For anyone who wants a boost to their general health (and to talk bobbins with a load of fruity nutters). The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Good morning.

Guad could you do me a favour and give me some of your recipes - just basically how to make them?

We have this arrangement that dp likes to do the cooking about 75% of the time. But it's just not working, so I've said NO MORE. He just doesn't concentrate. We have the most minimal and tiny meals. Last night we had fish - but so little it was a mouthful each, a desert spoon of mash, and about 4 small pieces of carrot each. I was STARVING - so were the girls, he said it was tough. I even woke up in the night hungry and angry. He doesn't want to give up the cooking because he likes to throw everyone out of the kitchen and drink wine and cook, but if he can't do it properly it's not fair on the rest of us. He has tiny appetite but that's up to him, I have a NORMAL one. He always does one vegetable, because he says we have to budget, but that's crap, we still need to eat.

Anyway, those ideas sounded good - I want to make some different things that I've not tried and menu plan and do it before he gets in each night.

berolina · 25/09/2008 09:50

morning all

'S'alright TooT, send it whenever you can manage Sympathy to people with money worries.

Boco oh dear. That really isn't on of dp.

oh Guad you are so right. I often think the opportunities I had at university were utterly wasted on my 18yo self and wish desperately I could go back. 'Tis not going to happen now - dh is doing his PhD and after that at some point psychotherapy training if when we can afford it. I have my doula course but that's all weekends. I might hand in my book as a second doctorate when it is done

berolina · 25/09/2008 09:52

Boco later on I can email you cheap nice meals we like? We are all good eaters, never fear

Boco · 25/09/2008 09:53

Thanks Bero that'd be very useful.

fullmoonfiend · 25/09/2008 10:39

er bero, can I have one too??

(

berolina · 25/09/2008 10:45

will do - probably this evening ss have to do kindergarten run soon. Have I got your email FMF? If not email me petrovafossil at gmx dot de

MamaG · 25/09/2008 10:52

Boco I'd hate that. I always feel upset and angry if I haven't had enough to eat [pig]

OsmosisBanana · 25/09/2008 12:52

fiddlesticks.

I just wrote a really long message and it went.

Thanks for helpful morale boosts am feeling much better today about it.

We had a proper meet with a few of the course tutors to talk about...

key skills - painfully dull and obvious but I suspect not aimed at me
reading
writing
the harvard referencing system

Cue 'Jaws' music

This particular beast I suspect was the real reason for me dropping out of uni 1st time round. Nothing to do with spending more time in the bar than anywhere else.

I have developed a particular dislike for the tutor who gave this talk.

a) he went on for 1.5 hours instead of his allocated 45 mins

b) he had hideous plaque build-up on his front teeth. I won't be sitting in the front row again.

Ok, maybe 2 year olds don't suck that much TooT, but they are vicious little tykes. Or mine is anyway. I still suspect English is not her first language.

cheap meals - the answer is thus - 3 bean chilli. And ginger, lime and chickpea curry. DD loves both. Lucky for her otherwise she would be a very hungry little girl!

I would happily eat those and nothing else for the most part of the week.

I wish DH would cook, but that is a beast of my own creation. I don't like him to be in my kitchen. When DH 'cooks' it generally involves baked beans.

Boco · 25/09/2008 13:02

They sound good oB, so, how do you make them? Am not a natural cook at all. I need instruction.

S1ur · 25/09/2008 15:34

Oooh I like this sharing meals idea.

Can we do a mass fruity email to each other.

I'll contribute one or two recipes.

We are on another budget week but I have... wait or it... really exciting fruit...

Bananas.

Woooh ppusing the boat out there

So I have had two bananas and some tomato salad.

So can we trade recipes? Especially those that are cheap and also include some kind of veg?

Boco · 25/09/2008 16:52

Well I am making my protest against dp's nouvelle cuisine and making beef stew and dumplings. Made with carrot, turnip, green beans, peppers, courgettes, onions, a bit of butternut squash - with side portion of fried leek and cabbage. So that's 9 vegetables, instead of his paltry 1. Am a vengeful vegger.

OsmosisBanana · 25/09/2008 17:10

Right

3 bean chilli

you can make this more expensive exciting by adding other items

basically

fry 2 medium onions, 2 cloves garlic until soft.

Add ground cumin, ground chilli according to preference (omit lots of chilli for kidz version)

fry till fragrant

add 3 tins of beans. I use kidney, haricot and black eye but have used all sorts of others.

Add 2 tins of chopped toms

squirt of tom puree

stock cube n water (just a bit for depth)

worc sauce (if you like, I tend not to bother)

bring to boil for a bit then simmer, could be 20 mins if everyone is loitering, could be 50 mins if some muppet has embarked on mission to bath child / go to shop / fuse entire house.

serve with grated cheddar in tacos with guacamole if feeling loaded.

Or on it's own with pitta triangles grilled.

Also chopped toms good and a bit of crisp iceberg.

half fat creme fraiche also v good served with.

I take the leftovers to work and nuke em on their own. But you can have with the whole shebang or bits n bobs. Whatever. Tesco also do v cheap plain tortilla chips which make it appealing to child folk.

am making the ginger / chilli / lime / chickpea concoction as we speak so will type later.

OsmosisBanana · 25/09/2008 17:18

I guess you could serve it with rice too, not a big rice fan.

Or jacket spud.

fullmoonfiend · 25/09/2008 18:30

my teeths are watering as my granny used to say..

I have period from hell. Really, really floored by it. DH is cooking. chicken thigh and leg stew (shudder) with actual vegetables!

S1ur · 25/09/2008 19:09

Well I just did sneaky spag bol.

Made a big batch of ratatoulie, aubergines/courgettes/red peppers/cherry toms and tinned toms/mushrooms/onions and herbs/garlic/puree.

Took some of it (will freeze/fridge rest for another time) and blitzed it smooth and added stock cube to beef it up a bit and chucked it in with the cooked mince and watched smugly as the dc sat happily munching on untold veg.

Oh I do love watching them it spaghetti it is hilarious, they do thatsucky thing and it just so fabulous messy

Served with salad for me and dp and avocado and bread for dc.

So that makes a lot of veg for today and I did have that banana earlier.

I have just had A Talk with dp about our my increasing squishyness. We are going to Do Something. It will probably involve me going back to running and finally agreeing to buy a cheap folding exercise bike that dp has been needling me about for months. It was a good talk. He wants to tone up a bit too so we are going to write a list, or something equally decisive.

S1ur · 25/09/2008 19:11

Oh FMF ouch for you - what a bugger periods can be.

OsmosisBanana · 25/09/2008 19:32

I don't know why but LOL at 'that banana' Slur!

amusing sentence.

OsmosisBanana · 25/09/2008 19:33

I hate periods. I just take my pill constantly. Am sure will eventually make me insane but who will notice?

Admittedly they do last roughly 6-10 weeks each time so there's a lot to hate.

DH not a fan either

pinkspottywellies · 25/09/2008 19:50

Eating HUGE plate of mushrooms on toast in sour cream sauce. Bit disappointed with the sauce but Nigella said sour cream so I tried it.

I like the recipe sharing idea. Boco have you got a slow cooker? I've put a veg chilli recipe here the other week. I can find it again if no-one wrote it down last time [long-suffering]

Glad you're feeling better today OsBa.
