My PMT has got to such a level that it scares me. 2 days ago I told DH I wanted to leave, to live alone, I didn;'t want any of 'this' that we have.....My period arrived a week early today and its like switch has been flicked and I'm sane again.....I ...

I'm having a mirena coil in a few weeks that will hopefully help but if there any chnace that it could make my PMT worse I just cannot risk it.
All I feel is anger and sadness from the time OV (around day 8 of my cycle) until I get my period. It sounds extreme but its ruining my life...all of our lives TBH.

What else can I do?

Going to g.p at 11.30 will let you all know how i go.

ThemasterandmarGOREitas · 03/11/2008 13:10

So how did you get on LTH and Charlie? I'm not sure I could find an acupuncturist here Buda but will ask around. I looked for femarone today in our health food shop but no joy.

Is taking Prozac really the only cure? I just feel so strongly against taking such a drug, for myself that is, I certainly don't want to judge others who feel it worked for them.

Mine is definitely worse alternate months and I am pretty sure i am ovulating that month because I can feel it. Of course I could be ovulating the alternate month too, just not feeling it!

See under general health my new results thread

ladytophamhatt · 03/11/2008 17:27

Doctor was great, listened to all my symptoms, asked all the right questions and it was me that suggested fluoxetine before she did.

She said that that was exactly the right way to treat this level of PMT. The mirena could make things more erratcic so taking something else on top of that to prevent it just what she would suugest.

Shes prescribed me with 10mg of Citalopram, going to 20mg if I don't get to many side effects.
She said fluoxetine is usually prescribed but because I seem to have it constantly it was better to take this as it wouldhave a better result....

The pharamist read out a hige list of side effects which was abit worring but said after 14 or so day sthey would subside so it was important to carry on the tablets.

You'll have to all make sure I do take them because I'm terribale at not taking presrciption drugs as they shoudlbe taken and if these make me feel shit I'll almost definatly start to avoid them....

I'm pleased I've got something though, I just hope iot all works.

I am taking 5htp for this

will report back - have been taking for a month now, period due in 2 weeks, currently quite sane

Themasterandmargaritas · 03/11/2008 17:45

Enid what is 5htp?? Is citalopram an AD then?

wonderstuff · 03/11/2008 17:46

Hope the fluoxetine works for you. I have found that I can't take anything hormonal, I get very very depressed, my GP doesn't believe that the pill can make your PMT worse, but was a relief when I came off it. I have a friend who had awful temper for a couple of days before her period and she swore by eating really healthily little and often (every 2 hours iirc) for a week before her period, said it sorted out her mood swings completely.

ladytophamhatt · 03/11/2008 17:47

yes it is.

i wonder what enids 5HTP was too....

OP posts:
Buda · 03/11/2008 17:51

here

I have it actually but never remember to take it. Supposed to be good for lots of things.

ladytophamhatt · 03/11/2008 17:54

link doesn't work buda...

belcantwait · 03/11/2008 17:54

lth, this is what happens to me. stupidly i never recognise it. every time when i get it really bad i want dh to leave . it always blows up into some massive thing. its horrible. i completely sympathise with you.

Buda · 03/11/2008 17:59

Oops - sorry - just google 5htp - there is lots of info. It is an amino acid. Available from health food shops. Works on serotonin levels.

Themasterandmargaritas · 03/11/2008 18:02

I'm just not sure I want to take ADs. But I am getting desperate. Perhaps if I try this Femarone 17 and/or Enids magical concoction first and could we use you LTH as a guinea pig guide and encourage you to take your pills, you could feedback to us on your progress and if you think it is worth it?

ladytophamhatt · 03/11/2008 18:12

Until reacnetly I didn't wantto take anything either, but I just feel like I have to now.
I don't say it lightly that the final few days before my period arrives is a like psychosis. I knwo it sounds liek a huge exaggeration but its not. I would pick up on any commnet by anyone and blow it into massive proportions. I would say horrible things to DH and the children with such venom and woudl mean every single word of it.

Then my period woudl arrive and I'd cringe at all the thing I'd said and done, I'd be nice and calm but as soon as my period finished I'd OV again and its be right back on that mad road again.

If you want me to be you guinea pig tester, I'll give you daily updates.

