Sinusitis - advice?

redhotredhead · 17/11/2008 19:14

I have had acute sinusitis for the last 2 weeks following a particularly nasty cold. Blocked nose, headache, toothache, the works. Sounds trivial but feels awful. Have tried steam inhalations and sudafed but it's not shifting. Have seen a bit of green gunk come out but feels like lots more up there! When should you go to GP? Feel as though 95% likely to be told it's viral so not sure what the point is? What worked for you?

2 weeks? I'd go to GP, tbh.

Habbibu · 17/11/2008 19:18

And try ibuprofen to reduce inflammation in the sinuses.

candyfluff · 17/11/2008 19:19

had this i was really ill with it for ages i had anti biotics then a long course of beconase nasal spray in fact im stll using it as now if i dont i get the symptoms coming back mine was snot going down my throat and sinus pain headache .i say go to your gp to get checked out

Turniphead1 · 17/11/2008 19:48

I tell you what worked for me after 3 weeks of hell, GP visits, horrid drugs etc etc (and indeed I found out about it on the interweb)...

Sterimer. Tis nothing more than sterile salt water in a pressurised container with a nozzle that goes up the nose. Worked in a couple of days for me and touch wood not had it since (and that was 2 years ago and am very suseptible to sinusitis).

You can get it in any pharmacy. Best of luck.

southeatsastras · 17/11/2008 19:49

agree, neti pots are the best, but i just soaked salt water into cotton wool and snorted that while i waited for it.

Turniphead1 · 17/11/2008 19:50

The problem with Beconese and other nasal spray. etc is that of themselves they irritate the nasal passages and cause nasal drip (and so it becomes a catch 22 and ongoing problem). Same with Sudafed and so on.

southeatsastras · 17/11/2008 19:57

go to the gp too though

Bucharest · 17/11/2008 20:00

Can I ask which neti pot you have southeatsastras? I want to get my mum one for Christmas! (we're a very sinusy family)

southeatsastras · 17/11/2008 20:03

mine is just a cheapo plastic one from ebay. probably isn't the most attractive one to look at.

Bucharest · 17/11/2008 20:05

Thankyou! I've seen cheap ones and (seemingly) ridiculously expensive ones, I was just wondering if there's a difference, but I imagine not.... x

southeatsastras · 17/11/2008 20:08

this one

redhotredhead · 17/11/2008 20:09

i like aoutheastastras

the neti pot is great. had sinus problems for a year but i did have to get anti-biotics too when it was green

tiredsville · 17/11/2008 21:37

Redhot, go to Boots and buy the Sinurinse by NeilMed. I am an expert when it comes to sinuses. You will thank me for it.

tiredsville · 17/11/2008 21:39

Nnoo, don't do the Sterimar, get the Sinurinse. I have done both.

tiredsville · 17/11/2008 21:40

Oh and I've done netti pot....

southeatsastras · 17/11/2008 21:41

didn't you get on with it tiredsville?

redhotredhead · 17/11/2008 22:13

Have just looked at the sinurinse thing online - looks v similar to the neti thing in that you get the whole flow of solution from one nostril to other thing going on rather than just squirting something up your nose which is I think what seems to happen with the sterimar. Anyway buy one of them tomorrow and see what happens!

I use to get chronic sinusitis. Was on nasal steroids for many years. Then saw an ENT, as treatment he prescribed a six week course of antibiotics! No difference. Then suggested a sinus operation, but couldn't guarantee that the situation would improve. I also tried Sterimar (didn't really help much). Done the netti pot (was ok, but geting the solution right was difficult as my nose would sting, which would incur more inflammation). Bought books 'The Sinus Cure' still nothing. Tried Sinurinse, fantastic! The reason being, the quality and the amount of solution you wash your sinuses out with, is just right (8oz). It completely washes out the gunk. This is as far as I'm concerned, saved me from risking an operation.

redhotredhead · 17/11/2008 23:15

Thanks tiredsville - will take your advice. Does the gunk come out straight away?!

OP posts:
southeatsastras · 17/11/2008 23:17

it is hard to get the salt/water content right with a neti pot, too much salt can sting. takes a while to perfect

tiredsville · 18/11/2008 09:32

Straight away Redhot. Sounds disgusting, but the gunk is a wonderful thing to see, cos you are so happy it's no longer in your bloody head making you ill!

slim22 · 18/11/2008 09:39
