dd has been vomiting all day....cant even keep fluids down HELP!!

dd is just getting over a cold and is still quite snotty so this morning when she vomited i thought oh its probably her way of getting the mucus up, she has continued throughout the day has vomited approx 6 times but each time there has been loadsa sick and has been projectile, the amount has become less but only because i havent let her eat anything since and there is nothing else in her stomach, she has been having drinks but vomiting them straight back up, getting quite worried now, she hasnt got a temp and seems ok in between being sick....any ideas?

any advice?

How old is she lilsmum? You're doing the right thing by not giving her food and preferably also not milk unless b/f which is meant to be easier to digest with tummy bugs. I'd just keep giving her sips of water, a sip every 10 mins or so so she won't dehydrate. You could also use one of those rehydration mixtures you can get at a chemist - might be called dioralyte.

It is called dioralyte. And as mummylonglegs says, sips may go down better. If you can't get any fluids down her by, say tonight, I'd be inclined to take her into the hospital or talk to NHS direct. Also (I think?) she shouldn't drink anything super cold, as that's more likely to come straight back up.

thanks guys, she will take fluids and seems very thirsty but it is coming pretty much straight back up again or at least within 10 mins

Make sure it is just a few sips at a time - use a straw if need be - or some one on another thread suggested ice cubes or lollies. If she takes a lot it probably will come straight back.

I think fluids can be absorbed pretty quickly, so even if it comes back up 10 minutes later, she's probably had some of it.

Is she still weeing? Amount/colour of wee is the easiest way to check for dehydration (also: sunken fontanelle, if she still has one, and sunken eyes).

A little bit of sugar in cool boiled water acts the same way as rehydration sachets which are flavoured and not all like the taste. Flat lemonade is also quite good a doctor told me. Hope your dd feels better soon.

onto nhs direct now....

just been onto nhs direct and they have said it will be 1 - 2 hrs before a nurse calls me back

she has just had a small sip of water and has brought it straight up again

she has had her nappy on since 11.30am and there is only i would say 1 wee in it, i have a no for emergency doctors surgery do you think i should just ring them?

Is that unusual, would you have normally had to change her by now ? dd could probably have gone that long without a wee anyway. Doe sher skin in the back of her hand spring back if you pinch it a little ?

How is she in between being sick - if alert and not in pain then she is probably ok but if she is getting upset and not settling then phone for advice, but they may just tell you to ber with it.

the sick is just water, every sip she is sick almost straight away

she is very floppy and lethargic too but i guess thats ecause shes weak, the nappy is unusual fot her

If she is really so out of sorts think you should ring.

Have you tried giving her just a teaspoon of fluid at a time?
When my nephew had this last year, he had to be kept in hospital as he became dehydrated. My sister had to give a teaspoon of dyralite every 5 minutes.

The floppy and lethargic thing sounds worrisome. I'd talk to the emergency doctor.

There is a shot they can give you to make you stop vomiting, I had it once, but I don't know that it's safe for little ones. (I was vomiting up bile at the time. Not nice.)

its such a shame she is really thirsty and cries when i take her drink away after a sip

i rang the emergency doc, and he pretty much fobbed me off, just give water so i guess will just have to see how she goes

If you are still worried and feel fobbed off take her to A&E.

If she's floppy and lethargic and you're worried, call the on call dr at your surgery.

i dont know what to do pinotmum, i dont want to overreact, i only have dd (1st child and all that) so i do tend to, prob just see how she goes, she hasnt been sick in the last half hour so (touch wood!!) maybe it is wearing off abit now

You can also get anti-vomiting drugs in suppository form - dd took them (actually half of one as she was 8 months old) when she had a bug and we had to fly, normally used for travel sickness.

Oh, is she taking the water in sips and still not throwing up? I certainly hope so, it all sounds very hard on you both!

How's she doing lilsmum? I agree with the others that you should check for signs of dehydration which are the worry with tummy bugs in little ones. Check her nappy to see if anything is coming out, even 1 wee is ok in a few hours. If it's totally dry after, say, 5 hours, and if she's not crying tears or her lips and mouth seem dry, I'd just take her to A&E so they can rehydrate her intravenously. These bugs can knock them for six I know.

Incidentally the last time I was in A&E with dd who had an asthma attack, there were 3 little kids there with tummy bugs, all looking incredibly ill - floppy, hot, etc. but with all of them the doc on duty sent them home with instructions to sip water / dioralyte and monitor. So basically I think the advice you've got here is more or less what you'd get at A&E.