Themasterandmargaritas · 03/11/2008 18:30

I am truly exactly the same. I told dh I wanted a divorce, that I couldn't carry on, I cried over some imaginary slight by a friend, I am so so stroppy with the children and have terrible road rage, but the minute my af arrives I am so relieved and instantly back to normal. You are being very brave doing something about it and it has spurred me into doing the same, it's not fair on dh or the dc to keep pretending it will go away.

I would love it if you kept us updated and we can support you during the first perhaps slightly irksome couple of weeks.

ladytophamhatt · 03/11/2008 18:36

Oh yes, road rage too...I'm probably a bit of a liability TBH!

Anyway I took the 1st one at about 5pm. Nothing to report yet....

OP posts:
ladytophamhatt · 03/11/2008 20:57

not sure if its my imagination but I do feel a bit odd ATM.

kind of hard to discribe but just about jittery in my head, not physically though.

Might be too early for any sympton to appear though....

OP posts:
chunglimum · 03/11/2008 21:14

Have you read "No more PMS" by Marion Stewart? It's excellent but to cut a long story short... it's about completely cutting out sugar, caffeine and alcohol, as some others have already mentioned. It saved my life and although it's tedious and you think, "I can't possibly do that', the difference just is worth it. I cheat sometimes but generally regret it afterwards! The case studies in the book sound similar to some of the situations some of you are describing.

Hope you all find the answers to your PMS and contraceptive dilemmas...

ladytophamhatt · 04/11/2008 06:44

HAd a weird nights sleep. Kind of fliting in and out of sleep.
One of the symptoms is innsomnia and it was like I was waiting for it to start keeping me awake.....really odd. I don't really feel tired so I think I did sleep but it wasn't soundly IYSWIM.

Then ds4 fell out of bed at 5:30am so I was awake properly then.

I have a banging headache now which always happens when I've had a bad night so it could be the tablets or the wierdy sleeping.

OP posts:
BiggestFirework · 04/11/2008 09:41

You can fiddle about with when you take your Fluoxetine so that if you gets symptoms of sickness, take it at night, if you find you have no nausea take it in the morning.

Good luck.

Themasterandmargaritas · 04/11/2008 10:27

LTH, do you think you are really feeling some side effects already or is it a question of knowing there are side effects and believing you have them? Either way 5.30 is an early start to the day. Poor ds4

How many do you have to take a day? Varying the times to find one that suits sounds like a good idea. Is it better to take them with food, for example?

ladytophamhatt · 04/11/2008 11:02

I absolutley think I kept waking up because the pharmaist said it could cause insommnia.
I just keep flicking awake and thinking "Oh is this innsomia"

Fruit-farkin-cake!!!

We both laughed about when I told DH.

I'm very aware that my mind will be looking out for symptons and making me think I'm getting them when I'm not so I need to keep that in check.

Headache has pretty much gone.

I do feel abit odd, but not in a bad way. I suspect it just me thinking about it too much.
The list of possible symptons is 20 miles long and aprt from the headache thsi morning i haven't had any others.

I took the second one at about 10:30am. I know I'l forget to take them if I take them in the afternoon.
I only have to take 1x10mg tablet atm, going upto 20mg after a few days so I don't think taking it earlier then 24 hours apart will hurt.

OP posts:
ladytophamhatt · 04/11/2008 17:58

Ok, definatley feel abit ditzy today.

Kind of like having a hangover on very little sleep. Also have a weird hungry but not wanting food feeling, hard to describe that one.

Otherwise Ok.

If I start to bore you, please tel me

OP posts:
FourArms · 04/11/2008 18:06

I was really scared when I first started taking AD's, but for me, the actual side-effects were very mild. I had slight nausea and giddiness, but no insomnia. So instead of taking the tablets in the morning as recommended (to reduce the possible insomnia side effects), I take them at night. If I forget, I just take them in the morning, but they're part of my routine now. I take a drink to bed, and take them with that.

Hope they help you. I started taking them for PND, but they've improved all aspects of my life in ways that I would never have imagined. PMT has gone out the window, day to day tempers are a thing of the past, my relationship with DH has improved immensely as I no longer get cross with him..... I almost feel sad that one day I'll have to stop taking them!

Themasterandmargaritas · 04/11/2008 19:39

No don't stop, you are not boring me yet Hopefully you will sleep better tonight. Now the burning question is, can you drink whilst taking them?
