20 years....

wilkos · 07/02/2009 22:28

if there is i have had it!

dear god the smell

SlightlyMadScotland · 07/02/2009 22:28

Yes. I have had it, along with DD3 (and I think my nose indiates possibly DP too). Ours was accompanied by slightly squirty bowel movements, but not enough to call it diarrhoea

mousemole · 07/02/2009 22:30

bran, I hope you are not eating bran as I dont think that will help ! I was almost sick at one of DH's farts when it was at its worst !

Nontoxic · 07/02/2009 22:31

My lovely DS (aged 8) has been doing this all evening. He hardly ever farts and they don't usually smell much, but tonight I nearly had to leave his room at bedtime - pure poison. He did say his tummy hurt a bit as well.

mrsmaidamess · 07/02/2009 22:31

Slightly, your post has made me lol.

'SlightlySquirtyMadScotland' shall be your new name.

Woooozle100 · 07/02/2009 22:33

yes what mousemole said. Alas I think poor dh has been damaged for life by this Or has just given him carte blanche to let rip more freely and frequently. Kids had eggy burps and farts for few days. We did all get sick / squitty after a couple of weeks but that may have been someat different

What about a nice scented candle? Tho is that going on dangerous house blowing up teritory?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/02/2009 22:45

I learned that the V&A museum is not the place to be when suffering from this!

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 07/02/2009 22:46

We've all got this at the moment. dd2 threw up one time but that's it. It's mainly the vile, vile farts (which lead to vile poo too). I have all day morning sickness too and this is sending me over the edge..

Woooozle100 · 07/02/2009 22:52

OhyouBadBadStinkyKitten indeed! Least you wouldn't have had people crowding round you when trying to look at stuff

Ugh Hangingbelly... what an unpleasant combination of abject matter

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/02/2009 22:54

it was amazing how quiet the place seemed

Lionstar · 07/02/2009 22:58

And I thought DD was the only one, we have been moaning about her farts all day long. She was sick a few days ago and was a bit runny for a day afterwards and since then, Dear God the Smell - something unholy for a toddler. DP reckoned something had crawled up there and died . She seems OK in herself though, eating fine. Like Hangingbellyofbabylon I'm trying to cope with this in the early stages of pregnancy

JacksmamasLittleBundleOfLOve · 08/02/2009 04:15

Yes, there is such a tummy bug, but it's restricted to my house on football game day.

nooka · 08/02/2009 06:01

Might be Giardia, if the smell is very eggy (really sulfurous) and you have the same smell burps too. Usually comes with fairly explosive diarrhea though., and I don't think is common in the UK (I had it in India)
www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dpd/parasites/Giardiasis/factsht_giardia.htm
Still I expect their are other similar type things. I think if you are pregnant ringing up NHS Direct might not be a foolish thing to do.

bran · 08/02/2009 09:46

I don't have burps and the farts are more rotting meat than sulphur so I don't think it's giardia.

LOL at Jacksmama, but this is a much worse smell, really.

I told DH about the V&A and he thought it was hilarious. I hope he managed to clench his bum in church when he had it last Sunday. Although it was probably good for the congregations souls to suffer for their faith.

I have no idea OP, but I shall share my best fart story:

My brother and his wife were fast asleep in bed. My brother farted in his sleep. It was so bad that the smell woke both him and my sister up [awe] [respect]. They were a bit confused for a while trying to work out what the smell was. Then they realised and have been delighting people with the story ever since .

HeadFairy · 08/02/2009 11:00

PMSL Alice. A friend of mine did a fart that was so loud it woke her up.
