ds1 has hurt his back today

my elderly father fell on him this afternoon and ds has hurt his back.

dad is a big man-about 14 stone probably and ds1 is about 5 stone!

he cried and cried and said his back was hurting. he has had calpol and i have just given him ibuprofen before bed.

there are no marks and no swelling.

not sure what i should do really.

any ideas? anybody medical?

i reckon it's the t section.

down from his neck-he says the pain is slightly to the right of his spine

he seems ok. was walking ok and everything. but a bt weepy again before bed saying it hurt him.hasn't mentioned any tingling no.

To be honest with you, I wouldn't say that it's OK because I don't know. You need to take him to see someone who can check him over. The chances are that he's fine though but I wouldn't take the risk IYSWIM. I would get him checked out, it's quite a weight to have falling on him.

that's kind of what i was thinking tbh. i wondered about taking him tomorrow.

i think i'll take him to gp and see what they say.

Could you phone A&E? I'd phone them for peace of mind, especially if he's been crying alot. There's too much in the spine that could need attention. If you take him to the GP in the morning then tell them what's happened incase they want you to take him to A&E.

part of me (the mum bit)says leave him to sleep. the overprotective student nurse in me has a list of nasty things that could be going on in his back running through my head.

It is a heavy weight. I would phone and check if it were my child. He might have bruised a ligament but I really wouldn't like to guess. They may say not to worry if he's asleep. I would let them say this though, not me.

dd hurt her back falling in gym, she was fine afterwards - walking and everything, though tearful and complaining of the pain.

I ended up taking her for an xray days later as she was still grumbling and I was starting to feel like a bad mum

Nothing found on xray and doc said it was most likely muscular and to rest.

The pain was to the left of the spine below the shoulder blade. She's fine now.

OK. I do tend to think the worst. It's part of the job. It's the children who you see and you think there's not alot wrong with them then you find out they have meningitis or worse. Anything spinal should be checked though.

Ok. They are better at working through these things then us. I'm sure they will say he's fine but It's good to check. It must have really hurt. Poor thing. I bet you were shaken.

to be honest i was more worried about my dad. i thought ds had jumped out of the way-he was sitting on the floor and i think dad tripped on his legs. i was concerned with trying to get my dad up on the floor and then i heard ds crying in the other room. i thought he was upset that his grandad had fallen but no-he had banged his head and hurt his back.

Agree Avena, with three of them I have had so many visits to outpatients! I used to always assume the worst, now I'm so sick of going taking them for xrays I tend to wait and see, and then start to worry...will this be the time I miss something serious?

Can't win, can we?

Hope he's ok themild... hope it's just a bruise.

he was very shaken. he's 80 god love him and very unsteady on his pins.

he was incredibly remoreseful that he had inadvertently hurt ds too.
but he wasn't actually hurt-he went down very slowly as ds there!

it was a brief interlude in the day!
and if ds hadn't started crying again at bedtime i would probably not have worried tbh.

It's hard, you never know if they are milking it or not. ds is like this. Sometimes I never know if he's exgerating. He has flat feet so his legs get painful if he walks alot. He's always saying they are bad, even if he's been sitting down for an hour and walking for 5 minutes.
