For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Hi Peasoup - i did see your response to the ''who's going'' and responded but you'd obviously set off by then

Solfest board has been down for a while but you can still get in by googling solfest forum and then cached.

filthymindedvixen · 28/08/2008 08:51

(melon, plums, strawberries)

FrannyandZooey · 28/08/2008 08:55

I love the fact 2 MNers met without knowing

my friend was sitting in a yurt with about 10 other people at Shambala and someone leaned over and said "don't you go to Franny's children's group?" (I live nowhere near Shambala venue btw)

Yes, Toot, I should recruit shouldn't I

Peasoup - what a lovely vegetabley name you have. How much fruit and veg do you eat and can you talk a lot of crap?

I am not sure which day it was but it was probably Saturday as you sat next to us a bit later at the vegan/veggie cafe. In fact, I noticed you again a few times, you seemed really familiar. How funny that you were a mnetter too. I have long dark hair that was scruffily tied up and I think I wearing a blue cardigan with jeans and red shoes. That cafe was great. The quiche with three salads was the only green stuff I ate all weekend.

MamaG - glad the midwife wasn't too worried. Keep an eye on it though and ring back if you are worried. One of my best friends had her baby last week and he weighed 10lbs 12oz!! She was tiny as well. Haven't spoken to her about the birth yet though, hopefully it went well.

zippitippitoes · 28/08/2008 09:47

party with lots of tents and creative stuff sounds wonderful

i didnt go up the mountain bf is going next month on his birthday and i have been decreed not fit enough

i was invited to go but then discouraged due to unlikelihood of keeping up

which is true

but annoying

i have had lots of apricots yesterday as they were 10p for a pack in tesco instead of 1.99 or something and i just ate two packs one after the other

i am back on trying to eat better and exercise

today i am going to dig up the spare house to start laying out a garden

i did have a plan to go to snowdon on my own for the weekend but i think as dd1 is nagging over the garden i wont be able to do that

BBBee · 28/08/2008 09:48

morning fruity beauties

look - womble came and we missed her. poor show.

zippi - am going to seem like an idiot here but when you say 'oats and fruit' are you:

a) cooking the oats (pooridge)
b) having some kind of milk / yoghurt with it
c) eating it dry

am taking this very seriously!

hope you have nice days ahead.

zippitippitoes · 28/08/2008 09:53

oh well i use organic oats from tesco which are quite chunky and organic semi skimmed milk

with usually half a box of frozen thawed fruit usually summer fruits or raspberries or recently blackberries also from tesco

i am afraid i shop in tesco

but clearly if you have a supply of fresh fruit you grow that would be much better

if i dont have berries which i just happen to like then pears maybe

berries are the least caslorific i think

and oats are low gi

i do have a very generous portion

i also have one wine glass of mango and orange juice in the day

no more juice than that tho in one day

oh and no coffee and only herbal teas

and water

zippitippitoes · 28/08/2008 09:54

so oats in bowl add fruit and pour milk over all cold raw

BBBee · 28/08/2008 09:58

got it.

no coffee

do youi drink any caffine?

that breakfast sounds nice - esp if defrosting frozen berries as makes it easier. ANd it fills you up yes? for the whole day.

I am feeling very potato shaped. In a sad 10/10 way.

BBBee · 28/08/2008 09:59

was it easy to stick to and did you ever lapse and did you just start one day and not look back or did you think and plan for a while?

how much weight how quick

Boco · 28/08/2008 10:05

I need to stop eating biscuits. I made a tray of tiffin and ate it in a few hours. Tiffin must be the baddest, all that butter and syrup and chocolate. Trousers are tight, I feel like I may have a rogue chin developing.

UR can't imagine how totally different your hood must be from mine!

zippitippitoes · 28/08/2008 10:07

well once i started no i didnt really lapse but it did feel like a last chance

i gradually built up the exercise aspect

it was really hard especially the first couple of months but once i was making progress not so bad

it did seem a long time

i am determined to get back on it ast the moment as i think i have started under bf influence eating too mnay wrong things

but although i felt fat i actually weighed myself yesterday and i am under 10 stone still so i think it is the fitness that has deteriorated

how much weight arte you tryoing to lose

and to begin with i did hasve some diet coke but not really a good idea

i was drinking far too much wine beforehand too so giving that up made a big difference

i have had some recently tho nothing like the same amount so cutting that out again

Guadalupe · 28/08/2008 10:12

Oh look, we are all fat. This is not a good advert for veggers. I came down and lined up the fruit but like a zombie put three pieces of toast in and buttered them with marmite before arranging the fruit in an geometric pattern.

BBBee · 28/08/2008 10:15

oh what has become of us?

zippi two stone

(boco - you can't go from gun wielding to making tiffin - is die hard interspered with brief encounter. PICK YOUR GENRE)

Guadalupe · 28/08/2008 10:18

ha ha at gun-wielding, one hand in the tiffin tray cop

Hi Bero,

Glad that DS2 was ok with DH and lunchtime BF, so maybe not as bad as you'd feared?

Are you happy about the week to week flexibility? How are you feeling about it all?

Tatties · 28/08/2008 13:11

Hello all

Bero that is good about not necessarily having to do the 3.5 days. And good about ds2! Do you feel relieved? Has it not been quite so bad as you thought?

Tatties · 28/08/2008 13:12

x-posts Wombling! Good to see your dd's party sounded fantastic

filthymindedvixen · 28/08/2008 13:14

Hello lovely Bero and lovely Wombling.

Veg soup, (more) plums, more melon. God I'm going to be antisocial tonight...

I haven't put on any weight, in fact I lost some over the weekend - though ^how with al the pie and cider consumed, I do not know.

I want to have met peasoup too.

womblingalong · 28/08/2008 13:17

Hello Tatts and FMF,

I am most jealous that you lost weight FMF, I really really need to.

How are you Tatties?

zippitippitoes · 28/08/2008 13:22

two stone i would say maybe would take 4 to 5 months to get rid of

the longer the better really as it is more likely to be a genuine lifesty;le change and your body adjusts better and it will last

zippitippitoes · 28/08/2008 13:23

so starting now you could expect to have substantially got rid of it by xmas

berolina · 28/08/2008 13:30

Tatties, the ds2 side has been a lot better than I feared. bad moment yesterday morning waiting for the train in when I saw a woman on the platform, about my height and build, carrying a baby (prob a bit younger than ds2) in exactly the carrier I have - that was a thump-in-the-stomach moment tbh - but otherwise I am OK. The rest is a bit mixed - dept manager (not my line manager) felt it necessary to 'welcome' me back by reminding me that the project mustn't suffer from my mothering activities which, especially considering I have always found him a very considerate boss before, I found a bit off. To his credit, he did stutter and stammer over it, but in that case why feel the need at all, fgs? We go way back to when I first worked there briefly, so I think I am going to have a chat to him about it. It also struck me more clearly than before how very much In The Wrong Job I am in. I think, all other things being equal, it will be a matter of months rather than years before I go freelance. Then at least I will be able to do more writy-translaty-proofready things again, and possibly teach a university course or something.

don't worry wombling, I need at least one hand to count the people I owe emails to The flexibility is fine by me, particularly because I think dept manager's anxiety about the project is a little misplaced.
