How do I stop going for a wee in the middle of the night every night?

Just that really. I stop drinking fluids latest 7pm, sometimes have a tiny sip around 10 to swallow a tablet. But I’m waking up in the night pretty much every night needing a wee - and it’s not just the sensation of needing a wee, it’s a proper full bladder wee! I’m then awake and don’t get back to sleep for a while. It’s tiring me out.

Grateful for any suggestions. I’m 45 btw. Thanks x

What’s your diet like? When I am low carbing I wake up at least 4 times a night to go to the loo, if not more. Awful.

Pixiedust49 · 07/10/2026 22:09

Crikey I’ve been up for a wee every night without fail since my early teens. If I slept all night without needing to wee I’d think there was something wrong with me!

Pinkandgreentrousers · 07/10/2026 22:57

Don't drink coffee or tea after 3pm

Don’t ask this site. Schedule an appointment with your PCP (primary care physician) to discuss. You’ll likely be referred to a urologist.

IMHO, medical questions have no business being posted on social media sites.

In the UK they are definitely not going to be referred to a urologist because they are going for a wee in the night. It is a very normal thing to do.

I can't remember ever not needing a wee in the night.

GoinStrong · 08/10/2026 03:32

If that is fact, the health care system must be extremely deficient.

I had similar, a total head wreck!

I now take magnesium glycinate half an hour or so before getting into bed. It seems to keep me asleep a lot longer. I used to wake at around 3am, now it's around 6am. That to me is a huge improvement.

Occasionally I do wake in the middle of the night but not anywhere near as often as before. I'm late 60s BTW, so vaginal atrophy is probably a feature by now. I tried vag estrogen but it didn't agree with me. The itch from it drove me insane. But the magnesium is helping a lot.

I came on to recommend the same!

Most of my life I've got up at least once, usually twice in the night for a wee.

Since taking this I'm getting at least one complete sleep through per week. I'm hoping that will increase if I stay consistent.

It’s very rare for me not to have to get up at least once a night to wee. Has been the case since mid thirties I think.

PetiteParakeet · 08/10/2026 07:14

Interesting, I always assumed most people got up for a wee most nights, and it was only if you needed to go multiple times every night that it would be thought of as a medical issue.

Hatetagsinclothes · 08/10/2026 07:16

Are you losing weight? I find when I’m on a diet I get up more to wee.

PersephoneParlormaid · 08/10/2026 07:17

No caffeine after 12md and no fluids after 6pm.

KidsDoBetter · 08/10/2026 07:18

Vagifem!

magical how it works. That tiny bit of oestrogen firms up bladder.

TheBluebird · 08/10/2026 13:12

I've never slept through since I was first pregnant in 1995.
I don't know anyone over 45 who doesn't get up for a wee. I think the thing is to just view it as normal and just learn to not wake fully.
Avoid caffeine after lunch but never limit fluids, that's far worse for you than a nocturnal wee.

notanothernamesurely · 08/10/2026 13:30

I drink loads of water and 3-4 cups of tea a day. I pee before bed (10pm ish) and get up every single night for a wee. Have for many many years - have 3 kids, early forties

BansheeOfTheSouth · 08/10/2026 13:40

If this is a fairly recent change @Gettingonabitnow go to the GP and make sure you don't have a UTI. The only symptom I had was needing to pee between 2 and 3am each night, when previously hadn't been an issue. I drink at least 2 litres a day and don't even need to go when I wake up at 6 normally.

Make sure you fully empty your bladder before bedtime but as other PPs have said, once you train your bladder into this middle of the night habit you will struggle to stop it.

Ninetwenty · 08/10/2026 13:43

Medical advice is usually to drink more early in the day to make your bladder more efficient, which means it's properly empty when you go to bed.

thanks a lot Everyone. I’m going to try all suggestions! Going to start with no fluids after 6pm and also try the magnesium. Are there any side effects / negatives to taking it?

A friend said she got weird dreams on the magnesium but I can't say that's happened for me. I dream a fair bit anyway and they are always a bit odd tbf 😂 so no difference.

Have you had sugar in your blood checked for diabetes?
