Hi, for a while now I have had a constant pain in my left breast which sometimes goes to my arm pit. Im petrified of going to my Dr as I always think the worst although I know I have to go.I have one lo of 2 years a friend of mine said she once had pain & it was a blocked milk duct but I dont think that could be the case with me after 2 years.Has anyone else had this type of pain? There is a lovely nurse in my Drs surgery maybe I should book to see her.

I did, and it was hormonal - I had endless checks, lumpy tissue ('benign breast disease') but nothing bad. Do get checked, its horrid worrying about breast pain - you need the peace of mind, and in the unlikely event of BC much better to find out early - but honestly, the odds are very much on your side.

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/06/2008 08:58

Don't put off going to your GP. The chances are it isn't anything serious at all, but if it is, it's always better dealt with as early as possible.

sfxmum · 29/06/2008 09:15

I have this and have been to the doctor, also petrified, am having it checked out at the hospital, also been told it is probably nothing sinister but imo it is always best to make sure, fear and all

stepfordwife · 29/06/2008 12:07

i've had this, cherry.
it was an infected blocked milk duct.
am sure you'll be fine, but you must get it checked
take a deep breath and make that appointment tomorrow

stepfordwife · 29/06/2008 12:08

cherryapple · 29/06/2008 13:06

Thankyou all for your replies, it has helped & I will take a deep breath & book an appointment tomorrow stepfordwife.by the way how old was your lo when you had a blocked milk duct & what was the treatment? Wish me luck Im dreading it.

I've just seen my dr about the same pain and she examined me and said that I had pulled a chest muscle (don't know how I done that). Yours could be different as not acually seen where about your pain comes from but would go to the drs to get it checked.

cherryapple · 29/06/2008 17:54

I dont think its a pulled muscle because I have had it for a while. The pain is inside my breast on the left side & my arm pit feels tender. I have looked on the web site but there are so many things it could be.

Sounds v hormonal, but also v important to have a professional examine you! Is it achey, or stabbing, or something else?

naswm · 29/06/2008 18:45

I get occasional breast pain - right side for me - it comes on suddenly like a stabbing pain and radiates out through to my back. Once I get it, it can be 'around' for a fews days, then it can go again for another couple of months.

I have also had a blocked milk duct. The pain, for me, was very different.

But, do get yourself checked out. I am high risk for breast cancer as three females on my dm's side have had it so I get checked regularly.

stepfordwife · 29/06/2008 19:00

cherry
dd was 2.6 and i hadn't breastfed for about a year. but the consultant (and my GP recently) said it's very common to have blocked ducts and lots of breakdown of breast tissue after feeding one or several children, especially in women "of a certain age" (that's me, sadly )

there wasn't any treatment really. after a mammogram and scan, they did a biopsy on some gunk (sorry if TMI!) which came out the 'lump" on my nipple which confirmed it was an infection. he did say if it recurred may have to have a fairly minor op to remove a milk duct.

yes, make that apptment tomorrow - we'll be chking! they'll probably refer you to a breast clinic. if they don't, ask them to - always best to see the specialists.

I once went to the GP with breast pain and had a thorough check up. The very nice lady doctor I saw said the same as tmmj has just said, ie that pain is not really a symptom linked to breast cancer.

In my case, I decided it might have been linked to excessive computer use

southeastastra · 29/06/2008 20:58

it does come and go

theinsider · 29/06/2008 21:01

Gps used to be able to prescribe evening primrose oil for breast pain, unfortunately that was stopped a few years ago as there was no evidence it worked. However (if GP says it's just hormonal) it may be worth a try, lots of women with breast pain reckoned it did help them.

sfxmum · 29/06/2008 21:14

hi steppie, and thaks for gunk description

just to say again go and see the doctor, best be sure I will be at the breast clinic this Wednesday, quaking in my shoes but I really want to now one way or the other

cherryapple · 30/06/2008 06:34

All the very best of luck sfxmum I hope it all goes well.Let us know how you get on x.I didnt breast feed my lo Stepfordwife so I dont know if it could be a blocked milk duct. I went to the dr this morning & she examined my but she couldnt feel any lumps thank goodness. Yesterday myself & oh took our lo out I was in the passenger seat & lo' seat is behind me she kept throwing her cup on the back seat floor in a tantrum so I kept twisting my body around the front seat to pick it up. I realised yesterday that I have been straining myself like this for a while. I mentioned it to the Dr & she said I could have strained myself she didnt really want to send me to a breast specialist but she said to give it a month & see how the pain goes if it is a strain it should heal. But if it continues she will refer me.Sfxmum I will be thinking of you Wed good luck xlet us know how you get on x

stepfordwife · 01/07/2008 13:23

hi cherry.
glad apptment went well. sounds sensible advice from doc. but do go back if pain doesn't go away, won't you?
meanwhile, leave lo's cup on the floor and put in ear plugs

cherryapple · 01/07/2008 17:01

Im so relieved now,I will leave it 5 weeks as she recommended & hopefully the pain will have gone.I was so nervous when she was examining me I had it in my head she would find something. No more stretching in the car & yes ear plugs are a good idea.
