How do I stop going for a wee in the middle of the night every night?

Just that really. I stop drinking fluids latest 7pm, sometimes have a tiny sip around 10 to swallow a tablet. But I’m waking up in the night pretty much every night needing a wee - and it’s not just the sensation of needing a wee, it’s a proper full bladder wee! I’m then awake and don’t get back to sleep for a while. It’s tiring me out.

Grateful for any suggestions. I’m 45 btw. Thanks x

How much tea and coffee are you drinking or pop? They are diuretics

This can be a symptom of medical conditions like hyperparathyroidism.

Is this a new issue?
How old are you?

fumingrightnow1 · 07/10/2026 20:41

I just assumed this what part off getting older

BobbleBear · 07/10/2026 20:41

I think it’s normal as you get older to need to wee in the night. I can easily get up 2-3 times every night.

However, I use a torch on a dim setting and don’t put the room lights on or flush the loo and I can easily go straight back to sleep afterwards.

SauvignonBlanche · 07/10/2026 20:42

I’m up twice a night, sometimes three 😩

HewasH2O · 07/10/2026 20:43

Have you had a blood test for diabetes?

Gettingonabitnow · 07/10/2026 20:43

Oh no really, maybe it’s the norm then! 😂 I’m 45. drink 2 - 3 instant coffees per day.

Have you had a blood test for diabetes?

Yes all fine, as is thyroid. Also had CA125.

Have you had your bloods checked recently. Many women experience this as a result of hormone changes around this age.

Also worth getting sugars checked if you are feeling thirsty and drinking a lot during the day as may be a sign pre diabetic.

Yes I remember this starting around 45 for me as well and I mentioned it to my GP and she just said it was normal.
I'm now 60. I wake up every night around 2:00 to go to the loo.

Vaginal oestrogen sorted mine

UltimateSloth · 07/10/2026 20:45

I wouldn't say it's inevitable with age. I'm 55 and I only get up in the night if I've drunk a cup of tea after about 8pm.

AnnaMagnani · 07/10/2026 20:46

45 - is this start of vaginal atrophy? Vaginal oestrogen sorted this for me.

ClaudeHopper · 07/10/2026 20:47

I’m 53 and I never, ever have to get up in the night. It’s not the norm for me - and I’d hate it. My husband is 56 and he never gets up either.

MotherofPufflings · 07/10/2026 20:49

Is it a new thing for you to need a wee every night or is it the getting back to sleep that's the issue? Or both?

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 07/10/2026 20:50

I don't think it's inevitable either. I never get up in the night, I'm late 40s.

My husband used to go to the loo at least twice a night. It stopped instantly when he got a CPAP machine - he'd been waking himself up snoring and his brain seemed to think he must need a wee. Have you started snoring recently, do you know?

BobbleBear · 07/10/2026 20:51

I make sure I drink 2-3 litres of water a day. Plus I drink a large glass of water just before bed. I’m more interested in keeping hydrated than worrying about getting up for the toilet.

It’s the opposite for me, I’ve gone for a wee in the night almost every night of my life unless I’ve been in an exceptionally deep sleep. Was never a bed wetter as a child or anything like that just always needed a night wee.

OP, I just barely open my eyes and definitely no lights on and don’t flush until the morning. If I’m lucky I’ll be straight back to sleep.

Thebutterflyslovemybush · 07/10/2026 20:54

I rarely get up in the night for a wee and I'm 44, but on occasion that I need to because I've drank too late I find that my body seems to get into a habit of it, and before I know it I'm up a few nights in a row. And if I drink too much coffee I can go for a wee every hour, so I tend to only drink one.

Maybe cut down on your coffee, try only sipping on water as it gets late and see if you can train yourself not to need to go

Yes I was 3-4 times a night, plus all the joyful sweats etc. such fun! The HRT reduced the getting up (sweats had already passed as I didn’t go on it till 10 years post meno) and reducing eating window and reducing carbs to under 50g net a day really helped for me as I had chronic water retention (that said, I’ve just eaten cod and chips so I expect I’ll be up and down all night!)
different things help different people though. I see you’ve had your bloods done. What about hormones? Lack of oestrogen can cause bladder issues but normally that’s when you’re a bit older and things are drying/thinning out (it’s why older people get more wee infections) maybe topical oestrogen helps - you could ask your doctor.

BrummieKara · 07/10/2026 20:56

Another vote for exploring vaginal oestrogen. You are textbook age for vaginal atrophy.

over50andfab · 07/10/2026 20:56

Urinary frequency and getting up more in the night is a common symptom of GSM in menopause which for the majority of women starts between 45-55. Topical oestrogen in the form of a vagina pessaries or cream will help improve the urethral tissue.
At 45 blood tests aren’t advised, rather we and doctors go on symptoms

I had similar, a total head wreck!

I now take magnesium glycinate half an hour or so before getting into bed. It seems to keep me asleep a lot longer. I used to wake at around 3am, now it's around 6am. That to me is a huge improvement.

Occasionally I do wake in the middle of the night but not anywhere near as often as before. I'm late 60s BTW, so vaginal atrophy is probably a feature by now. I tried vag estrogen but it didn't agree with me. The itch from it drove me insane. But the magnesium is helping a lot.

At least it’s routine :-)
I’ve been wearing a BP monitor at night which somehow tracks my sleep as well. I wake up at 4 and 6 but I’ve worked out the 4am is bloody DHL cargo (747-noisy) and the 6am is a wee.

then the neighbours yappy dog starts at 7.30. Im so glad i no longer get up for work!
